circMAPKBP1 functions as a miR-143-y sponge to regulate quail myoblast proliferation and differentiation.

The quail (Coturnix japonica) is an economically important poultry species and a useful avian model for muscle biology. Although circular RNA (circRNA)-miRNA competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks have been described in chicken and duck skeletal muscle, their roles in quail remain poorly defined. We identified circMAPKBP1, generated from the mitogen-activated protein kinase binding protein 1 (MAPKBP1), as highly expressed in quail skeletal muscle and myoblasts. Gain- and loss-of-function experiments in quail myoblast 7 (QM7) cells showed that circMAPKBP1 promotes proliferation while inhib

Morphological Assessment of Stage HH38 of the Japanese Quail (Coturnix japonica) Heart by Micro-Sonogram.

A challenge of studying mammalian cardiac embryogenesis is the limited ability to perform experimental manipulations in animal models. The avian embryo is widely accepted as a model for mammalian heart developmental studies. In this study, we establish the methodology and protocols for studying the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) heart at embryonic day 10 (HH38) using the FUJIFILM VisualSonics Vevo 3100 ultrasound system equipped with a MX550D small animal cardiology transducer. These protocols were designed to measure right ventricular wall thickness, pulmonary artery diameter, and the out

The potential effect of leptin co-administration on photodynamic damage using quail chorioallantoic membrane model.

BACKGROUND: The chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of the Japanese quail is an excellent model for studying photodynamic therapy (PDT) due to its rich vascularization. PDT is used not only in oncological treatment but also in infectious diseases, or psoriasis, where it yields significant advantages. This treatment also has its limitations, such as burning, itching, erythema, redness, swelling, and delayed wound healing. The aim of this study was to analyse the potentially protective properties of the tissue hormone leptin during PDT. METHODS: Japanese quail embryos incubated ex ovo were used in t

Morphological comparison of the chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar) and Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) syrinx.

Syrinx is a voice device and shows structural and functional differences between bird species. This study aimed to investigate morphological and histological structures of the syrinx in chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar) and Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). In the present study, 12 male chukar partridges and 12 male Japanese quail were used. The syrinx tissues were photographed by digital camera and fixed in formaldehyde solution. Five syrinxes were stained with methylene blue to make the syrinx rings distinct. After anatomical examination, tissues were passed through alcohol seri

Sex differences in alcohol dehydrogenase levels (ADH) and blood ethanol concentration (BEC) in Japanese quail.

Ethanol is one of the most widely used and abused drugs. Following ethanol consumption, ethanol enters the bloodstream from the small intestine where it gets distributed to peripheral tissues. In the bloodstream, ethanol is cleared from the system by the liver. The primary metabolism of ethanol uses alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). In mammals, females appear to have higher ADH activity in liver samples than males. The purpose of the first experiment was to analyze sex differences in ADH levels following 12 d of ethanol administration (i.e., water or 2 g/kg) in male and female quail. Following the

Effects of dietary Glycyrrhiza polysaccharide on growth, serum biochemistry, immunity, and egg laying in quail.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation with Glycyrrhiza polysaccharide (GCP) on growth performance, serum biochemistry, immunity, and egg laying in female quail. 300 1-day-old female quail were sorted into four dietary treatments with five replicate cages of 15 birds each. The basic diet in the four treatment groups was supplemented with 0, 500, 1000 and 1500 mg/kg GCP, and the experiment continued for 80 days. Results showed that dietary supplementation with GCP significantly (p < 0.05) increased average daily gain in a dose-dependent fashion, and decrease

Body growth, intestinal morphology and microflora of quail on diets supplemented with micronised wheat fibre.

1. Particle size reductions of fibre-rich materials alter structure, functional and digestive properties. To determine the effects of using fibre as an additive in Japanese quail rations on performance and gut physiology, a trial using micronised wheat fibre (MWF) at levels of 0.0, 5, 10 and 15 g/kg in feed was conducted. 2. Growth rate and feed efficiency were significantly improved when diets contained MWF while feed intake was not affected by levels of the fibre. As MWF content increased, the relative weight of gizzard and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) significantly increased whereas liver r

Specific neural phase relation of serotonin and dopamine modulate the testicular activity in Japanese quail.

Specific phase relation of serotonin and dopamine modulate the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-gonadal axis as well as photosexual responses in Japanese quail, but the effect of these specific phase relations on testicular activity and steroidogenesis is not yet been investigated. We hypothesized that temporal phase relation induced alteration in local testicular gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) and their receptor system may modulate the testicular activity and steroidogenesis through local (paracrine and autocrine) action. To validate this hypothesis, we ha

Evaluation of quail and turkey egg yolk for cryopreservation of Nili-Ravi buffalo bull semen.

Egg yolk is used as a cryoprotectant for semen in different mammalian species including buffalo. Egg yolk from different sources may affect freezability of buffalo bull semen. Quail egg yolk (QEY) and turkey egg yolk (TEY) in Tris-citric acid extender was evaluated for post-thaw quality and in vivo fertility rate of cryopreserved buffalo bull semen. Ejaculates were collected on weekly basis from six Nili-Ravi buffalo bulls (12 ejaculates/bull) for a period of 6 weeks and diluted at 37 °C with tris-citric egg yolk extender (50 × 106 motile spermatozoa mL-1) containing different levels of QEY or

Evidence of antibodies to spotted fever group rickettsiae in small mammals and quail from Mississippi.

Rickettsia parkeri is a recently recognized human pathogen primarily associated with the Gulf Coast tick Amblyomma maculatum, with immature stages of this tick reported from wild vertebrates. To better understand the role of vertebrates in the natural history of this bacterium, we evaluated small mammals and ground-dwelling birds for evidence of infection with R. parkeri or exposure to the organism. We sampled small mammals (n=39) and passerines (n=47) in both north-central and southeast Mississippi, while northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) samples (n=31) were obtained from farms in centr

[Lampbrush chromosomes of the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica): a new version of cytogenetic maps].

