Impaired proprioceptive acuity at the proximal interphalangeal joint in patients with the hypermobility syndrome.

Twelve patients with the hypermobility syndrome (> or = 4 on the Beighton score) were examined to establish whether they showed any impairment of proprioception. A position matching paradigm was used which required subjects to align a finger silhouette with the kinaesthetically perceived position of their hidden index finger. Position sense at the PIP joint was found to be significantly (P < 0.0001) impaired in hypermobile patients who made larger matching errors at all angles compared to age- and sex-matched controls. The patients also demonstrated biasing in the direction of errors made when…

Normal proprioceptive trigeminal afferents in patients with Sjögren's syndrome and sensory neuronopathy.

A pure sensory neuropathy due to neuronal damage in the gasserian and spinal ganglia has been described in patients with Sjögren's syndrome. Conventional electromyographic (EMG) studies can demonstrate the selective involvement of the sensory pathways but they do not provide definite evidence for the site of the lesion. Noting that the trigeminal sensory neurons carrying cutaneous and muscular afferents are differentially located in the gasserian and mesencephalic nuclei, respectively, we carried out an electrophysiological study of the trigeminofacial and trigeminotrigeminal reflexes in 5 pat

Robotic assessment of proprioception in individuals with patellar tendinopathy: A feasibility and pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with patellar tendinopathy often exhibit impaired proprioception, which may contribute to symptom persistence and injury recurrence. A parallel robotic system based on a musculoskeletal knee model has shown valid and reliable performance for assessing joint position sense (JPS). This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of a protocol for the robotic assessment of knee proprioception in individuals with patellar tendinopathy and to compare their proprioceptive performance with that of healthy controls. METHODS: Twenty-one participants with patellar tendinopathy (PTG) …

Impact of lower limb proprioception on balance and gait in hemiparetic patients: biomechanical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sensory and proprioceptive dysfunction in the lower extremities occurs in up to 89% of hemiparetic stroke patients and contributes to gait abnormalities, postural instability, and increased fall risk. However, the specific relationships between objectively measured proprioceptive deficits and quantitative balance/gait parameters remain incompletely characterized. This study investigated the associations between lower extremity proprioceptive impairments (foot sole sensation, position sense, and kinesthesia) and objective measures of balance and gait in hemiparetic individuals. Proprioception Training and Surrogate Outcomes: A Systematic Review of Definitions, Measures, and Effectiveness Claims.

BACKGROUND: "Proprioception training" is widely advocated in rehabilitation and sports practice, yet the term encompasses heterogeneous constructs, interventions, and outcomes. Many trials infer proprioceptive benefits from surrogate outcomes (balance, strength, or pain) rather than direct psychophysical indices. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine how proprioception is defined and measured, and how improvement is claimed, in randomized controlled trials. METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were se…

Visuomotor Training to Enhance Proprioception of Contralateral Wrist Based on the Cross-Transfer Effect.

BACKGROUND: Neurological diseases such as stroke or Parkinson's disease are often accompanied by weakening or loss of proprioception, which seriously affects the motor control ability of the patients. However, proprioception rehabilitation is challenging due to the pain caused by impaired joints and the hard efforts that patients have to make during training. This study investigated the cross-transfer effect of short-term visuomotor training to the untrained wrist from the trained wrist, from both views of behavioral results and brain activity analyses. METHODS: Thirty healthy volunteers aged…

Robot-aided assessment and associated brain lesions of impaired ankle proprioception in chronic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Impaired ankle proprioception strongly predicts balance dysfunction in chronic stroke. However, only sparse data on ankle position sense and no systematic data on ankle motion sense dysfunction in stroke are available. Moreover, the lesion sites underlying impaired ankle proprioception have not been comprehensively delineated. Using robotic technology, this study quantified ankle proprioceptive deficits post-stroke and determined the associated brain lesions. METHODS: Twelve adults with chronic stroke and 13 neurotypical adults participated. A robot passively plantarflexed a parti…

Effect of Kinesio taping on wrist proprioception in healthy subjects: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Although the use of KT has increased considerably in the clinical practice in the last years, there is limited evidence about the effects of its application in proprioception. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of KT on joint position sense and force sense on the wrist of healthy subjects. METHODS: Fifty-four subjects were analyzed in a randomized, crossover, single-blind study design. To determine the force sense, the subjects had to reach 50% of their maximum grip force. Wrist joint position sense was assessed during active repositioning tests at the tar…

Proprioception and its relationship with range of motion in hypermobile and normal mobile children.

To investigate differences in proprioception using four proprioceptive tests in children with and without hypermobility. Additionally, it was tested if the results on one proprioceptive test predict the results on the other tests. Of the children (8-11years), 100 were classified as normal mobile (Beighton score 0-4) and 50 as hypermobile (Beighton score 5-9). To test proprioception, in the upper extremity the unilateral and bilateral joint position reproduction tasks were used and for the lower extremity the loaded and unloaded wedges task. No differences were found in any of the proprioceptio…

Reliability of a three-dimensional spinal proprioception assessment for patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

PURPOSE: Although it is evident that some patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) have proprioceptive deficit in peripheral joints, knowledge on the proprioceptive function of the deformed spine is limited. Nonetheless, spinal proprioception in AIS may be affected three-dimensionally, prior studies only focussed on evaluating peripheral proprioception in single plane. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a novel spinal proprioception assessment using three-dimensional motion analysis in patients with AIS. METHODS: Participants were included if they had a primary diagnosis of AIS…

Effects on proprioception by Kinesio taping of the knee after anterior cruciate ligament rupture.

INTRODUCTION: The use of Kinesio tape (KT) to improve proprioception is a matter of considerable debate. In comparison, the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament is a sufficiently well-investigated injury with a proven compromise of proprioception. The objective of the present study was to assess a supportive effect on proprioception after KT application, taking the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture as an example. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight patients who had suffered an ACL rupture, confirmed clinically and by magnetic resonance imaging, and who were treated conservatively o…

Effect of stochastic resonance on proprioception and kinesthesia in anterior cruciate ligament reconstructed patients.

Low amplitude mechanical noise vibration has been shown to improve somatosensory acuity in various clinical groups with comparable deficiencies through a phenomenon known as Stochastic Resonance (SR). This technology showed promising outcomes in improving somatosensory acuity in other clinical patients (e.g., Parkinson's disease and osteoarthritis). Some degree of chronic somatosensory deficiency in the knee has been reported following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. In this study, the effect of the SR phenomenon on improving knee somatosensory acuity (proprioception a…
