Alzheimer's disease prediction algorithm based on hippocampal longitudinal hybrid morphological features.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline; this decline is closely linked to hippocampal morphological changes observed in structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, the existing AD prediction models have not fully explored the spatiotemporal correlation of hippocampal morphological features. To address this limitation, this study aims to develop a longitudinal prediction framework that captures both the temporal evolution and spatial distribution of hippocampal morphological alterations. METHODS: In this pap

Idiographic Lapse Prediction With State Space Modeling: Algorithm Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Many mental health conditions (eg, substance use or panic disorders) involve long-term patient assessment and treatment. Growing evidence suggests that the progression and presentation of these conditions may be highly individualized. Digital sensing and predictive modeling can augment scarce clinician resources to expand and personalize patient care. We discuss techniques to process patient data into risk predictions, for instance, the lapse risk for a patient with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Of particular interest are idiographic approaches that fit personalized models to each pa

Validation of a Machine Learning Algorithm, EVendo, for Predicting Esophageal Varices in Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Treatment with atezolizumab and bevacizumab has become standard of care for advanced unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) but carries an increased gastrointestinal bleeding risk. Therefore, patients are often required to undergo esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) to rule out esophageal varices (EV) prior to initiating therapy, which can delay care and lead to unnecessary procedural risks and health care costs. In 2019, the EVendo score was created and validated as a noninvasive tool to accurately screen out patients who were at low risk for having EV that required treatment. W

Development and assessment of algorithms for predicting brain amyloid positivity in a population without dementia.

BACKGROUND: The accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide in the brain is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD), occurring years before symptom onset. Current methods for quantifying in vivo amyloid load involve invasive or costly procedures, limiting accessibility. Early detection of amyloid positivity in non-demented individuals is crucial for aiding early AD diagnosis and for initiating anti-amyloid immunotherapies at early stages. This study aimed to develop and validate predictive models to identify brain amyloid positivity in non-demented patients, using routinely collected clinical data.

Applicability of machine learning algorithm to predict the therapeutic intervention success in Brazilian smokers.

Smoking cessation is an important public health policy worldwide. However, as far as we know, there is a lack of screening of variables related to the success of therapeutic intervention (STI) in Brazilian smokers by machine learning (ML) algorithms. To address this gap in the literature, we evaluated the ability of eight ML algorithms to correctly predict the STI in Brazilian smokers who were treated at a smoking cessation program in Brazil between 2006 and 2017. The dataset was composed of 12 variables and the efficacies of the algorithms were measured by accuracy, sensitivity, specificity,
