Evidence for different types of mechanoreceptors from measurements of the psychophysical threshold for vibrations under different stimulation conditions.

The shape of the psychophysical frequency threshold curve for vibrations presented to the skin in the frequency region 5-1000 Hz is strongly dependent on the static force that the vibrator exerts on the skin and on whether there is a rigid surround around the vibrating contactor (presence of contrast). Where there is no rigid surround, an increase in static force reduces the threshold in the high-frequency region and increases it at low frequencies. When the static forces are sufficiently large, the thresholds reach a minimum value above 30 Hz and a maximum one below 30 Hz, this being the cros

Magda Arnold's understanding of the human person: Thomistic personalism, psychophysical unity of the person, integration of personality, and transcendence.

Magda Arnold (1903-2002) is well known for her research on emotions, motivation, and memory from a neurological, physiological, and psychological point of view. However, her works in the field of the anthropological foundations of personality are less known and discussed. The present study presents some aspects of Arnold's conception of a human's nature as being based or convergent on Aquinas's doctrine: (a) a nonreductionist conception of the human being, (b) the psychophysical unity of the person, (c) the self-ideal as it ought to be as the main factor of personality integration, and (d) God

Task set and instructions influence the weight of figural priors: A psychophysical study with extremal edges and familiar configuration.

In figure-ground organization, the figure is defined as a region that is both "shaped" and "nearer." Here we test whether changes in task set and instructions can alter the outcome of the cross-border competition between figural priors that underlies figure assignment. Extremal edge (EE), a relative distance prior, has been established as a strong figural prior when the task is to report "which side is nearer?" In three experiments using bipartite stimuli, EEs competed and cooperated with familiar configuration, a shape prior for figure assignment in a "which side is shaped?" task." Experiment

Psychophysical suppression measured with bandlimited noise extended below and/or above the signal: effects of age and hearing loss.

The objectives of this study were to measure suppression with bandlimited noise extended below and above the signal, at lower and higher signal frequencies, between younger and older subjects, and between subjects with normal hearing and cochlear hearing loss. Psychophysical suppression was assessed by measuring forward-masked thresholds at 0.8 and 2.0 kHz in bandlimited maskers as a function of masker bandwidth. Bandpass-masker bandwidth was increased by introducing noise components below and above the signal frequency while keeping the noise centered on the signal frequency, and also by addi

Autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa with apparent incomplete penetrance: a clinical, electrophysiological, psychophysical, and molecular genetic study.

Twenty five symptomatic individuals and six asymptomatic obligate gene carriers from four families with autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (adRP) showing apparent incomplete penetrance have been studied. Symptomatic individuals from three families showed early onset of night blindness, non-recordable rod electroretinograms, and marked elevation of both rod and cone thresholds in all subjects tested. In the fourth family, there was more variation in the age of onset of night blindness and some symptomatic individuals showed well preserved rod and cone function in some retinal areas. All as

[Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of hysteric amblyopia using psychophysical and electro-ophthalmological examination methods (author's transl)].

In three patients with psychogenic amblyopia the computerized visual field, the ERG, the flash light (H-EP) and pattern reversal stimulated (M-EP) cortical potentials were recorded. Differential diagnosis between psychogenic amblyopia on the one hand, and functional amblyopia and organic lesions of the retrobulbar visual pathways on the other was shown to be possible. In the cases with organic retrobulbar lesions of visual pathways, visual field defects and pathologic H-EP's and M-EP's were found. In functional amblyopia only the M-EP responses are diminished in amplitude. In psychogenic ambly

Psychophysical Olfactory Outcomes After Biologic Therapy for Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Smell loss is among the most debilitating symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). We aimed to synthesize current evidence on the smell-restoring efficacy of biologics, focusing on outcomes measured by psychophysical tests. RECENT FINDINGS: Biologics mark a paradigm shift in the management of refractory CRSwNP, offering targeted, effective and safe treatment options. However, their relative impact on psychophysical smell outcomes remains uncertain. With new biologics emerging and real-world evidence accumulating, a comprehensive evaluation is warranted.

Contributions of aging, auditory nerve health, and speed of processing to psychophysical gap detection thresholds in cochlear implant users.

Precise encoding of temporal speech cues is critical for speech understanding and are especially important for cochlear implant (CI) users, who receive limited spectral information. Silent gap detection is a simple index of auditory temporal precision, yet mechanisms and stimulus parameters driving variability in CI gap detection thresholds (GDTs) remain unclear. The overall aim of this study was to describe how AN density, aging, pulse rate, and cognitive speed of processing contribute to GDTs in adult CI users. Twenty post-lingually deafened adult Cochlear™ CI users (37-87 years) participate

Perceptual Distortions in Aided Hearing-Impaired Listeners: Psychophysical Evidence of Excessive Loudness Growth and Altered Timbre Representation.

Hearing aid users often report that some everyday sounds are abnormally intrusive or salient. This issue may stem from distorted coding of sound features due to peripheral impairments and/or hearing aid processing. This study investigates whether aided hearing-impaired (aHI) listeners experience (1) abnormal loudness processing and (2) distorted timbre perception, both of which may contribute to this problem. In Experiment 1, we measured loudness functions using sounds varying in four timbre dimensions (brightness, spectral flux, attack time, roughness) in normal-hearing (NH) and aHI listeners

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection in patients with prior psychophysical stress: a systematic review of case reports and case series.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is an underdiagnosed cause of acute coronary syndrome, particularly in younger women. Due to limited information about SCAD, case reports and case series can provide valuable insights into its features and management. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the features of SCAD patients who experienced psychophysical stress before the SCAD event. METHODS: We conducted an electronic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception until January 7, 2023. We included case reports or series that described patients with SCAD

Understanding the interaction between clinical, emotional and psychophysical outcomes underlying tension-type headache: a network analysis approach.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence supports that tension-type headache (TTH) involves complex underlying mechanisms. The current study aimed to quantify potential multivariate relationships between headache-related, psychophysical, psychological and health-related variables in patients with TTH using network analysis. METHODS: Demographic (age, height, weight), headache-related (intensity, frequency, duration, and headache-related disability), psychological and emotional (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), psycho-physical (pressure pain thresholds [PPTs] and myofascial t
