A simple and effective ratiometric fluorescence nanosensor for the selective detection of Cu(2+) has been developed by covalently connecting the carboxyl-modified red fluorescent cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) to the amino-functionalized blue fluorescent carbon nanodots (CDs). The sensor exhibits the dual-emissions peaked at 437 and 654 nm, under a single excitation wavelength of 340 nm. The red fluorescence can be selectively quenched by Cu(2+), while the blue fluorescence is a internal reference, resulting in a distinguishable fluorescence color change from pink to blue under a …

Highly fluorescent CdTe quantum dots (QDs) stabilized by 3-mercaptopropionic acid were prepared by an aqueous solution approach and used as a fluorescent label to link substance P (SP) in studying the interaction of SP with NK-1 receptor, which was expressed on the AR4-2J cell line. Nonspecific adsorptions of CdTe QDs on the AR4-2J cell membrane were observed, whereas the QD-SP conjugates successfully crossed the cell membrane and entered the cytosol. SP is a neurotransmitter, and neurotransmitter-induced calcium concentration oscillation is a common phenomenon in diverse cells especially of s…

Choosing the composition of a shell for QDs is not trivial, as both the band-edge energy offset and interfacial lattice mismatch influence the final optical properties. One way to balance these competing effects is by forming multishells and/or gradient-alloy shells. However, this introduces multiple interfaces, and their relative effects on quantum yield and blinking are not yet fully understood. Here, we undertake a systematic, comparative study of the addition of inner shells of a single component versus gradient-alloy shells of cadmium/zinc chalogenides onto CdSe cores, and then capping wi

We investigated the correlation between the thickness of the ZnS shell of CdSe-ZnS quantum dots (QDs), the stability of the particles, and the fluorescence quantum yield. As a measure for stability, a new shell quality test was developed. This test is based on the reaction of the QDs with photochemically formed thiophenol radicals and communicates an imperfect ZnS shell by a rapid and complete loss of fluorescence. The quantum yield increases from less than 5% for unshelled CdSe up to 50%, with an increase in ZnS shell thickness up to 0.6-0.8 nm. At the same time, the particles become signific…

Precise characterization of emitter-cavity metrics is required for developing novel cavity quantum electrodynamics platforms. For single solid-state quantum emitters, the Rabi coupling strength (g) and the homogeneous linewidth are the most challenging, the latter being often blurred by spectral diffusion. Recently, perovskite quantum dots emerged as promising quantum emitters, motivating their integration into photonic structures. We demonstrate the deterministic and reversible coupling of individual CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum dots to a tunable, high-quality factor, low mode volume open fiber…

A novel nanohybrid ratiometric fluorescence probe comprised of carbon dots (C-dots) and hydrophilic CdSe@ZnS quantum dots (QDs) has been developed by simply mixing the blue-emission C-dots with red-emission carboxylmethyldithiocarbamate modified CdSe@ZnS QDs (GDTC-QDs). The nanohybrid ratiometric fluorescence probe exhibits dual emissions at 436 nm and 629 nm under a single excitation wavelength. Due to the strong chelating ability of GDTC on the surface of QDs to mercuric ion (Hg(2+)), the fluorescence of the GDTC-QDs in the nanohybrid system could be selectively quenched in the presence of H…

The large deposits of unutilized coal in Nigeria present both environmental and economic challenges, including disposal issues and underutilization of a potentially valuable resource. A resource recovery approach, such as converting low-grade coal into high-value products, can offer a sustainable solution with industrial scalability and innovation in nanomaterial synthesis. In this study, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized via a one-step oxidation process using lignite coal from Enugu, Nigeria. Elemental analyses (EDX and XPS) confirmed that the CQDs consist of over 90% carbon, contai…

Understanding the relationship between the structural and optical properties of lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) requires precise control over their composition, size, surface passivation, and morphology. Although significant progress has been made in tuning the composition and size of perovskite QDs, less attention has been given to controlling their surface morphology, especially when the QDs are size-confined. Here, we present a synthesis of monodisperse, quantum-confined CsPbBr3 QDs with carefully controlled surface morphology. The exposure of surface facets is regulated by anneal…

The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria poses a severe global health threat, driving the urgent need for alternative antimicrobial strategies. Nanomaterials, particularly silicon quantum dots (SiQDs), offer promising potential due to their multimechanistic antibacterial action and lower risk of inducing resistance. However, the practical application of conventional SiQDs is often constrained by a limited antibacterial efficacy. In this work, chiral SiQDs (D-SiQDs and L-SiQDs) were synthesized via a one-step polymerization method using (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) and d- or l-cyste…

Cellulosic materials, which are widely utilized in daily life, are highly susceptible to fungal degradation. However, commercial fungicides are usually toxic, posing severe threats to human health and the environment, highlighting the necessity of developing eco-friendly antifungal agents for cellulosic materials. In this work, we synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) via a microwave-assisted method. CQDs with proper structure demonstrated significant antifungal effects against both brown-rot (Postia placenta, Pp) and white-decay fungi (Trametes versicolor, Tv) on various cellu…

