Secondary side-effects often occur in women undergoing hormonal stimulation treatment with clomiphene citrate. In general 10.4% of women experience hot flushing, 5.5% have complaints caused by enlargement of the ovaries and 3.5% experience central nervous symptoms (nervousness, sleeplessness, headaches, visual disturbances, vertigo). During ovarian stimulation with clomiphene citrate for in-vitro fertilization, a 32 year old patient developed psychotic symptoms, commencing 3 days after initiation of treatment. Hospitalization in the psychiatric ward became necessary when severe formal and rati

Ephedrine has both alpha- and beta-adrenergic activity, and both direct and indirect effects on receptors. Its stimulatory effects on the central nervous system are more prolonged, though less potent, than those of adrenalin. It raises blood pressure both by increasing cardiac output and inducing peripheral vasoconstriction. It is still commonly used as a bronchodilator. However, since prolonged use leads to decreased effectiveness, patients tend to increase the dose themselves. The clinical picture of ephedrine psychosis resembles that induced by amphetamines: primarily a paranoid psychosis w

Five female patients who developed psychosis while taking diethylpropion hydrochloride are described, four with paranoid psychosis and one with manic psychosis. In all but one patient, these drugs were medically prescribed. Although relatively few cases of psychosis and psychosis-like illness were reported to the Committee for Safety of Medicines from 1963 until 1986, further cases may be anticipated. Patients on the drug should be carefully supervised and it should not be prescribed to those with personality disorder, previous evidence of amphetamine, alcohol, or other drug abuse, or those wi

Synthetic cannabinoids are relatively new substances of abuse. Recently, abuse of synthetic cannabinoids has been increasingly reported in the lay press and medical literature. When new compounds are introduced, their use is initially not restricted by prohibition therefore their consumption cannot be verified by standard drug tests. The use of these compounds among adolescents and young adults is constantly growing, making it important for emergency services to be familiar with the signs and symptoms of intoxication present. Overdose and chronic use of these substances can cause adverse effec

This report describes three male patients arrested for aggressive and combative behavior, characteristic of phencyclidine intoxication, in whom severe hyperthermia, respiratory failure, and coma developed. Two days after the malignant hyperthermic event, serum transaminase levels rose acutely to extremely high levels with concomitant elevations in bilirubin levels and a fall in prothrombin activity. Liver biopsy specimens in two patients showed marked perivenular necrosis and collapse. No specific treatment was directed at the phencyclidine intoxication. Two of the three patients survived. Sub

BACKGROUND: The widespread availability and accessibility of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines play a vital role in modern healthcare systems, enabling individuals to manage minor health concerns independently. However, certain OTC medications possess pharmacological properties that render them susceptible to misuse and abuse, including stimulants, laxatives, sedatives, and opiate-containing products. Misuse involves improper dosage, duration, or indication, while abuse entails non-therapeutic use to achieve psychoactive effects or other illicit purposes, potentially leading to dependence and a

Consumption of synthetic mind-altering compounds, also known as "new psychoactive substances," is increasing globally at an alarming rate. Synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) are among the most commonly used new psychoactive substances. They are usually purchased as marijuana-like drugs, marketed as herbal blends and perceived as risk-free by inexperienced users. Yet, contrary to Δ(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol, SCs may lead to severe health consequences, including anxiety, tachycardia, hallucinations, violent behavior, and psychosis. This review focuses on the latest (2010-2015) evidence of psychotic symp

This article presents two cases of adolescent males who were admitted to our inpatient psychiatric unit with a psychotic, disorganized presentation. Both males had a genetic vulnerability to mental illness and reported significant substance use. Their symptoms were refractory to treatment and required the use of clozapine. Both patients experienced significant side effects, which limited the maximum daily dose of clozapine. However, they responded to a dose that was much lower than that typically used in adults. There is significant evidence in the literature about cannabis use triggering psyc

BACKGROUND: The international drug market has dramatically changed with the emergence of various new psychoactive substances that are mostly being sold on the internet. One of those new psychoactive substances is methoxetamine (MXE), a structural analogue of ketamine.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 30-year-old man with no history of illness was presented to the accident and emergency department. He had lost his balance and could not move. He was in a dissociative psychosis, felt he had no control over his body and was extremely frightened. Most of this symptoms disappeared within two hours of arrival. T

INTRODUCTION: Model psychosis is characterised by experimentally induced symptoms of withdrawal from reality, frequently accompanied by perceptual disturbances, thought disorders, delusional ideas and sometimes by hallucinations. These "altered states of consciousness" provide a long-standing and valid approach to enhance our understanding of certain aspects of schizophrenia.
DISCUSSION: Targeting the endocannabinoid system to investigate its involvement in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia became increasingly relevant with the discovery of this system and amounting epidemiological evidenc
