Effects of liquid yeast cell wall on growth performance, intestinal development, immunity, and cecal Salmonella population of broilers.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of liquid yeast cell wall (YCW) supplementation in water on growth performance, intestinal development, immunity, and cecal microbiota in broilers. A total of 360 Cobb 500 male broilers were randomly allocated to three treatments with 6 replicates of 20 birds each. Experimental water treatments consisted of 1) a control (CON) group supplied with municipal water; 2) a liquid yeast cell wall (YCW1) supplemented group during d 0-14 and d 39-42 at 2.5 mL/L; 3) a liquid yeast cell wall (YCW2) supplemented group during d 0-14 and d 39-42 at 5 mL/L.

Female ticks (Ixodes scapularis) infected with Borrelia burgdorferi have increased overwintering survival, with implications for tick population growth.

The tick, Ixodes scapularis, vectors pathogens such as Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. Over the last few decad … xplanations for this result. The increased winter survival of adult female ticks could enhance tick population growth. Our results suggest that, in addition to climate change, B. burgdorferi infection itself may be promoting the northern range expansion of I. scapularis. Our study highlights how pathogens could work synergistically with climate change to promote ho …

Epidemic malaria dynamics in Ethiopia: the role of self-limiting, poverty, HIV, climate change and human population growth.

BACKGROUND: During the last two decades, researchers have suggested that the changes of malaria cases in African highlands were driven by cl … population through time. Briefly, density-dependent (endogenous process) occurs when the per capita population growth rate (R) is determined by the previous population size. An exogenous process occurs when some variable affects another but is not affected by the changes it causes. This study explores the dynamics of malaria cases (Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmod …

Maternal zinc deficiency during pregnancy elevates the risks of fetal growth restriction: a population-based birth cohort study.

We investigated the association between maternal zinc level during pregnancy and the risks of low birth weight (LBW) and small for gestational age (SGA) infants in a large population-based birth cohort study. In this study, 3187 pregnant women were recruited. For serum zinc level, 2940 pregnant women were sufficient (≥56 μg/dL) and 247 deficient (<56 μg/dL). Of interest, 7.3% newborns were with LBW among subjects with low zinc level (RR: 3.48; 95% CI: 2.03, 5.96; P < 0.001). Adjusted RR for LBW was 3.41 (95% CI: 1.97, 5.91; P < 0.001) among subjects with low zinc level. Moreover, 15.0% newborn

Temperature alters the relative abundance and population growth rates of species within the Dendroctonus frontalis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) community.

Temperature has strong effects on metabolic processes of individuals and demographics of populations, but effects on ecological communities are not well known. Many economically and ecologically important pest species have obligate associations with other organisms; therefore, effects of temperature on these species might be mediated by strong interactions. The southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann) harbors a rich community of phoretic mites and fungi that are linked by many strong direct and indirect interactions, providing multiple pathways for temperature to affect the sys

Age-dependent associations between growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) and depressive symptoms: Evidence from a population-based cohort.

Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) is a protein that is upregulated with aging, inflammation, and various somatic diseases. Emerging evidence suggests that GDF-15 may also be associated with depression and anxiety. The study examined cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between GDF-15 and symptoms of depression and anxiety in a population-based sample. Severity of depressive (n = 624; 55.8% male; 56.8 ± 15.8 years, 20.1-79.6 years) and anxiety (n = 261; 55.2% male; 56.4 ± 16.7 years, 20.5-78.6 years) symptoms were measured using the CES-D and GAD-7 at baseline and follow-up (me

Global, regional and national projections of heatwave-related death burdens under climate change, urbanisation, adaptation and population growth scenarios.

BACKGROUND: Intensifying heatwaves driven by climate change pose a severe and disproportionate health burden, particularly for populations undergoing rapid demographic and environmental transitions, yet globally comparable projections of future mortality under varying scenarios remain limited. METHODS: We constructed a global, grid-based, and three-stage framework covering 176 countries, integrating climate projections from 20 CMIP6 models under four Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5). Heatwaves were defined as ≥2 consecutive days with grid-specific dai

Recent and rapid population growth and range expansion of the Lyme disease tick vector, Ixodes scapularis, in North America.

Migration is a primary force of biological evolution that alters allele frequencies and introduces novel genetic variants into populations. … . The data and results indicate that newly detected tick populations are not the product of in situ population growth from a previously established population but from recent colonization resulting in a geographic range expansion. This expansion in the geographic range proceeded primarily through progressive and local migration events from southern populations to p …

Population Growth and Damage Caused by Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Hemiptera, Aphididae) on Different Cultivars and Phenological Stages of Wheat.

Among the aphids associated with wheat and other winter cereals, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) is currently the predominant species in the wheat growing region of southern Brazil. The damage caused by this aphid occurs by direct feeding and/or by the transmission of pathogenic viruses, such as the Barley/Cereal yellow dwarf virus. In order to estimate the direct damage caused by R. padi on wheat, we evaluated the population growth of this aphid during the tillering and elongation stages and its effects on grain yield components. The experiment was conducted in a screenhouse with three wheat cultivar…
