[Health and justice coordination in prisons].

The question of health-justice coordination has been present since the law of 18th January 1994. Since then, professional relations between prison staff and health carers have been regularly questioned in terms of their aims. The texts structuring this interinstitutional health-justice coordination constitutes a framework which the various professionals must appropriate and implement by drawing on specific knowledge and skills. It is an invitation to work together around the same population, on their respective and different missions. The implementation of a structured therapeutic group with s

Prevention of Suicidal Behavior in Prisons.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, prisoners are at high risk of suicide. Research on near-lethal suicide attempts can provide important insights into risk and protective factors, and inform suicide prevention initiatives in prison. AIMS: To synthesize findings of research on near-lethal attempts in prisons, and consider their implications for suicide prevention policies and practice, in the context of other research in custody and other settings. METHOD: We searched two bibliographic indexes for studies in any language on near-lethal and severe self-harm in prisoners, supplemented by targeted searches …

Prison nursing and its training.

The main task of nurses is to take care of sick and healthy people and evaluate changes in their health conditions. The goal is to take the appropriate measures to help their recovery or guarantee a dignified death, and if possible, help them regain autonomy and independence. Nursing is present in different areas: primary health, mental health, accident and emergencies, intensive and coronary care, surgical care, paediatrics, geriatrics, public health, occupational health, teaching, etc. In our case, prison nursing, one of the least known branches of the profession, we wanted to investigate mo

Psychotherapy and despair in the prison setting.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to outline research which aimed to explore psychotherapists' experience of working with despair, in the UK prison setting, through a qualitative phenomenological approach. Within the forensic psychological literature, despair is considered a pathology, associated with suicide and self-harm, resulting from the prisoners histories and the coercive prison setting. In turn, therapeutic writings outline the importance of therapy in the prison setting with despair in providing coping skills, containment and learning opportunities for the prisoners involved. DES…

The prevalence of delusional disorder in prison.

Delusional disorder has important implications for forensic psychiatrists, as delusions are not infrequently related to criminal behavior. Thus, we hypothesized that delusional disorder is over-represented in correctional populations. We conducted a retrospective chart review of the electronic medical records from 2000 to 2012 of New Jersey Department of Corrections inmates who remained incarcerated as of March 2012. Potential cases of delusional disorder were initially identified by using a search for current or past diagnoses of such disorders or other diagnoses that could be misdiagnosed ca

Health promotion and prison settings.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to examine the contribution of modern correctional service in health promotion exemplified by the case study of Norwegian health promotion policies in prison settings. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This paper applies a two-fold methodology. First a narrative systematic literature review based on the Norwegian policy documents relevant for correctional settings is conducted. This is followed by a general review of the literature on the principles of humane service delivery in offender rehabilitation. FINDINGS: Alongside the contribution of the Risk-Need-Re

The objective is to study this efficacy in prison as well as motivations to reduce and influence of socioeconomic conditions and other addictions in prisoners' aspiration to stop smoking. METHODS: A prospective study was proposed to prisoners candidate to tobacco cessation. Assessment was made by questionnaires and visits to physicians working at the prison. [Prison psychosis and dissociative disorders].

Through a few clinical case histories stemming from their daily activities at the psychiatric section of the Lantin Prison, the authors propose to revisit the classic concept of Prison psychosis. They broaden its limits to include other psychotic and dissociative phenomena common to the jail population. This requires a strict differential diagnosis, allowing to eliminate some similar pathologies; nevertheless, some difficulties and imperfections persist. The development of the psychosis, the input from the jail architecture and milieu, the predisposing as well as facilitating factors linked to

Unrecognised transmission of tuberculosis in prisons.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a public health concern in correctional facilities. High turnover of inmate populations may preclude timely diagnosis of TB, so that unrecognised transmission may be common. OBJECTIVE: To determine the proportion of inmates with new skin test conversions who had identifiable exposure to diagnosed cases of TB in the correctional system, and to test the hypothesis that source cases of TB may be undiagnosed during incarceration. SETTING: Maryland Division of Corrections, USA. SUBJECTS: All inmates whose skin test converted from negative to positive at annual sc

Epidemic typhus in a prison in Burundi.

The International Committee of the Red Cross investigated an outbreak of fever of unknown origin in Ngozi prison, Burundi, which resulted in a crude mortality rate of 2.61% in January 1996. A definite diagnosis of epidemic typhus caused by Rickettsia prowazekii was established by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using specific antigens. Control measures included complete cleansing of the prison with cyfluthrine, shaving and dusting all prisoners with permethrin 0.5% dusting powder, and replacement of all mattresses and clothes. All prisoners and guards received a single dose of doxycyline (10…

Perinatal outcome for women in prison.

Pregnancy outcome for 233 women in prison was reviewed. This group of patients presented with multiple perinatal high-risk factors: history of illicit drug use (71%), smoking (70%), and obstetrical (27%), medical (21%), nutritional (20%), and infectious complications (20%). Maternal morbidity was uncommon and the overall cesarean section rate for all prisoners was 16%. There was 1 stillbirth and 236 live-born infants, all of whom were discharged in good health. Prematurity (3%) and delivery of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) (8%) infants was less common among 187 women who received adequate pr…

Hearing loss in prison inmates.

The incidence of hearing disorders in 34 State Penitentiary prison inmates all with a previous history of drug abuse were investigated. Subjects were evaluated using routine pure-tone air conduction audiometry, immittance measures, and short-latency auditory brain stem responses. Of the 34 inmates, 20 (58.8%) demonstrated normal bilateral peripheral hearing sensitivity, whereas 10 (29.4%) inmates presented with some degree of hearing impairment. In addition, the conflicting results of elevated pure-tone thresholds with normal immittance measures and normal ABR findings suggested that four (11.

[Catamneses of YY carriers in prison].

Among the 700 inmates of a big Austrian prison 5 cases of XYY caryotype were detected by means of the Quinacrinfluorescence method and subsequent lymphocyte culture. Keeping in mind that, if at all, only a small amount of criminal behavior may be explained by chromosomal factors three hypotheses about possible links between the XYY abnormality and criminal behavior are discussed in this paper. 1. the connection is a spurious one, as both criminal behavior and the XYY caryotype are more frequent in a working class population without being necessarily linked causally. 2. criminal behavior may be
