The radiological contamination of Wrocław Region after Czernobyl accident was evaluated as moderate. In the frame of Research Programme MZ-XVII 4310 persons (2012 men and 2298 women) were randomly selected and investigated. Subcutaneous phycomycosis is a rare fungal infection of the deeper layers of skin. We describe a representative case. A 10-year-old boy presented with a large swelling on the back of 3 months duration. Biopsy of the lesion confirmed the diagnosis of subcutaneous phycomycosis. There was complete resolution of the lesion after treatment with oral potassium iodide for 3 months.

Conidiobolomycosis caused by Conidiobolus species is an uncommon infection restricted to tropical and subtropical regions, usually affecting immunocompetent individuals. More than half of pediatric cases of conidiobolomycosis across the globe are from India. We report a case of subcutaneous conidiobolomycosis in an adolescent with development delay who responded to combined therapy with itraconazole and saturated solution of potassium iodide.

Rhinophycomycosis, a subcutaneous fungal infection, is less uncommon than many other frequently cited granulomatous lesions of the paranasal sinuses. Four illustrative cases are presented with their characteristic clinical, radiological and histopathological features. The initial origin of the swelling was always in the region of the nasal vestibule and ala. The therapeutic response to potassium iodide, ketaconazole and fluconazole was dramatic and sustained.

A case of midfacial swelling in a middle aged woman proved to be caused by a fungus Conidiobolus coronatus has been reported. It is a very rare condition and the knowledge of this fungus affecting the rhinofacial region in human started since 1965 only. These cases pose diagnostic problem. The treatment with the combination of ketoconazole and the saturated solution of potassium iodide was effective for this fungal infection.

A small familial epidemic of cutaneous sporotrichosis occurring in North Texas is reported. The disease occurred in four out of six children in two separate families of paternal cousins. The presumed source of infection was old prairie hay used for mulching. Trauma at the time of exposure seemed minimal or absent. Response to oral potassium iodide therapy was prompt and satisfactory.

A ten year old boy developed lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis following a wild rodent bite. The infection was successfully treated with potassium iodide. Sporotrichosis in humans has followed bites, pecks and stings inflicted by a variety of animals, birds and insects. Many species of animals are susceptible to infection by Sporothrix schenkii, but transmission from infected animals to man is uncommon.

Thyroid storm is a rare occurrence in the adult population and is even more unusual in children. The current report is of a 3.5-year-old girl who had thyroid storm with unique neurologic manifestations, namely seizure and coma. Acute medical management with propylthiouracil, saturated solution of potassium iodide, hydrocortisone, and propranolol brought about complete resolution of symptoms.

Previously, we observed that excess iodide rapidly suppressed the elevated ornithine decarboxylase activity in the thyroid of propylthiouracil (PTU)-pretreated rats. Excess iodide also induces involution of goitrous thyroids. These findings led us to study effects of excess iodide on apoptosis of rat thyroids. Six cases of sporotrichosis in Delhi (non-endemic area) were recorded in migrants from Uttarakhand over a period of one year (2008-2009). The clinico-epidemiological and mycological profile of the patients is discussed. These were confirmed by mycological culture, histopathological examination and/or remission of lesion with potassium iodide. A veterinarian cut his finger while performing an autopsy on a dog subsequently confirmed to have died of blastomycosis. A typical chancriform complex developed at the site of inoculation. Culture of the lesion grew Blastomyces dermatitidis. Healing of the lesion occurred after 7 months and a course of potassium iodide. This is the first reported case of a canine necropsy accident leading to primary inoculation blastomycosis.

The isolation of Sporothrix schenckii from a female European cat it is described. The cat showed lengthened alopecic areas, with prominent nodules in the external surface of the thighs and abdomen. A mycological and histopathological studies of the lesions were carried out. The lesions resolved under treatment with 20% potassium iodide in doses of 0'1 ml/kg oral route in a 8 weeks period.

Five patients had a form of pemphigus which in its early stages resembled dermatitis herpetiform, although the immunofluorescent findings were typical of pemphigus. Potassium iodide tests, performed for the first time in such patients, showed positive results in two patients. Follow-ups ranging from 5 to 14 years have shown a benign course with low to absent dosages of steroids.

The efficacy of 131I therapy in achieving euthyroidism has been studied in a group of 264 patients followed for up to 10 yr. One hundred and eighty-six were given a dose adjusted for thyroid size and radioactive iodine uptake (Protocol 1), and a second group received the same dosage followed by antithyroid drug therapy plus potassium iodide for 15 days (Protocol 2).