Avian oocyte chromosomes are transfomed into giant transcriptionally active lampbrush chromosomes (LBCs) at meiosis 1 diplotene. These chromosomes are a convenient tool for high-resulution cytogenetic analysis. Using differential staining with fluorochromes DAPI and CMA3, we have constructed detailed cytological maps for lampbrush macrochromosomes 1-5 and ZW of the Japanese quail Coturnix coturnix japonica. We also performed a comparative analysis ofmitotic chromosomes and LBCs corresponding to them. We estimated the decondensation coefficient during LBC formation and determined the centromere

Nuclear localization signals, DNA binding, and transactivation properties of quail Pax-6 (Pax-QNR) isoforms.

We reported previously the characterization of Pax-QNR/Pax-6 products expressed in the avian neuroretina. Five proteins (48, 46, 43, 33, and 32 kDa) were characterized, among which the 33 and 32 kDa proteins are devoid of the paired domain. In contrast to the 48-kDa (containing an alternative paired exon 4a) and 46-kDa proteins exclusively located in the nucleus, the 43- (in which the paired exon 5 is spliced out), 33-, and 32-kDa proteins were also found in the cytoplasmic compartment. We report the identification of two nuclear targeting sequences: the basic LKRKLQR region (amino acids 206-2

Development of the cardiac coronary vascular endothelium, studied with antiendothelial antibodies, in chicken-quail chimeras.

The endothelium of the coronary vascular system has been described in the literature as originating from different sources, varying from aortic endothelium for the main coronary stems, endocardium for the intramyocardial network, and sinus venosus lining for the venous part of the coronary system. Using an antibody against quail endothelial cells (alpha-MB1), we investigated the development of the coronary vascular system in the quail (Hamburger and Hamilton stages 15 to 35) and in a series of 36 quail-chicken chimeras. In the chimeras, pieces of quail epicardial primordium and/or liver tissue

Effect of 5-methoxyindoles on testicular function of the Indian jungle bush quail Perdicula asiatica.

Melatonin (aMT) implantation during testicular inactive phase (January-March) brought an early initiation of testicular development in Perdicula asiatica. However, during the recrudescence (March-May), active (April-June), and regressive (May-July-September) phases both aMT and 5-methoxytryptamine (MT) implantation had inhibited testicular weight and activity significantly. Subcutaneous injections of aMT, MT and 5-methoxytryptophol (ML) during morning (7.30 a.m.-8.00 a.m. and evening (4.30 p.m.-5.00 p.m.) could not bring about any significant effect on the weight or activity of the testes duri

Effects of 2-chloro-4-acetotoluidine (CAT) toxicity on biochemical and morphological alterations in quail.

Morphological changes in response to 2-chloro-4-acetotoluidine (CAT) toxicity in the quail appeared in the form of progressive necrosis of the kidney, particularly the proximal tubular epithelial cells. Changes at 32 hr after the CAT administration included vacuolar degeneration, dilatation of distal tubules containing hyaline and granular casts, overt necrosis, and deposition of urate casts in collecting tubules. There were no striking histopathological changes in the liver at 24 hr. However, small focal necrotic lesions were seen 32 hr after the CAT administration. A 40% protection against t

Transmission of an environmental modification in quails across three generations: changes in the contribution to phenotypic variability.

BACKGROUND: While epigenetic variations can contribute to shaping phenotypic diversity, it can be challenging to isolate and quantify the portion of trait variability under non-genetic influence. In this study we compared the phenotypic responses for different traits of two epilines of Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) across three generations, using a large sample size. These epilines were built in parallel following (epi +), or not (epi -), an initial genistein ingestion in the ancestors' diet and were maintained to harbour a similar genetic structure. RESULTS: Linear models were fitted t

Integrated pathways of T-2 toxin-induced neurotoxicity and protection by sodium butyrate in quails.

BACKGROUND: T-2 toxin, a prevalent mycotoxin in feed, poses severe health risks to poultry. While its systemic toxicity is recognized, its neurotoxic effects in birds, and effective countermeasures, remain underexplored. Sodium butyrate (NaB), a green feed additive, has shown broad biological benefits, but its potential to alleviate T-2-induced neurotoxicity is unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the neurotoxic mechanisms of T-2 toxin in quails and evaluate the protective role of sodium butyrate. METHODS: Two-hundred-and-forty 10-day-old quails were randomly assigned to Contr

Dietary glutamine modulates egg albumen and yolk composition in laying quails: effects of age.

This study evaluated the effects of dietary l-glutamine (Gln) supplementation on egg composition and amino acid profiles in laying Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). A total of 320 birds were assigned to four dietary treatments containing 0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, or 1.5% Gln for 12 wk. Eggs were collected at 12 and 19 wk of age, representing the early and late stages of the peak laying period, for analyses of yolk and albumen composition. Dietary Gln supplementation significantly affected the concentration of several amino acids in both yolk and albumen, although the response depended on bird age an

Production and immunogenicity of a plant-produced beak and feather disease virus vaccine in Japanese quails.

Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), a single-stranded DNA virus, infects endangered psittacine species, including the South African Cape parrot. The disease is highly contagious and can be transmitted through contact with contaminated faeces, crop secretions, and feather and skin dander. To date, there is no vaccine or cure available for BFDV. The production of an effective vaccine depends on having a production platform and methods that are both easy to use and capable of yielding a significant amount of protein that will induce a sufficient immune response. Therefore, the aim of this stud
