Clinical outcomes of vinorelbine loading CalliSpheres beads in the treatment of previously treated advanced lung cancer with progressive refractory obstructive atelectasis.

Background: Drug-eluting beads bronchial arterial chemoembolization (DEB-BACE) has been used in the treatment of locally advanced lung cance … e first follow-up. The reasons for poor prognosis were tumor necrosis, longer disease duration, and pulmonary atelectasis duration (p = 0.012, p = 0.038, p = 0.029). Massive hemoptysis was observed in two cases, and one patient died of asphyxia caused by hemoptysis. Moderate hemoptysis occurred in one case. All three adverse events were considered as the result of the …

The evaluation of non-anesthetic computed tomography for detection of pulmonary parenchyma in feline mammary gland carcinoma: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic radiography in awake cats is a common procedure for the evaluation of pulmonary metastasis in feline mammary gland carcinoma (MGC). However, due to poor sensitivity, computed tomography (CT) is progressively taking its place. To perform CT in animals, general anesthesia is normally preferred but can cause lung atelectasis, affecting lung interpretation. Besides, MGC is often found in senile cats that are concurrently affected with other diseases, increasing anesthetic risk. Therefore, this study was aimed at comparing the effect of anesthesia on lung atelectasis observed t

"Tailored" vs. "one-size-fits-all": current knowledge of individualized PEEP and constant PEEP strategy during the perioperative period.

Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are dramatically associated with prolonged hospitalization and increased mortality rates in surgical patients. Positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), a standardized lung-protective strategy, has been proven to effectively improve perioperative oxygenation and pulmonary compliance. However, constant high PEEP may induce alveolar hyperventilation and elevate pulmonary vascular resistance, while fixed low PEEP may not prevent atelectasis and even cause PPCs. Currently, an individualized PEEP (iPEEP) approach is found to be superior to the constant PE

Endoscopic central airway recanalization to enable first line pembrolizumab treatment in a PD-L1 strongly positive non-small cell lung cancer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Tracheobronchial malignant stenosis is a life-threatening condition which may cause recurrent infections due to lung atelectasis. Despite immunotherapy is less toxic than standard chemotherapy, recurrent lung infections may represent a challenge for this treatment. We report a clinical case of a patient with metastatic squamous cell carcinoma suffering from pulmonary infections due to central airway obstruction who underwent endoscopic recanalization followed by immunotherapy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 64 year-old man was referred to our attention for the management of metastatic squam

Computed tomographic assessment of lung weights in trauma patients with early posttraumatic lung dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Quantitative computed tomography (qCT)-based assessment of total lung weight (Mlung) has the potential to differentiate atelectasis from consolidation and could thus provide valuable information for managing trauma patients fulfilling commonly used criteria for acute lung injury (ALI). We hypothesized that qCT would identify atelectasis as a frequent mimic of early posttraumatic ALI. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, Mlung was calculated by qCT in 78 mechanically ventilated trauma patients fulfilling the ALI criteria at admission. A reference interval for Mlung w

A very unusual presentation of Niemann-Pick disease type B in an infant: similar findings to congenital lobar emphysema.

The main features of Niemann-Pick disease type B (NPD-B) are enlargement of the liver and spleen, and mild pulmonary involvement. Recurrent respiratory tract infection and progressive decline in pulmonary function are major contributors to morbidity and mortality in this patient group. Massive pulmonary involvement in early life is extremely rare. The most common finding on chest X-rays of NPD-B patients is reticular or nodular infiltration of the lungs. This article describes a very rare presentation of NPD-B in an infant who had suffered recurrent respiratory tract infections. Massive emphys

Lobar collapse: basic concepts.

Lobar collapse is important to diagnose when present, as it may indicate the presence of a central bronchial obstructing lesion. In some instances, its appearance is rather classical and easily diagnosed. In other instances, its appearance can challenge even the most experienced radiologist. In yet other instances, it may be simulated by other disease processes. This material represents a discussion of some basic concepts and signs the author considers important in determining whether or not lobar collapse is present.

Development of fetal rat lung during prolonged gestation.

