Sleep is altered during menstruation but not inflammatory parameters: Results from polysomnography of EPISONO database.

Menstruation is an inflammatory process that involves changes in women's physiology leading to mental and physical complaints. Sleep is essential for optimal hormonal release, immune response, and wellbeing, becoming an important factor to be evaluated. We compared sleep, inflammatory mediators, fatigue, anxiety and depression symptoms, and quality of life in menstruating and non-menstruating women. We used the polysomnographic data of 232 women from EPISONO 2007, an epidemiological study from São Paulo city, Brazil. Women were distributed into menstruating (N = 61) and non-menstruating groups

The relationship between obstructive sleep apnea and visual hallucinations in PD patients: a polysomnography study.

PURPOSE: Parkinson's disease (PD) patients frequently experience visual hallucinations (VHs) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence and clinical correlates of VHs and OSA in the Chinese population with PD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sample of 489 PD patients was recruited for the present study. Patients were categorized as having formed VHs (FVHs) or minor VHs (MVHs) or as non-hallucinators (NVHs) according to the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and an initial questionnaire. Polysomnography (PSG) was used for objective assessment…

Association of insomnia phenotypes based on polysomnography-measured sleep duration with suicidal ideation and attempts.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of insomnia phenotypes, being insomnia with short sleep duration (ISSD) and insomnia with normal sleep … sleep, or having chronic insomnia (n = 719). Short sleep duration was defined as <6 hours of in-lab polysomnography-measured sleep duration (n = 879). Suicidality (SAI; n = 102) was ascertained by a lifetime history of suicidal ideation (SI; n = 84), suicide attempts (SA; n = 48) or death by suicide (DBS; n = 10). RESULTS: Compared to normal sleepers who slept ≥ …

Analyses of the Complexity of Patients Undergoing Attended Polysomnography in the Era of Home Sleep Apnea Tests.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Health care complexity includes dimensions of patient comorbidity and the level of services needed to meet patient demands. Home sleep apnea tests (HSAT) are increasingly used to test medically uncomplicated patients suspected of having moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Patients with significant comorbidities or other sleep disorders are not candidates for HSAT and require attended in-center polysomnography. We hypothesized that this trend would result in increasingly complex patients being studied in sleep centers. METHODS: Our study had two parts. To ascert…

A review of sleepwalking (somnambulism): the enigma of neurophysiology and polysomnography with differential diagnosis of complex partial seizures.

The goal of this report is to review all aspects of sleepwalking (SW), also known as somnambulism. Various factors seem to initiate SW, especially drugs, stress, and sleep deprivation. As an etiology, heredity is important, but other conditions include thyrotoxicosis, stress, and herpes simplex encephalitis. Psychological characteristics of sleepwalkers often include aggression, anxiety, panic disorder, and hysteria. Polysomnographic characteristics emphasize abnormal deep sleep associated with arousal and slow wave sleep fragmentation. In the differential diagnosis, the EEG is important to pr

Assessment of obstructive apnea by using polysomnography and surgical treatment in patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.

PURPOSE: Obstructive apnea is sometimes seen in patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome. The cause of apnea is not limited to macroglossia, and the surgical indication for obstructive apnea has not yet been established. The authors performed polysomnography for the assessment of apnea. METHOD: Overnight polysomnograms were obtained in 2 patients who developed obstructive apnea after 1-stage repair for omphalocele. CASE 1: Apnea index (AI), defined as apneic events per hour, indicated 17.3, and SpO2 below 95% occupied 80% of the total sleep time. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance im…

Nocturnal oximetry for the diagnosis of the sleep apnoea hypopnoea syndrome: a method to reduce the number of polysomnographies?

BACKGROUND: Polysomnography (PSG) is currently the "gold standard" for the diagnosis of the sleep apnoea hypopnoea syndrome (SAHS). Nocturnal oximetry (NO) has been used with contradictory results. A prospective study was performed to determine the accuracy of NO as a diagnostic tool and to evaluate the reduction in the number of PSGs if the diagnosis of SAHS had been established by this method. METHODS: Two hundred and seventy five patients with a clinical suspicion of SAHS were admitted to undergo, in the same night, full PSG and NO. Desaturation was defined as a fall in the haemoglobin sat…

Comparison of Home Sleep Polygraphy or Laboratory Polysomnography for the Diagnosis of OSA Before Bariatric Surgery.

BACKGROUND: In-laboratory polysomnography (PSG) is considered the gold standard for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Our study aimed to compare whether home polygraphy (PG) could provide comparable diagnostic accuracy to PSG before bariatric surgery in a real-life cohort and to determine whether home PG is associated with a higher incidence of complications. METHODS: In a retrospective study, we compared 400 patients who performed home PG or laboratory PSG between January 2017 and March 2020. All patients included had to be incident cases and had to have undergone bariatric surgery a…

Experiences of Children With Down Syndrome and Caregivers Using Contactless Sleep Monitoring as Polysomnography Alternative.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is more prevalent in children with Down syndrome (DS), and polysomnography (PSG) is routinely performed by 4 years of age. However, application of sensors to the scalp and midface is often poorly tolerated in this population because of behavioral and sensory sensitivities, resulting in failed studies and incomplete data. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore caregiver experiences and perspectives of contactless sleep monitoring using Sonomat as an alternative to PSG. METHODS: This was a cohort study of children with DS undergoing PSG for evaluati…
