Comparison of sedation using pentobarbital or chlorpromazine in pediatric non-invasive imaging procedures: A before and after study.: Comparison of sedation using pentobarbital or chlorpromazine in non-invasive imaging procedures.

BACKGROUND: Sedation is often required for pediatric medical imaging procedures to ensure compliance and image quality. Recommendations for pediatric sedation exist, but there are currently no guidelines for the choice of the sedative drug. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy and adverse events of per os pentobarbital with intravenous chlorpromazine in children undergoing diagnostic imaging procedures. We hypothesized that the efficacy of per os pentobarbital would not be inferior to that of intravenous chlorpromazine, that safety would be similar, and that patient acceptance would be higher.

Safety and Adverse Event Profile of Procedural Sedation for Pediatric Burn Wound Care: A Single-Center Retrospective Cohort Study.

Procedural sedation is essential for pediatric burn care, yet standardized, evidence-based regimens are lacking. This study characterizes the safety profile and pharmacological predictors of adverse events (AEs) in intensivist-led pediatric burn sedations. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 626 procedural sedations across 208 pediatric burn patients at a single tertiary pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) from 2016 to 2025. Sedations were evaluated for medication exposure, burn severity, and clinical outcomes. A generalized estimating equation (GEE) logistic regression model, adjust…

Safety and efficacy of a nitrous oxide procedural sedation programme in a paediatric emergency department: a decade of outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Nitrous oxide (N2O) has multiple benefits in paediatric procedural sedation (PPS), but use is restricted by its limited analgesic properties. Analgesic potency could be increased by combining N2O and intranasal fentanyl (INF). We assessed safety and efficacy data from 10 years (2011-2021) of our N2O PPS programme. METHODS: Prospectively collected data from a sedation registry at a paediatric emergency department (PED) were reviewed. Total procedures performed with N2O alone or with INF, success rate, sedation depth and adverse events were determined. Contributing factors for these…

A Comparison of Intranasal Dexmedetomidine and Dexmedetomidine Plus Buccal Midazolam for Non-painful Procedural Sedation in Children with Autism.

Children with autism often need sedation for diagnostic procedures and they are often difficult to sedate. This prospective randomized double-blind control trial evaluates the efficacy and safety using intranasal dexmedetomidine with and without buccal midazolam for sedation in children with autism undergoing computerized tomography and/or auditory brainstem response test. The primary outcome is the proportion of children attaining satisfactory sedation. One hundred and thirty-six children received intranasal dexmedetomidine and 139 received intranasal dexmedetomidine with buccal midazolam for

Clinical practice guidelines for nurse-administered procedural sedation and analgesia in the cardiac catheterization laboratory: a modified Delphi study.

AIM: To develop clinical practice guidelines for nurse-administered procedural sedation and analgesia in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have reported that nurse-administered procedural sedation and analgesia is safe. However, the broad scope of existing guidelines for the administration and monitoring of patients who receive sedation during medical procedures without an anaesthetist present means there is a lack of specific guidance regarding optimal nursing practices for the unique circumstances where nurse-administered procedural sedation and analgesia …

Pharmacological agents for procedural sedation and analgesia in patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Procedural sedation and analgesia is crucial for gastrointestinal endoscopy to improve patient comfort and facilitate procedural success. However, pharmacological agents differ in their efficacy and safety profiles, and the optimal agent to balance these outcomes remains uncertain, creating challenges in clinical decision-making. Therefore, we conducted a network meta-analysis to comprehensively evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of various pharmacological agents. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) from i…

Procedural sedation and analgesia versus general anesthesia for hysteroscopic myomectomy: A cost-effectiveness analysis alongside a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Hysteroscopic myomectomy is the first-choice treatment for symptomatic type 0 and 1 fibroids and was traditionally performed under general anesthesia. Over the last decade, surgical procedures have increasingly been performed in an outpatient setting under procedural sedation and analgesia. However, studies evaluating the safety and cost-effectiveness of hysteroscopic myomectomy under procedural sedation and analgesia are lacking. This study aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of procedural sedation and analgesia with propofol in an outpatient setting for hysteroscopic myomect…

A qualitative study of the barriers to procedural sedation practices in paediatric emergency medicine in the UK and Ireland.

INTRODUCTION: There is extensive literature on paediatric procedural sedation (PPS) and its clinical applications in emergency departments (EDs). While numerous guidance and policy documents exist from international bodies, there remains a lack of uniformity and consistency of PPS practices within EDs. PPS is now gaining traction in the UK and Ireland and this study aimed to describe existing PPS practices and identify any challenges to training and provision of ED-based PPS. METHODS: A qualitative approach was employed to capture data through a focus group interview. Nine consultants in emer…
