Distribution of Thrombophilia-Related Genetic Polymorphisms in Women with Reproductive Disorders.

Thrombophilia is considered one of the key mechanisms underlying reproductive disorders. Clinical heterogeneity of reproductive disorders and a lack of stratification by phenotype often limit interpretation. Therefore, evaluating thrombophilia-associated genetic markers separately in fetal loss syndrome, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy is essential. Background/Objectives: To assess the frequency of thrombophilia-related genetic polymorphisms in women with various reproductive disorders and evaluate their association with clinical-anamnestic characteristics

Genetics of polymorphism in nitrogen-induced-susceptibility of rice to Magnaporthe oryzae.

Nitrogen fertilization is essential for crop yield but can increase susceptibility to rice blast, a phenomenon known as Nitrogen-Induced Susceptibility (NIS). The genetic architecture governing natural variation in NIS remains poorly characterized. To address this, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using a diverse panel of 268 rice accessions from the rice diversity panel 2, under controlled nitrogen regimes 0N (control), 1N (100 mg/L NH4NO3), 2N (200 mg/L NH4NO3). Our analyses defined a NIS Index (NISI), which revealed extensive phenotypic polymorphism in nitrogen responsive

Exploring the Contribution of Interleukin-17 Genetic Polymorphisms to Pterygium Risk.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Pterygium is a chronic, fibrovascular ocular surface disorder with tumor-like biological behavior. Although inflammatory mediators such as interleukin-17 (IL17) are increasingly implicated in its pathogenesis, the genetic contribution of IL17 remain unclear. To our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate whether IL17A rs2275913 and IL17F rs763780 polymorphisms influence pterygium susceptibility in a Taiwanese population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This case-control study evaluated the association between promoter IL17A rs2275913 and exonic IL17F rs763780 polymorphisms wi

Genetic associations of Neat1 polymorphisms with clinicopathologic characteristics of tongue cancer.

One of the most common malignant tumors of the head and neck region is tongue cancer. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) called nuclear enriched abundant transcript 1 (Neat1) are linked to tumor growth, survival, and apoptosis in a variety of cancer types; however, it is unclear how these factors relate to tongue cancer. Furthermore, it is unknown how Neat1 polymorphisms and clinicopathological traits in individuals with tongue cancer relate to one another. We looked examined the effects of three variants in the Neat1 gene and clinicopathological characteristics on the risk of tongue cancer in 400

Exploring WNT2 polymorphisms in comitant strabismus: A genetic association study.

BACKGROUND: Strabismus is a complex oculomotor condition characterized by a misalignment of the visual axis. The genetics of strabismus are poorly defined although a few candidate genes have been identified, among which is the WNT2 gene. Our study was designed to assess the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of WNT2 in Pakistani strabismus patients. METHODS: A total of six SNPs, three intronic and three in the 3́ untranslated region, were screened in the current study. Logistic regression was performed using a dominant, recessive and additive model to determine the associat

Genetic Polymorphisms of Prokineticins and Prokineticin Receptors Associated with Human Disease.

Prokineticins (PKs) are low molecular weight proteins that exert their effects by binding to two seven-transmembrane G-protein-coupled receptors (prokineticin receptors, PKRs). The prokineticin system is an important player in the development of various diseases. Several polymorphisms that are associated with infertility, neuroendocrine disorders, Hirschsprung's syndrome (HSCR), idiopathic central precocious puberty (CPP) and congenital disorders such as Kallmann syndrome (KS) have been described for both the PKs and PKR genes. The aim of this study is to summarize and describe the impact of P

Genetic Association of Interleukin 33/ST2 Polymorphisms With Behcet's Uveitis.

Interleukin (IL)33, a member of the IL1 superfamily, functions as a nuclear factor and mediates biological effects by interacting with the ST2 receptor. Recent studies have described IL33 as an emerging pro-inflammatory cytokine in the immune system, and IL33/ST2 gene polymorphisms have been implicated in the pathogenesis of various immune diseases. However, the underlying mechanisms of IL33/ST2 in Behcet's disease (BD) remain to be defined. Here, we investigated the association between IL33/ST2 gene polymorphisms and BD in 585 BD uveitis (BDU) patients and 834 healthy controls using Agena Mas

Association of arsenic-induced cardiovascular disease susceptibility with genetic polymorphisms.

