Although several studies have examined the effects of psychotherapy on chronic depression and dysthymia, no meta-analysis has been conducted to integrate results of these studies. We conducted a meta-analysis of 16 randomized trials examining the effects of psychotherapy on chronic depression and dysthymia. We found that psychotherapy had a small but significant effect (d=0.23) on depression when compared to control groups. Psychotherapy was significantly less effective than pharmacotherapy in direct comparisons (d=-0.31), especially SSRIs, but that this finding was wholly attributable to dyst

The value of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) and of psychotherapy in the treatment of lower abdominal pain due to pelvic congestion was assessed in a randomized controlled trial. Eighty-four women with abnormal pelvic venography were assigned to one of four treatment groups: MPA alone, MPA plus psychotherapy, placebo alone, and placebo plus psychotherapy. Women were treated for 4 months and thereafter followed up regularly for 9 months with pain assessments, pelvic ultrasound scanning, and hormone measurements. During treatment, MPA showed a significant benefit in terms of a reduction in vis

Guilt and shame can be very relevant when treating personality disorders. Understanding how they block the patients' capacity to figure out they can fulfill their wishes is central for a fine-grained case formulation, and for counteracting their contribution to symptom and goal fulfillment. To this purpose we will describe how Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy, delivered in a combined individual and an open-group format, addressed pathological emotions of shame and guilt in the case of Martina, a woman suffering from Borderline PD with avoidant and dependent traits. We show how the therapist

Multiple channel exposure therapy (M-CET; Falsetti & Resnick, 2000) was developed to treat posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with comorbid panic attacks and can be administered in a group format. In addition to being a cost-effective way to provide treatment, group treatment for those with PTSD has been proposed as potentially very beneficial for addressing feelings of shame related to the traumatic event as well as social isolation in general (Foy et al., 2000). Previous studies of M-CET indicate that it may be effective for the treatment of PTSD with comorbid panic attacks (Falsetti et al

Biofeedback combined with psychotherapy has been recognized as a potential treatment for patients with functional constipation, anxiety and depression disorder. To validate the therapeutic effect of the biofeedback therapy, 120 patients with a clear diagnosis of functional constipation combined with anxiety and depression disorder were recruited, and then randomly divided into the control group (patients received gastrointestinal medication and anti-anxiety and depression medication) and the treatment group (patients received combined biofeedback and psychotherapy on the basis of the control g

Aims: Research conducted prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic indicates that remote psychotherapy is as effective as in-person treatment. At that time, it usually was the therapist's individual choice to work remotely, whereas the pandemic pushed psychotherapists, including previous skeptics, to incorporate remote work methods into their routine due to limited face-to-face contact. There is little knowledge of the way therapists experienced this sudden and forced transition to remote psychotherapy as the only treatment option. The present study aims to assess psychotherapists' experienc

INTRODUCTION: Although an open-group model is often used in substance use treatment, there are no evidence-based open-group treatment protocols. A large federal substance treatment agency (the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment Program within the Department of the Air Force) requested an evidence-informed open-group treatment protocol to treat alcohol misuse to implement throughout their clinics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The research team: (a) compiled and reviewed manuals for empirically supported closed groups, general literature, and best practices; (b) developed an overarching

OBJECTIVES: People with Mild Cognitive Impairment (PwMCI) often experience depression and anxiety, which may increase the risk of dementia. While psychological therapy for PwMCI has been explored, the effectiveness of group-based interventions has not. This review systematically examined the methodological quality and effectiveness of group psychological interventions for PwMCI.
METHOD: Five databases were searched for studies examining group psychological interventions for PwMCI. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria and were assessed using the Psychotherapy Outcome Study Methodology Rating

Research has investigated the outcomes of compassion-focused therapy for adult populations, with systematic reviews and meta-analyses supporting its effectiveness. Comparatively, the literature investigating compassion-focused interventions for child and adolescent populations is less developed, with fewer empirical studies to date. Most existing literature on compassion interventions has been in a group context. A systematic review was conducted to explore the state of the evidence base for compassion-focused groups used with child and adolescent clinical populations. This narrative synthesis

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is highly prevalent with significant lifetime impacts, especially when left untreated. Cognitive behavioral therapy is the current gold standard treatment with successful patient outcomes. Cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) is one form that provides unique benefits to participants including normalization of symptoms and social support, as well as providing increased access to treatment at a lower per-session cost. Research on this mode of treatment has been ongoing for over 20 years, but we still have much to learn about its overall efficacy. The goals of t

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: It has been suggested that reassurance seeking may play an important role in the development and maintenance of common mental health problems such as OCD and depression. We considered the extent of reassurance seeking in depression and OCD relative to a healthy comparison group and tested the hypothesis that reassurance seeking is primarily motivated by threat in those suffering from OCD and by interpersonal concerns in those suffering from depression.
METHODS: The frequency and intensity of reassurance seeking and the motivation for seeking reassurance was measured

BACKGROUND: Gender-specific literature focused on gambling disorder (GD) is scarce, and women with GD have been understudied. Therefore, the aim of this study was to estimate the short-term effectiveness in women with GD (n = 214) of a group standardized cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and to identify the most relevant predictors of the primary therapy outcomes (dropout and relapse).
METHODS: The manualized CBT consisted of 16 weekly outpatient group sessions. Women were provided with resources to obtain a better understanding of the GD, to improve self-control and to manage risk situation

Objective: Most studies focus on overall treatment effects by assessing symptom severity before and after treatment, but few investigate session-specific effects of an intervention. The aim of the present study was to elucidate session-specific effects of a group therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) that targets cognitive biases known as the Metacognitive Training for OCD (MCT-OCD).Method: In an uncontrolled pilot trial, 44 inpatients with OCD participated in the MCT-OCD once a week over four weeks. Before and after each session, patients answered questionnaires on thought monitorin

The present study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of assertiveness group training on social anxiety (SAD) between deaf and hearing impaired adolescents. Forty eight (24 deaf and 24 hearing impaired) people participated in this study. First, participants with SAD, i.e. attaining the scores above 40 for Connor's Social Inventory Scale 2000 (SPIN), were selected according to convenience sampling and randomly assigned to two groups, i.e. intervention and control. Then, assertiveness group training was conducted for intervention group within 10 sessions, and immediately after completion

This paper describes a model for coleadership of a multifamily group which is part of an outpatient treatment program for adolescents with anorexia and bulimia nervosa at The Children's Hospital in Boston. This clinic is a collaborative effort between the Departments of Psychiatry and Adolescent Medicine and has been involved with more than 600 patients and their families. The parents of a recovered adolescent girl have shared group leadership with the author for six years and have added an innovative dimension to the group process as a result of their own experiences.
