Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Activities of Copper(II)-1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-pione Against Commensal Bacteria and Fungi Responsible for Vaginal Microbiota Dysbiosis.

The disbalance of vaginal eubiotic microbiota can lead to overgrowth of Candida species and bacteria responsible for aerobic vaginitis, activating inflammatory pathways. The presence of Trichomonas vaginalis, a sexually transmitted protozoan pathogen, can be a predisposing factor for disordering the growth of bacterial/fungal pathogenic species due to the increase in pH and reduction of eubiotic microbiota. Herein, we evaluated the effects of the potent trichomonacidal compound, copper(II)-1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione (Cu-phendione), against pathogens responsible for candidiasis and aerobic v

Exploring individual- to population-level impacts of disease on coral reef sponges: using spatial analysis to assess the fate, dynamics, and transmission of Aplysina Red Band Syndrome (ARBS).

BACKGROUND: Marine diseases are of increasing concern for coral reef ecosystems, but often their causes, dynamics and impacts are unknown. The current study investigated the epidemiology of Aplysina Red Band Syndrome (ARBS), a disease affecting the Caribbean sponge Aplysina cauliformis, at both the individual and population levels. The fates of marked healthy and ARBS-infected sponges were examined over the course of a year. Population-level impacts and transmission mechanisms of ARBS were investigated by monitoring two populations of A. cauliformis over a three year period using digital photo

Evaluation of Marine Brown Algae and Sponges from Brazil as Anticoagulant and Antiplatelet Products.

The ischemic disorders, in which platelet aggregation and blood coagulation are involved, represent a major cause of disability and death worldwide. The antithrombotic therapy has unsatisfactory performance and may produce side effects. So, there is a need to seek molecules with antithrombotic properties. Marine organisms produce substances with different well defined ecological functions. Moreover, some of these molecules also exhibit pharmacological properties such as antiviral, anticancer, antiophidic and anticoagulant properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate, through in vitro test

Identification and quantification of polybrominated hexahydroxanthene derivatives and other halogenated natural products in commercial fish and other marine samples.

During routine analysis of commercial fish on halogenated pollutants, an unknown tribromo component (TriBHD) was initially detected as an abundant peak in sample extracts from the Mediterranean Sea. The molecular formula was established to be C16H19Br3O by gas chromatography with electron ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC/EI-HRMS). GC/EI-MS data were virtually identical with a polybrominated hexahydroxanthene derivative (PBHD) previously isolated from an Australian sponge species known to occur in the Mediterranean Sea as well. A tetrabromo isomer (TetraBHD) was also found in th

Amphipathic structure of theonellapeptolide-Id, a hydrophobic tridecapeptide lactone from the Okinawa marine sponge Theonella swinhoei.

Theonellapeptolide-Id (TNLP), a cyclic tridecapeptide lactone, was crystallized from dimethylformamide-water solution. In the asymmetric unit, two peptide molecules were combined with solvent molecules, and the total molecular weight was over 3000 Dalton. The crystal structure including solvent molecules was finally determined at 0.80 A resolution using synchrotron radiation. The conformations of two independent molecules were similar to each other and were also similar to the previously reported structure (Doi, Ishida, Kobayashi, Deschamps and Flippen-Anderson, 1999, Acta Crystallogr Sect C,

Alloimmune memory is absent in Hymeniacidon sinapium, a marine sponge.

The southern California sponge Hymeniacidon sinapium can recognize and reject transplanted allogeneic tissues. This species reveals a complex rejection response that involves cellular infiltration into the graft interface and a deposition at that site of a fibrous wall. The response then proceeds to a cytotoxic reaction in which the cells in the graft zone become necrotic and slough off, resulting in allogeneic tissue separation. The rate and intensity of this response varies with the genetic constitutions of the paired sponges and the temperature of the water. In experiments employing pre-sen

Marine envenomations.

As man takes increasing advantage of the waters of the world for recreational, commercial and scientific purposes, the hazards of human contact with inhabitants must be appreciated. Many invertebrate and vertebrate animal species have developed natural defense mechanisms, some of which involve envenomation, with a few species posing the threat of serious injury or death. This paper discusses the more common and more serious marine envenomations encountered worldwide, including toxicology of the associated venoms and a discussion of current treatment recommendations.

Identification and isolation of a retrotransposon from the freshwater sponge Lubomirskia baicalensis: implication in rapid evolution of endemic sponges.

Transposons are mobile genetic elements that are found in all major branches of life. Similarities to retroviruses concerning genome structure and transposition mechanism suggest a familial relationship. Transposons are important evolutionary drivers that trigger genetic changes such as genomic rearrangement, alteration of gene expression, and gene duplication. And, indeed, now more than ever the effect of transposons on genome evolution represents a dynamic field of research. Since sponges (phylum Porifera) are the phylogenetically oldest still extant metazoan taxon, the study of poriferan mo
