The aim of this study was to test the suitability of calcium phosphate cement mixed with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (CPC-PLGA) microparticles into a ring-shaped polymeric space-maintaining device as bone graft material for lateral bone augmentation. Therefore, the bone chambers were installed on the lateral portion of the anterior region of the mandibular body of mini-pigs. Chambers were filled with either CPC-PLGA or BioOss® particles for comparison and left for 4 and 12 weeks. Histology and histomorphometry were used to obtain temporal insight in material degradation and bone formation. R

Cricothyrotomy proficiency is imperative for anesthesia providers; however, opportunities to perform this skill are infrequent making skill maintenance essential. Increased accessibility of three-dimensional (3D) printing allows for production of low-cost simulation models. The models used for simulation-based teaching and deliberate practice facilitate skill development and refinement. A cost-effective, 3D printed airway model was designed and allowed 47 anesthesia providers to complete hands-on practice during a cricothyrotomy simulation-based training program. Assessment and comparison of p

The extensive water pollution caused by production activities is a key issue that needs to be addressed in the aquaculture industry. The dynamic monitoring of water quality is essential for understanding water quality and the growth of fish fry. Here, a low-cost, low-noise, real-time monitoring and automatic feedback biomimetic robotic fish was proposed for the dynamic monitoring of multiple water quality parameters in aquaculture. The biomimetic robotic fish achieved a faster swimming speed and more stable posture control at a swing angular velocity of 16 rad/s by using simulation analysis. A

BACKGROUND: Total wrist arthroplasty (TWA) is a motion-sparing treatment for pancarpal arthritis; however, complication rates up to 50% have limited widespread use. Implant micromotion, stress shielding, and periprosthetic osteolysis result in implant failure and revision to arthrodesis. Metal 3-dimensional (3D) printing allows for more accurate matching of surrounding bone biomechanical properties, theoretically reducing periprosthetic osteolysis. Herein, we use computed tomography to characterize the relationship of relative stiffness along the length of the distal radius with patient demogr

Although the three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has spread in the field of neurosurgery, the use of 3D print models concerning glioma surgery has rarely reported. For glioma surgery, some preoperative and intraoperative assistive methods have been developed to avoid injury to the cortex and fiber that are related to the neurological function. Furthermore, in order to perform preoperative simulation of glioma surgery, we created a 3D print model using a multi-material 3D printer that provided the flexibility of adjusting the color, hardness, and translucency of each structure arbitraril

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional printing is increasingly utilised for congenital heart defect procedural planning. CT or MR datasets are typically used for printing, but similar datasets can be obtained from three-dimensional rotational angiography. We sought to assess the feasibility and accuracy of printing three-dimensional models of CHD from rotational angiography datasets.
METHODS: Retrospective review of CHD catheterisations using rotational angiography was performed, and patient and procedural details were collected. Imaging data from rotational angiography were segmented, cleaned, and p

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional printing is a process enabling computer-assisted conversion of imaging data from patients into physical "printed" replicas. This has been extrapolated to reconstructing patient-specific cardiac models in congenital heart diseases. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of three-dimensional printing in surgical decision making in selected cases of complex congenital heart disease by creating patient-specific printed models.
METHODS: Patients with complex congenital heart diseases with unresolved management decisions after evaluation by echocardiography, c

Presurgical evaluation of the alveolar cleft defect is an essential and crucial step for procedural success. In this study, three-dimensionally printed models derived from computed tomography scans were used to measure the alveolar defect volume before bone grafting. The authors also explored the influence of cleft type, age, and gender on alveolar bone defect volume. Ninety-four patients with unilateral alveolar cleft were enrolled in this study. One-way analysis of variance and multivariate analysis were used to investigate the influence of age (8-14 years), gender, and cleft type on the out

White matter damage persists in hypoxic-ischemic newborns even when treated with hypothermia. We have previously shown that intraventricular delivery of human glial progenitors (GPs) at the neonatal stage is capable of replacing abnormal host glia and rescuing the lifespan of dysmyelinated mice. However, such transplantation in the human brain poses significant challenges as related to high-volume ventricles and long cell migration distances. These challenges can only be studied in large animal model systems. In this study, we developed a three dimensional (3D)-printed model of the ventricular

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic management of tracheal stenosis may be challenging, especially in the case of complex stenosis placed near the vocal folds, and needing stent placement. Herein, we evaluated the utility of the three-dimensional (3D) airway model for procedural planning in a consecutive series of patients with complex airway stenosis and scheduled for endoscopic treatment.
METHODS: This strategy was applied to 7 consecutive patients with tracheal stenosis unfit for surgery. The model was printed in a rubber-like material, and almost 7 hours were needed to create it. All patients presente
