Osteoporotic fractures are emerging as a major public health problem in the aging population. Fractures result in increased morbidity, mortality and health expenditures. This article reviews current evidence for the management of common issues following osteoporotic fractures in older adults including: (1) thromboembolism prevention; (2) delirium prevention; (3) pain management; (4) rehabilitation; (5) assessing the cause of fracture; and (6) prevention of subsequent fractures. Areas for practice improvement and further research are highlighted.

Homelessness is poorly captured in most administrative data sets making it difficult to understand how, when, and where this population can be better served. This study sought to develop and validate a classification model of homelessness. Our sample included 5,050,639 individuals aged 11 years and older who were included in a linked dataset of administrative records from multiple state-maintained databases in Massachusetts for the period from 2011-2015. We used logistic regression to develop a classification model with 94 predictors and subsequently tested its performance. The model had high

BACKGROUND: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive and debilitating condition that affects individuals' quality of life. COPD self-management and supports provided by carers is key to the quality of life people living with COPD. Health literacy (HL) and Patient Activation (PA) are main drivers of self-management practices (SMPs). However, their contribution remains to be fully explored. This study aimed to examine the level of self-management practices, and the relationship with socio-demographic factors, HL and PA among multi-morbid COPD patients from rural Nepal.

BACKGROUND: An integrated chronic disease management (ICDM) model was introduced by the National Department of Health in South Africa to tackle the dual burden of HIV/AIDS and non-communicable diseases. One of the aims of the ICDM model is to reduce HIV-related stigma. This paper describes the viewpoints of service users and providers on HIV stigma in an ICDM model in rural South Africa.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A content analysis of HIV stigmatisation in seven primary health care (PHC) facilities and their catchment communities was conducted in 2013 in the rural Agincourt sub-district, South A

The intertwined themes that emerge from these passionately told narratives demonstrate how difficult it can be to navigate chronic pain. Many authors describe the labor of living in chronic pain, and several refer to their use of opioid medication as a tool to facilitate participation. The relationship between tolerance, dependence, and addiction is touched on in a handful of narratives, with some authors confronting-and seemingly internalizing-the stigma of addiction in seeking to regulate their opioid use. A related theme is the reduction of opioid medication; a few authors pronounce consens

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess an alternative statistical approach-multiple imputation-to risk factor redistribution in the national human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) surveillance system as a way to adjust for missing risk factor information.
METHODS: We used an approximate model incorporating random variation to impute values for missing risk factors for HIV and AIDS cases diagnosed from 2000 to 2004. The process was repeated M times to generate M datasets. We combined results from the datasets to compute an overall multiple impu

INTRODUCTION: People who inject drugs are 13 times more likely to die by suicide than the general population. Guidelines for responding to risk in this population are limited. Harm reduction services attended by people who inject drugs require targeted strategies to address the complexities of suicide risk among this population.
METHODS: Co-design, engaging health professionals and people with lived experience informed the study. Mixed methods were used to understand the experience of managing suicide risk among clients attending the Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) in Sydney. A s

OBJECTIVE: To assess the availability of essential health services in northern Liberia in 2008, five years after the end of the civil war.
METHODS: We carried out a population-based household survey in rural Nimba county and a health facility survey in clinics and hospitals nearest to study villages. We evaluated access to facilities that provide index essential services: artemisinin combination therapy for malaria, integrated management of childhood illness, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) counselling and testing, basic emergency obstetric care and treatment of mental illness.
FINDINGS:

This paper draws lessons from a review of primary health care services in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, undertaken by a regional health management team. The review was carried out because of perceived increases in workload and inadequate staffing levels, arising from the rapid expansion of the city associated with inward migration. A survey of the utilization of government clinics was used to develop a more equitable allocation of primary health care services between localities. The survey revealed disparities between patterns of utilization of the services and the allocation of staff: the

BACKGROUND: Expanding malaria community case management (mCCM) to all ages could shift the point-of-care to the community leading to improved healthcare access in underserved populations. This study assesses the economic viability of such an expansion in Farafangana district, Madagascar.
METHODS: A cluster-randomized trial was conducted across 30 health centres and the 502 community health workers (CHW) in their catchment areas, with the intervention arm implementing the age-expanded mCCM intervention. CHWs across both arms received training, supplies, and supervision to manage malaria. An ec

Most countries around the world have responded promptly to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) challenge by adopting considered and scientifically guided strategies for its containment. However, the situation is more complex for nations where malaria is endemic, as they now have the additional burden of COVID-19. In such nations, the healthcare systems are either in the preparatory or containment phase of the current pandemic. This enforced, sudden, and sharp public health refocus is likely to result in the disruption of annual malaria control activities such as distribution of insecticid

BACKGROUND: Severe and very rare obstetric complications (e.g. eclampsia, postpartum haemorrhage or uterine rupture), typically culminate in a chaotic, uncontrollable sequence of events. Outcome for mother and child depends on whether doctors and midwives are able to quickly take correct decisions and initiate optimal treatment.
OBJECTIVES: GerOSS (German Obstetric Surveillance System) aims at generating deeper insight into relevant risk factors to improve diagnosis and treatment of severe complications during pregnancy and delivery. As such it is primarily conceived as a system for quality i

OBJECTIVE: Common variation is a statistical process-control term for variability associated with usual operating conditions. Special variation occurs when usual operating conditions are disrupted. The objective was to explore the implications for preventive occupational medicine practice of common and special variation in air-level exposure.
METHODS: Illustrations are derived from US and UK beryllium facility databases.
RESULTS: Special variation may be missed in finite sampling sets, giving a very inaccurate indication of the highest air levels experienced on the job. Depending on the toxi

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with sickle cell disease (SCD) are a vulnerable population with high risk of morbidity that could be decreased with effective self-management. Previous research suggests that mobile applications (apps) may facilitate AYA engagement in health-promoting behaviors. The objectives of this study were: (i) describe Internet access and use in AYA with SCD; (ii) identify barriers for self-management in this population; (iii) collaborate with AYA to co-design a mobile app that would minimize barriers; and (iv) evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of

Obesity prevalence continues to rise in the US despite more than two decades of recommendations and guidelines for its prevention and management. The encouragement of individuals to adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle has remained the focus of clinical interventions and recommendations despite these efforts alone proving ineffective for long-term weight management. There are many recognized barriers to obesity prevention and management in community and clinical settings including political factors, social determinants of health, weight bias and stigma, and inequities in access to treatment and

CareLink-Corrections is an evidence-informed self-care management (SCM) program designed to provide nursing and health services students an opportunity to serve a vulnerable justice-involved population while learning to provide clinical care service. Within this program, SCM of health is the clinical focus and is conceptualized as a competency where the individual acquires the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that facilitate health maintenance, health care management, and/or health promotion. Thirty undergraduate nursing students and 47 incarcerated persons participated in this first phase of

This Special Issue of Preventive Medicine (PM) is the 2nd that we have organized on behavior change, health, and health disparities. This is a topic of fundamental importance to improving population health in the U.S. and other industrialized countries that are trying to more effectively manage chronic health conditions. There is broad scientific consensus that personal behavior patterns such as cigarette smoking, other substance abuse, and physical inactivity/obesity are among the most important modifiable causes of chronic disease and its adverse impacts on population health. As such behavio
