Social Representations of Urinary Incontinence in Caregivers and General Population: A Focus Group Study.

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a major public health problem. Although trivialized, it affects nearly 9% of the world's population and its prevalence increases with age. It affects many people living in nursing homes. In the literature, there is a lot of information on its symptoms, risk factors and therapeutic approaches, but its social representations are rarely studied. The objective of this qualitative focus-group study is to understand the social representations of urinary incontinence of caregivers of institutionalized elderly people, but also of the general population. Seven focus groups

Group A Streptococcal Brain Abscess in the Pediatric Population: Case Series and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is a rare cause of central nervous system infections. METHODS: We describe 3 new cases of GAS brain abscess in previously healthy children treated by us between 2015 and 2016 and review the 5 cases reported in the literature since 1988. RESULTS: All 8 children received early empiric antibiotic therapy and surgical intervention, and 5 made a full recovery. CONCLUSIONS: GAS brain abscess is a rare infection; however its incidence may be rising. We suggest that if patients show symptoms such as fever, vomiting and lethargy, with contiguous infection such

Evaluating Allostatic Load as a Framework for Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Across Sociodemographic Groups: Insights from a Safety-Net Population.

OBJECTIVE: Allostatic load (AL) is an emerging framework quantifying physiological dysregulation from cumulative exposure to stressors over an individual's life. We evaluated the relationship between AL and malignant breast biopsy results in women across sociodemographic subgroups. METHODS: Women 18 years and older who underwent at least one image-guided breast biopsy at a safety-net hospital between April 2016 and December 2023 were identified. Consistent with prior studies, AL was defined as a score based on eight values: resting pulse rate, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure

Challenges in Skin Cancer Screening and Access to Treatment Among Multiple U.S. Racial and Ethnic Population Groups: A Systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer remains the most common malignancy in the United States, yet disparities in screening, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes persist among racial, ethnic, and underserved populations. Minority groups are more likely to present with advanced-stage disease and experience worse survival outcomes compared with non-Hispanic White populations. This systematic review synthesized contemporary U.S.-based evidence examining barriers to skin cancer prevention, detection, and treatment among underserved populations. METHODS: Guided by the Arksey and O'Malley framework and reported in

The Prevalence and Association of Non-metric Dental Traits With Dentoskeletal Malocclusion and ABO Blood Groups in the Maharashtrian Population.

Introduction Non-metric dental traits (NMDTs) are a fundamental data source in forensic dentistry. Nevertheless, the insufficiency of data regarding the occurrence of these traits has instigated the present research endeavor aimed at ascertaining the prevalence, sexual dimorphism, and extent of inter-trait correlations within the Maharashtrian population of India. The secondary objective was to determine the correlations between NMDTs, dentoskeletal malocclusion, and ABO blood groups. Materials and methods This prospective, observational study included 528 individuals aged 18-30 years with den

Mental health trajectories among the general population and higher-risk groups following the COVID-19 pandemic in Switzerland, 2021-2023.

BACKGROUND: Mental health deteriorated in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, but improved relatively quickly as restrictions were eased, suggesting overall resilience. However, longer-term follow-up of mental health in the general population is scarce. METHODS: We examined mental health trajectories in 5624 adults (58 % women; aged 18-97 years) from the Specchio-COVID19 cohort, using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale-2 and the Patient Health Questionnaire-2, administered each month from February to June 2021, and in Spring 2022 and 2023. RESULTS: Depressive and anxiety symptoms

How Does an Online Mental Health Community on Twitter Empower Diverse Population Levels and Groups? A Qualitative Analysis of #BipolarClub.

BACKGROUND: Social media, including online health communities (OHCs), are widely used among both healthy people and those with health conditions. Platforms like Twitter (recently renamed X) have become powerful tools for online mental health communities (OMHCs), enabling users to exchange information, express feelings, and socialize. Recognized as empowering processes, these activities could empower mental health consumers, their families and friends, and society. However, it remains unclear how OMHCs empower diverse population levels and groups. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop an unde

A scoping review on the risk of tuberculosis in specific population groups: can we expand the World Health Organization recommendations?

Since 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended prioritising testing and treatment of tuberculosis (TB) infection (TBI) in 11 high-risk groups. With new options emerging for TB preventive treatment, we conducted a scoping review, in consultation with the WHO's Global Tuberculosis Programme, to explore the evidence for other population groups at potentially high risk of progression to active TB. We searched six databases for preprints and articles published between 2000 and August 2022. 18 out of 33 668 screened records were included (six meta-analyses and 12 original research s…

Between black and miscegenated population groups: sickle cell anemia and sickle cell trait in Brazil in the 1930s and 1940s.

The article examines medical and scientific studies of sickle cell anemia published in Brazil in the 1930s and 1940s, when the vast majority of physicians and scientists believed that miscegenation played a significant role in the epidemiology of the disease in the country. Special focus is placed on hematologist Ernani Martins da Silva, of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, who conducted blood analyses around the interior of Brazil with the purpose of classifying miscegenated and pure population groups based on the presence of sickle cells and the racial distribution of blood groups. The article exp…

Implications of XRCC1, XPD and APE1 gene polymorphism in North Indian population: a comparative approach in different ethnic groups worldwide.

Identifying risk factors for human cancers should consider combinations of genetic variations and environmental exposures. Several polymorphisms in DNA repair genes have impact on repair and cancer susceptibility. We focused on X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1 (XRCC1), Xeroderma pigmentosum D (XPD) and apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease (APE1) as these are most extensively studied in cancer. Present study was conducted to determine distribution of XRCC1 C26304T, G27466A, G23591A, APE1 T2197G and XPD A35931C gene polymorphisms in North Indian population and compare with different popula

[Transphobia in Brazil in the context of the pandemic: perceptions and actions of political groups that defend the trans population].

The COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil was marked by a set of measures to contain the virus, which had specific repercussions in different social groups, especially the most vulnerable, such as transvestites and transgender individuals. The aim of the present article was to investigate the particularities of transphobia in Brazil in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the actions of organizations and political groups in this scenario. The novelty and relevance of this study is evident by the scarcity of investigations focused on understanding the transphobic phenomenon in the context of a

Varying circumstances surrounding opioid toxicity deaths across ethno-racial groups in Ontario, Canada: a population-based descriptive cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The North American toxic drug crisis has been framed as an epidemic primarily affecting white people. However, evidence suggests that deaths are rising among racialised people. Accordingly, we sought to describe and compare characteristics and circumstances of opioid toxicity deaths across ethno-racial groups. METHODS: We conducted a population-based, descriptive cross-sectional study of all individuals who died of accidental opioid toxicity in Ontario, Canada between 1 July 2017 and 30 June 2021. Decedents were categorised as Asian, black, Latin American or white. We summarised
