Relationship between vitamin D deficiency and psychophysiological variables: a systematic review of the literature.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a role not only in calcium homeostasis, but also in several other functions, including cell growth and immune functions, and is considered a neurosteroid. Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent worldwide and has been suggested to be associated with an increased risk of emotional disorders. Therefore, the association between vitamin D levels and psychophysiological disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and mood, has been investigated. To list these variables, a bibliographical literature research was conducted in the MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Scien

Stop Saying That It Is Wrong! Psychophysiological, Cognitive, and Metacognitive Markers of Children's Sensitivity to Punishment.

Neurodevelopmental evidence suggests that children's main decision-making strategy is to avoid options likely to induce punishment. However, the cognitive and affective factors contributing to children's avoidance to high punishment frequency remain unknown. The present study explored psychophysiological, cognitive, and metacognitive processes associated with sensitivity to punishment frequency. We evaluated 54 participants (between 8 and 15 years old) with a modified Iowa Gambling Task for children (IGT-C) which included options with varying long-term profit and punishment frequencies. Interstitial Cystitis - Elucidation of Psychophysiologic and Autonomic Characteristics (the ICEPAC Study): design and methods.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is relatively common and associated with severe pain, yet effective treatment remains elusive. Research typically emphasized the bladder's role, but given the high presence of systemic comorbidities, the authors hypothesized a pathophysiologic nervous system role. This paper reports the methodology and approach to study the nervous system in women with IC/BPS. The study compares neurologic, urologic, gynecologic, autonomic, gastrointestinal, and psychological features of women with IC/BPS, their female relatives, wome

Psychophysiological responses to emotional stimuli in children and adolescents with autism and fragile X syndrome.

Individuals with autism demonstrate atypical and variable responses to social and emotional stimuli, perhaps reflecting heterogeneity of the disorder. The goal of this study was to determine whether unique profiles of psychophysiological responses to such stimuli could be identified in individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with fragile X syndrome (FXS), and with comorbid autism and fragile X syndrome (ASD + FXS), and in typically developing (TYP) individuals. This study included 52 boys (ages 10-17): idiopathic ASD (n = 12), FXS (n = 12), comorbid ASD + FXS (n = 17), and T

Altered psychophysiological responses to the view of others' pain and anger faces in fibromyalgia patients.

UNLABELLED: Facial expression provides information for an accurate estimation of others' pain. Nevertheless, little is known about psychophysiological responses to pain faces in chronic pain. Event-related potentials and brain oscillations, corrugator activity, and heart rate were recorded in 20 fibromyalgia patients and 20 pain-free controls when viewing pain, anger, happy, and neutral faces. Pain and anger faces elicited greater unpleasantness and arousal than happy and neutral faces, and pain faces evoked greater corrugator response than the rest of faces in all participants. Fibromyalgia p

Anxiety impairs decision-making: psychophysiological evidence from an Iowa Gambling Task.

Using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and psychophysiological correlates of emotional responses (i.e., heart rate and skin conductance), we investigate the effects of trait anxiety (TA) on decision-making. We find that high TA is associated with both impaired decision-making and increased anticipatory physiological (somatic) responses prior to advantageous trials. For both high and low TA, skin conductance responses preceding advantageous trials predict decisions. At the same time, somatic responses to choice outcomes reflect differences between high and low TA sensitivities to punishments and re

Preliminary feasibility and efficacy of a brief motivational intervention with psychophysiological feedback for cocaine abuse.

Motivational interviewing (MI) with personalized feedback, particularly related to biological markers of risk or harm, has been found effective for alcohol use disorders, but has not been fully investigated in cocaine use disorders. A randomized, controlled pilot study evaluating the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a brief MI intervention using EEG/ERP graphical feedback for cocaine abusers was conducted. Treatment-seeking cocaine abusers (N = 31) were randomly assigned to a two-session MI intervention or a minimal control condition. All participants received EEG assessments at intake

Psychophysiological correlates of the inter-individual variability of head movement control in seated humans.

We recently conducted experiments where 24 seated participants were subjected (with eyes closed) to small amplitude, high-jerk impulses of linear acceleration. Responses were distributed as a continuum between two extremes. The "stiff" participants showed little movement of the head relative to the trunk, whereas the "floppy" participants showed a large head rotation in the direction opposite the sled movement. We hypothesized that the stiff behavior resulted from the spontaneous use of an imagined visual frame of reference and undertook this larger-scale study to test that idea. The distribut

Psychophysiological reactions in dental phobic patients with direct vs. indirect fear acquisition.

Dental phobic patients with reported traumatic experiences at onset of dental anxiety were compared to subjects with an indirect fear acquisition in their psychophysiological responses to video scenes showing dental procedures. It has been suggested that individuals with conditioned fear would respond with higher levels of physiological arousal in response to threat compared to subjects with indirect fear acquisition. Although the overall pattern indicates support for this hypothesis, subjects grouped on the basis of their reported fear-etiology did not statistically differ in recorded muscle

Phentolamine mesylate in postmenopausal women with female sexual arousal disorder: a psychophysiological study.

