Population health and health sector cost impacts of the UK Soft Drinks Industry Levy: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: The United Kingdom Soft Drinks Industry Levy was introduced in April 2018, resulting both in changes in sugar levels in drinks and purchases of drinks. Both mechanisms could impact on the incidence and prevalence of raised body weight, diabetes and diet-related diseases, and therefore, have implications for economic costs to the health sector. OBJECTIVES: To model future impacts of the Soft Drinks Industry Levy on population health and health sector costs and to estimate net monetary benefit to the health system. DESIGN AND METHODS: Proportional multistate lifetable modelling stu

Wastewater-derived gut microbiome: global patterns and associations with population health.

Urban wastewater systems aggregate gut microbiome signals from large populations, enabling exploration of their associations with population-level health patterns. However, it remains unclear whether wastewater-derived gut microbiome (WGM) simply represents a composite of individual gut microbes or whether it forms structured ecological patterns with potential relevance to population-level health-burden gradients. We analyzed 661 untreated wastewater metagenomes from 220 cities across 97 countries spanning all inhabited continents to characterize the global WGM. WGM exhibited broad phylogeneti

Childhood Obesity as a Pediatric Vital Sign: A Population Health Initiative.

The high prevalence of obesity; the disparities in the risk of obesity based on race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status; and the serious short- and long-term effects of childhood obesity led to the selection of obesity as a Pediatric Vital Signs (PVS) indicator. This report describes the approach (multisector collaborations, guidance form the enhanced chronic model), interventions (multisector interventions to involve clinicians, community organizations, data systems, policy advocates, children and families), and measures (proportion of children with overweight and obesity seen in a health s

Vitamin D: Evidence-Based Health Benefits and Recommendations for Population Guidelines.

Vitamin D offers numerous under-recognized health benefits beyond its well-known role in musculoskeletal health. It is vital for extra-renal tissues, prenatal health, brain function, immunity, pregnancy, cancer prevention, and cardiovascular health. Existing guidelines issued by governmental and health organizations are bone-centric and largely overlook the abovementioned extra-skeletal benefits and optimal thresholds for vitamin D. In addition, they rely on randomized controlled trials (RCTs), which seldom show benefits due to high baseline 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations, modera

The mental health associations of vitiligo: UK population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is an acquired, autoimmune depigmenting skin disorder that may affect psychological well-being. AIMS: To determine the risk and impact of psychological comorbidity in people with new-onset vitiligo. METHOD: We conducted a retrospective observational study, using UK general practice data (2004-2020). Adults diagnosed with vitiligo (n = 7224) were matched 1:4 with controls (n = 28 880). Associations within 2 years of diagnosis were assessed for psychological conditions: recurrent depressive disorder (RDD), depressive episodes, non-phobia-related anxiety disorder, social ph

Assessment of Population-Level Disadvantage Indices to Inform Equitable Health Policy.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points The rapid uptake of disadvantage indices during the pandemic highlights investment in implementing tools that address health equity to inform policy. Existing indices differ in their design, including data elements, social determinants of health domains, and geographic unit of analysis. These differences can lead to stark discrepancies in place-based social risk scores depending on the index utilized. Disadvantage indices are useful tools for identifying geographic patterns of social risk; however, indiscriminate use of indices can have varied policy implications and

The essential role of population health during and beyond COVID-19.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has fundamentally changed how health care systems deliver services and revealed the tenuousness of care delivery based on face-to-face office visits and fee-for-service reimbursement models. Robust population health management, fostered by value-based contract participation, integrates analytics and agile clinical programs and is adaptable to optimize outcomes and reduce risk during population-level crises. In this article, we describe how mature population health programs in a learning health system have been rapidly leveraged to address the ch

Considerations for transgender population health research based on US national surveys.

Transgender identities and health are highly politicized in the United States leading to restrictions on relevant data collection in national health surveillance systems. This has serious implications on transgender population health research; an urgent area of study given the systemic discrimination faced by transgender individuals and the resultant social and health inequities. In this precarious political climate, obtaining high-quality data for research is challenging and in recent years, two data sources have formed the foundation of transgender health research in the United States, namel

Population Kidney Health. A New Paradigm for Chronic Kidney Disease Management.

Statistical data extracted from national databases demonstrate a continuous growth in the incidence and prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the ineffectiveness of current policies and strategies based on individual risk factors to reduce them, as well as their mortality and costs. Some innovative programs, telemedicine and government interest in the prevention of CKD did not facilitate timely access to care, continuing the increased demand for dialysis and transplants, high morbidity and long-term disability. In contrast, new forms of kidney disease of unknown etiology affected popu

Environmental Health Surveillance System for a Population Using Advanced Exposure Assessment.

Human exposure to air pollution is a major public health concern. Environmental policymakers have been implementing various strategies to reduce exposure, including the 10th-day-no-driving system. To assess exposure of an entire population of a community in a highly polluted area, pollutant concentrations in microenvironments and population time-activity patterns are required. To date, population exposure to air pollutants has been assessed using air monitoring data from fixed atmospheric monitoring stations, atmospheric dispersion modeling, or spatial interpolation techniques for pollutant co
