[Chronic prurigo: overview of pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment].

BACKGROUND: Chronic prurigo (CPG) remains a challenging disease. Besides diagnosis, which mostly relies on the S2k-guideline diagnosis and treatment of chronic pruritus, two systemic agents have been approved for the treatment of CPG in recent years. OBJECTIVES: This review aims to provide an overview of the pathophysiology and current diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations for CPG. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this review, a literature and clinical trial search was conducted via PubMed and Clinical Trials using the terms 'chronic prurigo', 'prurigo nodularis', 'pathophysiology', 'diagnosi…

Clinical Presentation and Treatment of a Patient With Prurigo Pigmentosa.

Prurigo pigmentosa is a rare inflammatory condition whose exact etiology is unknown; however, it is often misdiagnosed as eczema, contact dermatitis, or confluent and reticulated papillomatosis. A healthy 18-year-old male presented to the clinic with prurigo pigmentosa that developed after starting a ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. The diagnosis was based on clinical and histopathologic findings. Treatment with oral minocycline and discontinuation of the diet led to complete resolution with no subsequent recurrence.

[Prurigo pigmentosa: Case report of a German adolescent].

Prurigo pigmentosa is an inflammatory dermatosis that rarely occurs in Europe and mostly affects young women. Here, we describe the typical clinical and dermoscopic criteria so that therapy can be initiated as early as possible. The 17-year-old patient presented here shows that this disease can also be observed in Western Europe and in men, and that doxycycline is a very effective treatment option.

Post bariatric surgery prurigo pigmentosa in an adolescent.

Prurigo pigmentosa is an inflammatory skin condition that is characterized by the presence of pruritic reticulated hyperpigmented papules or vesicles of the upper trunk. Previously, this condition was rarely encountered until the rise in popularity of weight reduction methods. Even with the increased prevalence, most affected patients are still adults. We present the case of an adolescent who was successfully treated with doxycycline and encouraged to resume eating.

Patient Perspectives on Living With Severe Prurigo Nodularis.

IMPORTANCE: Because of a paucity of qualitative research on prurigo nodularis (PN), the symptoms and impacts of PN that are most important to patients are poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To explore patients' perspectives on their PN symptoms and to understand the impacts of the condition. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: One-on-one qualitative telephone interviews were held with English-speaking US adults aged 18 years or older with a confirmed diagnosis of PN, severe pruritus, and moderate to severe sleep disturbance. Participants were recruited via patient associations, patient panels, and…

Chronic prurigo: A retrospective study of 168 cases.

Chronic prurigo is classified into two clinical subtypes: prurigo nodularis (PN) and prurigo chronica multiformis (PCM) in Japan. In this study, we retrospectively investigated the clinical features of 168 patients with chronic prurigo (103 with PN and 65 with PCM) diagnosed at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University, and compared age, sex, prevalence of comorbidities, blood test results, histology and treatment efficacy in both groups. We found that patients with PCM were significantly older than those with PN. Males were more frequently diagnosed with PCM than females; however, both sexes we…

Trial of Nemolizumab in Moderate-to-Severe Prurigo Nodularis.

BACKGROUND: Prurigo nodularis is a chronic pruritic skin disease with multiple nodular skin lesions. Nemolizumab is a monoclonal antibody targeting the interleukin-31 receptor, which is involved in the pathogenesis of prurigo nodularis. METHODS: We conducted a 12-week, randomized, double-blind, phase 2 trial of nemolizumab (at a dose of 0.5 mg per kilogram of body weight) administered subcutaneously at baseline, week 4, and week 8, as compared with placebo, in patients with moderate-to-severe prurigo nodularis and severe pruritus. Moderate-to-severe prurigo nodularis was defined as 20 or more…

Pathophysiology, diagnosis, and pharmacological treatment of prurigo nodularis.

Introduction: Prurigo nodularis (PN) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by intensely pruritic, hyperkeratotic nodules distributed on the trunk and extensor surfaces of the extremities. PN has a profoundly negative impact on sleep and quality of life in patients with PN. There are currently no U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved agents and patients are often recalcitrant to current therapies, highlighting the importance of further research into this severely debilitating condition. Areas covered: A PubMed search was conducted to find available literature on the pathophy…

Inpatient Burden of Prurigo Nodularis in the United States.

Background: Although prurigo nodularis (PN) has a significant burden of disease, little is known about its epidemiology and disease burden within the United States. We describe the characteristics of hospitalized patients diagnosed with PN and assess the factors associated with hospitalization. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study of the 2016 National Inpatient Sample, a representative sample of 20% of hospital discharges nationally. Results: Patients diagnosed with PN accounted for 3.7 inpatient visits per 100,000 discharges nationally in 2016. Patients with PN were more likely to be…