The objective of this study was to assess the potential of phentolamine as a treatment of postmenopausal women with female arousal disorder (FSAD). Vaginal photoplethismography and a subjective questionnaire were used. Forty one women were enrolled and four treatments were tested: vaginal solutions 5 mg and 40 mg and an oral tablet each of 40 mg of phentolamine and placebo. Physiological readings were significantly different from placebo in the women using hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with 40 mg of phentolamine in vaginal solution (p = 0.0186). Subjective reports also were significantly d

Cigarette smoking and psychophysiological stress responsiveness: effects of recent smoking and temporary abstinence.

Studies comparing the cardiovascular function and stress responsiveness of regular smokers and non-smokers have produced mixed results, possibly because of variable intervals between stress tests and recency of smoking. This experiment compared the cardiovascular, cortisol and affective responses to a problem solving task of non-smoking young men (n = 16) and regular smokers randomised to overnight abstinence (n = 14) and smoking 30 min prior to testing (n = 19). Smoking status was validated biochemically. Overnight abstinence was associated with reduced diastolic blood pressure at rest and wi

Understanding and diagnosing sexual dysfunction: recent progress through psychophysiological and psychophysical methods.

The psychophysiological method has been applied to the study of human sexual response for well over three decades. The value of this method in providing an objective, integrated approach to the understanding of sexual response, and more specifically sexual dysfunction, is presented. Selected results from recent studies using this methodology illustrate the complex relationships that emerge among cognitive, affective, and physiological components of the sexual response. In addition, data from a systematic study of the use of psychophysiological procedures as an aid in differential diagnosis are

[The recognition of the facial expression of emotions by patients with endogenous depression (clinico-psychophysiological research)].

The recognition of facial emotional expression in depressed patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and slow progressive schizophrenia (SPS) in acute state and in remission was studied in comparison with healthy persons. All the subjects were right-handed. The drawings of sad, neutral and happy faces followed by masking stimulus were displayed in the center field and in the left or right hemifield of vision on the computer screen for 80 ms. All the depressed patients revealed marked impairment of facial emotion recognition, especially for negative on, and disturbances of hemisphere asymm

The effect of biologically-active light on the noo- and thymopsyche and on psychophysiological variables in healthy volunteers.

The study was carried out to show how bright light affects intellectual mnestic performance alertness, mood and psychophysiological variables in order to understand the mechanism of bright light which is still unclear. 15 healthy normal volunteers (8 males, 7 females) aged 22-34 years (mean 27) participated in the study. Exposure to bright light (2500 lux) or dim light (500 lux) was intermittent for 4 h between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Psychometric investigations for assessment of noopsychic variables, such as attention and concentration on the one hand, and thymopsychic variables, such as drive, on

Psychophysiological reactivity in type A and B women during a rapid information processing task.

Type A and Type B women assessed by a newly developed German questionnaire 'need for control' (NC) were compared with respect to time-pressured information processing performance and to simultaneously recorded psychophysiological reactivity. The task was computer controlled, monetarily reinforced and subject paced. The physiological measurements included the cardiovascular parameters, ECG and finger plethysmographic amplitudes and the noncardiovascular parameters, EMG (frontal muscle), skin conductance reactivity, and respiration. NC-Type A and Type B women did not differ in performance, but t

[Clinical, psychological, and psychophysiological characteristics of neurotic-functional, cardiovascular and neurotic-depressive syndromes].

A total of ninety women classified into three groups (with cardiovascular, depressive, and other principal symptoms) according to clinical criteria were characterized by clinico-anamnestic, psychological, and psychophysiological data with the goal of arriving at a practically oriented differentiation of neurotic syndromes. The relevant variables were determined by means of a factor analysis. The physiological reaction patterns determined in experiments on psychically strained individuals proved unsuitable for the differentiation of the two syndromes. The problems associated with a symptom-orie

Investigating Coping Processes and Psychophysiological Responses to Uncertainty in Eleven-Year-Old Children.

This experimental study investigated the cognitive, behavioral, and physiological responses of 11-year-old children when confronted with uncertainty. Using a reward-feedback-based simulation, participants engaged in decision-making tasks involving ambiguous outcomes while their heart rate, decision time, hesitation behavior, and verbalized thought processes were systematically recorded. Findings demonstrated that uncertainty led to increased physiological arousal, longer decision times, greater hesitation, and lower decision accuracy. Regression analysis revealed hesitation as the strongest pr

Psychophysiological Outcome Responses in Human Pavlovian Fear Conditioning: A Prediction Error Analysis.

Prediction errors (PE) are thought to drive associative learning. While neural signals consistent with PE encoding have been identified, the expression of PE in psychophysiological indices remains debated. Here, we sought to fill this gap by investigating responses to unconditioned stimulus (US) occurrence and probability in skin conductance responses (SCR), pupil size responses (PSR), heart period responses (HPR), and respiration amplitude responses (RAR). Data set 1 consisted of eight published studies (N1 = 264) using differential fear conditioning with partial reinforcement (50%), and nove

Spectator to a Meeting of Minds: Vicarious Eye Contact Elicits Psychophysiological Responses in the Observer.

Research has shown that dyadic eye contact elicits psychophysiological responses related to affect and attention. In daily life, we also frequently notice eye contact occurring between other people, even when we are not directly involved. This study investigated whether such vicarious eye contact elicits affect- and attention-related psychophysiological responses in observers. In two experiments, we measured participants' skin conductance (affective arousal), facial muscle activity (affective valence/affiliation), and heart rate deceleration (attention orienting) responses while they viewed ga