Laser-assisted chemical synthesis has emerged as a promising toolkit for producing unconventional nanomaterials otherwise not readily accessible. However, it remains challenging for the high-precision laser-assisted photoetching of colloidal quantum dots (QDs). Here, we report a laser-assisted atom-by-atom photoetching process that post-synthetically enables the state-of-the-art colloidal CdSe QDs. By deciphering the surface chemistry and ultrafast excitonic dynamics, we provide an atomic-level activation-coordination coupling mechanism in such exciton-involved photochemical reactions. In situ…

Pioneering approaches for precise tumor removal involve fluorescence-guided surgery, while challenges persist, including the low fluorescence contrast observed at tumor boundaries and the potential for excessive damage to normal tissue at the edges. Lead/cadmium sulfide quantum dots (PbS@CdS QDs), boasting high quantum yields (QYs) and vivid fluorescence, have facilitated advancements in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 900-1700 nm). However, during fluorescent surgical navigation operations, hydrophilic coatings of these inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) guarantee biosafety; it also comes…

PbTe is a semiconductor with promising properties for topological quantum computing applications. Here, we characterize electron quantum dots in PbTe nanowires selectively grown on InP. Charge stability diagrams at zero magnetic field reveal large even-odd spacing between Coulomb blockade peaks, charging energies below 140 μeV and Kondo peaks in odd Coulomb diamonds. We attribute the large even-odd spacing to the large dielectric constant and small effective electron mass of PbTe. By studying the Zeeman-induced level and Kondo splitting in finite magnetic fields, we extract the electron g-fact…

Combining molecular imprinted polymers and water-soluble manganese-doped zinc sulfide quantum dots (Mn2+: ZnS QDs), a new molecule imprinted polymers-based fluorescence sensor was designed. The molecule imprinted quantum dots (MIP@QDs) were constructed by coating molecular imprinted polymers layer on the surface of ZnS: Mn2+ QDs using the surface molecular imprinting technology. The developed MIP@QDs-based sensor was used for rapid and selective fluorescence sensing of sulfanilamide in water samples. The binding experiments showed that the MIP@QDs has rapid fluorescent responses, which are hig…

Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor nanoparticles (1-10 nm) with excellent optical and electrical properties. As QDs show great promise for applications in fields such as biomedicine, their biosafety is widely emphasized. Therefore, studies on the potential 'nanotoxicity' of QDs in genetic material are warranted. This review summarizes and discusses recent reports derived from different cell lines or animal models concerning the effects of QDs on genetic material. QDs could induce many types of genetic material damage, which subsequently triggers a series of cellular adverse outcomes, includi…

Quantum dots (QDs) have attracted much attention over the past decades due to their outstanding properties. However, obtaining QDs with excellent photoluminescence and quantum yields (QYs) from their aqueous synthesis is still a big concern. We herein present a green and facile synthesis of AgInS (AIS) QDs and AgInS-ZnS (AIS-ZnS) core-shell QDs using a combination of two capping agents (glutathione and sodium citrate). The temporal evolution of the optical properties is investigated by varying the reaction time and pH of the solution. The results show that the fluorescence intensity of the QDs…

Inducing apoptosis in cancer cells is considered a potential therapeutic mechanism underlying cancers. Here, chiral folic acid (FA) conjugated Cys-CdTe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) conjugated with a cancer-targeting ligand were fabricated to induce apoptosis in vivo. Ligand-induced chirality mechanism for FA-Cys-CdTe/CdS QDs was discussed, which is verified by density functional theory (DFT) simulation. Interestingly, we found that the circular dichroism (CD) signals of chiral QDs can effectively distinguish breast cancer cells from normal cells, where a sharp decrease in CD signal and absorption in…

A highly sensitive immunosensor using streptavidin-conjugated quantum dots (QDs/SA) was developed to detect dengue biomarker of non-structural protein 1 (NS1) at very low concentration, so that it can probe dengue infection even in the early stage. The QDs/SA were first bound to biotinylated NS1 antibody (Ab) and the QDs/SA-Ab conjugates were then used to detect the NS1 antigen (Ag) in the Ag concentration range of 1 pM to 120 nM. The formation of QDs/SA-Ab and QDs/SA-Ab-Ag conjugates was confirmed by the measurements of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FF-SEM), field emission tran…

The interaction of a presynthesized orange emitting Mn2+ -doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) with L-Cysteine (L-Cys) led to enhance emission intensity (at 596 nm) and quantum yield (QY). Importantly, the Mn2+ -doped ZnS QDs exhibited high sensitivity towards L-Cys, with a limit of detection of 0.4±0.02 μM (in the linear range of 3.3-13.3 μM) and high selectivity in presence of interfering amino acids and metal ions. The association constant of L-Cys was determined to be 0.36×105 M-1 . The amplified passivation of the surface of Mn2+ -doped ZnS QDs following the incorporation and binding of L-Cys is…