Inorganic arsenic (iAs) exposure has been reported to have an impact on cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, there is not much known about the cardiac tissue injury of CVD patients in relation to iAs exposure and potential role of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of genes related to iAs metabolism, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction and inflammation which may play important roles in such CVD cases. In this dual center cross-sectional study, based on the exclusion and inclusion criteria, we have recruited 50 patients out of 270, who came from known arsenic-affected and- unaffect

Inherited Genetic Mutations and Polymorphisms in Malignant Mesothelioma: A Comprehensive Review.

Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is mainly caused by air-born asbestos but genetic susceptibility is also suspected to be a risk factor. Recent studies suggest an increasing number of candidate genes that may predispose to MM besides the well-characterized BRCA1-associated protein-1 gene. The aim of this review is to summarize the most important studies on germline mutations for MM. A total of 860 publications were retrieved from Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science, of which 81 met the inclusion criteria and were consider for this review. More than 50% of the genes that are reported to predispose to

Genetic polymorphisms as non-modifiable susceptibility factors to laryngeal cancer.

Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is a highly disabling disease to the patient, affecting speech, swallowing and respiratory skills. Smoking and alcohol abuse are principal risk factors linked to this disease. Genetic factors can be involved in carcinogenesis by controlling the cell cycle, cell survival, angiogenesis, and invasiveness. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) involving specific genes could modulate the risk of LSCC related to known carcinogens by modifying cellular responses, but not all genetic associations are known. In a case-control study, we assess the associations b

Association of genetic polymorphisms on methotrexate toxicity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Cushings syndrome (CS) is a relatively rare disease characterized by autonomous hypersecretion of cortisol. The incidence of CS is estimated to be equal to 2-3 cases per million inhabitants per year. The incidence of acromegaly is 3-4 patients per 1 000 000 per year. The disease is caused by hypersecretion of growth hormone which is mainly caused by benign tumour of the pituitary gland. In our case report we present a 41- year old woman suffering from both Cushings syndrome and acromegaly. The patient was examined in National Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetology Ľubochňa for a

Genetic analysis of interleukin 18 gene polymorphisms in alopecia areata.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA), which appears as nonscarring hair shedding on any hair-bearing area, is a common organ-specific autoimmune condition. Cytokines have important roles in the development of AA. Interleukin (IL) 18 is a significant proinflammatory cytokine that was found higher in the patients with AA. We aimed to investigate whether the IL-18 (rs187238 and rs1946518) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) may be associated with AA and/or clinical outcome of patients with AA in Turkish population. METHODS: Genotyping of rs187238 and rs1946518 SNPs were detected using sequence-sp

Genetic Polymorphisms in Cytokine Genes in Colombian Patients with Ocular Toxoplasmosis.

Toxoplasmosis is caused by infection with the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which has the capacity to infect all warm-blooded animals worldwide. Toxoplasmosis is a major cause of visual defects in the Colombian population; however, the association between genetic polymorphisms in cytokine genes and susceptibility to ocular toxoplasmosis has not been studied in this population. This work evaluates the associations between polymorphisms in genes coding for the cytokines tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) (rs1799964, rs1800629, rs1799724, rs1800630, and rs361525), interleukin 1β (IL-1β)

Genetic polymorphisms and periodontal disease in populations of African descent: A review.

Aggressive periodontitis is a rare but rapidly progressing form of periodontal disease that usually affects otherwise systemically healthy individuals, at a young age. It usually affects first molars and incisors, which are usually lost if treatment is not properly and early rendered. Although of low prevalence, it affects individuals of African descent at a higher prevalence, and usually multiple members within the same family. Several studies have been performed in the attempt to evaluate specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that could be associated with this disease. To the best
