Arthroscopic Treatment of Popliteal Cyst Through the Posterior Portal: A Comprehensive Clinical Study.

BACKGROUND A popliteal cyst, often perceived as benign, poses potential harm and symptoms. This study focused on arthroscopic treatment through the posterior knee portal at our medical center, aiming to assess its efficacy, safety, and long-term outcomes compared to traditional methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective analysis of 20 patients (9 males and 11 females) with symptomatic popliteal cysts (January 2020 to December 2022) undergoing arthroscopic treatment via the posterior knee portal was conducted. Data on demographics, clinical presentation, preoperative imaging, surgical techni…

Arthroscopic treatment of popliteal cyst and associated intra-articular knee disorders in adults.

We describe a surgical arthroscopic treatment for popliteal cyst in a series of 30 patients, with a mean follow-up of 32 months. The treatment consists of a cure for the intra-articular pathology of the knee associated with popliteal cysts, and the contemporaneous correction of the valvular mechanism responsible for the formation and reoccurrence of popliteal cyst. The popliteal cyst in adults was found to be almost invariably associated with other knee disorders. In all of the cases studied, a connection between joint space and cyst was found. Arthroscopy allowed the treatment of almost all o…

[Schwannoma of the common peroneal nerve. A differential diagnosis versus rare popliteal cyst].

The presented case concerns a patient with neuralgia of the common peroneal nerve and progressive neurological deficit caused by interfascicular growth of schwannoma. The ultrasound diagnostics identified the lesion as a popliteal cyst. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed features of atypical cyst location. Due to the clinical course, it was decided to decompress the nerve trunk. An interfascicular tumor was identified intraoperatively. Particular nerve bundles were separated microsurgically and the tumor of schwannoma morphology was removed. The postoperative course brought resolution of neur…

Clinical results of direct arthroscopic excision of popliteal cyst using a posteromedial portal.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of the direct arthroscopic excision of a popliteal cyst without additional skin incision using a posteromedial portal based on minimum 2 year follow-up clinical results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2003 to January 2010, 105 patients (111 cases) with popliteal cyst have been treated by a direct arthroscopic excision. Direct arthroscopic excision using a 70 degree arthroscopy and posteromedial portal can correct the valvular mechanism of capsular fold and reduce the complications with no additional skin incision at the popliteal area. In all cases, preo…

[Venous pseudothromosis of the lower leg after popliteal cyst rupture in rheumatoid arthritis].

During the course of only one year popliteal cyst ruptures simulating deep venous thrombosis were diagnosed in six patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The characteristic history and some specific physical findings are reported which are indicative of a pseudo-thrombophlebitis. Laboratory investigations were of limited value whereas a simplified contrast-arthrography demonstrated the synovial ruptures. In the rheumatoid patient a synovial cyst rupture rather than deep venous thrombosis should be primarily suspected and arthrography should be the first radiographic measure.

Pediatric Lyme Disease Presenting as a Ruptured Popliteal Cyst: A Report of 3 Cases.

CASES: This case report describes 3 pediatric patients presenting with acute calf or knee pain, calf swelling, and a ruptured popliteal cyst diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging. Lyme disease was serologically confirmed in each case. In all instances, treatment was delayed because of atypical presentation. All patients responded favorably after antibiotic therapy. CONCLUSION: The differential diagnosis of Lyme disease should be considered in the context of children presenting with atraumatic unilateral calf pain and a ruptured popliteal cyst. Otherwise, this unusual presentation could dela…

Compression neuropathy of common peroneal nerve caused by a popliteal cyst: A case report.

RATIONALE: Popliteal cyst developing in the sheath of a peripheral nerve or joint capsule may cause compression neuropathy. Although popliteal cyst is very common lesion, it seldom causes serious complications. Common peroneal nerve compression is rarely caused by an extraneural popliteal cyst. PATIENT CONCERNS: We presented the case of a 52-year-old female with common peroneal nerve compression caused by an extraneural popliteal cyst. DIAGNOSES: Electromyography showed the damage of common peroneal nerve. MRI magnetic resonance imaging showed the lump to be a popliteal cyst. She was diagnos…

Isolation and Characterization of Human Synovial Fluid-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells from Popliteal Cyst.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent progenitor cells in adult tissues. The aim of this study is to isolate and identify synovial fluid-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (SF-MSCs) from the popliteal cyst fluid of pediatric patients. SF-MSCs were collected from the popliteal cyst fluid of pediatric patients during cystectomy surgery. After cyst fluid extraction and adherent culturing, in vitro morphology, growth curve, and cell cycle were observed. The expression of stem cell surface markers was analyzed by flow cytometry, and expression of cell marker protein was detected by immunoflu…

Cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery: a recurrent case after cyst wall excision .

Although atherosclerosis remains the most common cause of lower limb ischemia, cystic adventitial disease (CAD) must be considered in the differential diagnosis of a patient without risk factors for atherosclerosis. The disease typically produces lower limb claudication and usually affects young and middle-aged men. The treatment consists of interposition grafting in cases with an occluded artery, but the treatment of stenotic lesions without arterial occlusion is controversial whether evacuation with cyst wall excision or interposition grafting. We report a case of CAD of the popliteal artery