Pregnancies were prolonged by daily subcutaneous injection of progesterone to the maternal rats from day 20 through 24 of gestation (Term is 22 days). The fetuses were harvested by cesarean section on gestation days (GD) 21 through 25. In spite of reduction in placental weight the fetal body weight increased during prolonged gestation. Both lung wet and dry weights decreased resulting in smaller lung per body weight. Compared to term fetuses, post term fetuses (GD 25) exhibited a 10% reduction in lung cell numbers, and a 90% reduction in lung glycogen. Lung disaturated phosphatidyl choline exp

Risk Factors of Postoperative Atelectasis and the Preventive Effect of a Risk-Stratified Nursing Model in Elderly Patients With Severe Polytrauma.

AIM: To investigate the incidence and independent risk factors for postoperative atelectasis in elderly patients with severe polytrauma, and to evaluate the preventive effect of a risk-stratified nursing model developed based on these factors. METHODS: This retrospective study comprised two components. The first component included 108 elderly patients with severe polytrauma who underwent surgery between March 2021 and March 2024. Based on postoperative atelectasis, patients were categorized into an atelectasis group (n = 31) and a non-atelectasis group (n = 77). Baseline characteristics, inju

Feasibility and characteristics of contrast-enhanced lung ultrasound in the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism in hospitalized patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Lung ultrasound (LUS) is a complementary tool in pulmonary embolism (PE) when computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) is delayed or contraindicated. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) enables real-time perfusion assessment and may help characterize subpleural consolidations. We aimed to describe the feasibility and findings of LUS/CEUS in hospitalized PE and to explore the association between enhancement patterns and atelectasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective single-center study (September-December 2025) including Internal Medicine inpatients with a final

Pulmonary computed tomography findings in patients with chronic aspiration detected by videofluoroscopic swallowing study.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate CT findings in patients with chronic aspiration compared with a control group without aspiration, as detected by the videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS). METHODS: This retrospective, observational study included patients with and without diagnoses of aspiration confirmed by VFSS, who underwent CT examination of the lungs between 2010 and 2014. Two radiologists blinded to the presence of aspiration reviewed the images to detect the presence of any abnormality. Consensus was reached with a third radiologist. CT pulmonary findings (bronchial thickening, bronchiole

Overview of Lung Ultrasound in Pediatric Cardiology.

Lung ultrasound (LUS) is increasing in its popularity for the diagnosis of pulmonary complications in acute pediatric care settings. Despite the high incidence of pulmonary complications for patients with pediatric cardiovascular and congenital heart disease, especially in children undergoing cardiac surgery, the use of LUS remains quite limited in these patients. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview and list of current potential applications for LUS in children with congenital heart disease, post-surgery. We herein describe protocols for LUS examinations in children,

Exuberant type 2 pneumocyte hyperplasia associated with spontaneous pneumothorax: secondary reactive change mimicking adenocarcinoma.

A wide variety of pulmonary and pleural histological changes is recognized in the setting of spontaneous pneumothorax. In this study, we describe a previously unreported lesion that was encountered in four males, 24-41 years of age. In addition to reactive eosinophilic pleuritis, subpleural emphysematous blebs, prominent eosinophilic exudate and lung atelectasis, the histology comprised exuberant type 2 pneumocyte hyperplasia, which was atypical enough to consider a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma in all four cases. Lung atelectasis and localized acute lung injury are factors likely responsible fo

CT features of rounded atelectasis.

Rounded atelectasis (folded lung syndrome) is a form of pulmonary collapse associated with pleural thickening that can mimic a neoplasm on plain chest radiographs. The abnormality was diagnosed radiologically in nine patients in whom follow-up varied from 1 to 6 years. Four patients had bilateral lesions, making a total of 13 examples. The CT findings were analyzed and compared with previously published criteria for the diagnosis of this disorder. In all cases, CT showed a rounded mass, 3.5-7.0 cm in diameter, abutting a thickened pleural surface in the lung periphery. The margin closest to th

Bronchoscopic treatment of pediatric atelectasis: A modified segmental insufflation-surfactant instillation technique.

BACKGROUND: Atelectasis is a condition characterized by the collapse and nonaeration of lung regions and is considered a manifestation of an underlying disease process. The goal of atelectasis treatment is the restoration of volume loss. In the range of different treatment options, chest physiotherapy is often used as a first-line approach, and some cases require bronchoscopic interventions. METHODS: In this case series, we describe a modified bronchoscopic treatment procedure using pressure-controlled bronchoscopic segmental insufflation with surfactant application. RESULTS: The proposed ap
