Childhood exposure to ultraviolet radiation and harmful skin effects: epidemiological evidence.

We review the general amount and patterns of exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation that children and teenagers experience and the spectrum of UV-related skin damage that can occur as a result. Data about the amount of solar UV received by children and teenagers are relatively few but suggest that around 40-50% of total UV to age 60 occurs before age 20. Among white children, those with the palest complexions suffer the most damage. Comparisons of prevalence and incidence of outcomes in children and teenagers sharing common ancestry, but living at different latitudes, show that prevalenc

Biological effects of low-dose ionizing radiation exposure on interventional cardiologists.

BACKGROUND: Interventional cardiologists (ICs) are likely to receive high radiation exposure as a result of procedures they undertake. AIMS: To assess the effects of low-dose X-ray radiation exposure on chromosomal damage and on selected indices of cellular and humoral immunity in ICs. METHODS: The study population consisted of 37 ICs and 37 clinical physicians as the control group with similar age, sex and duration of employment, without any work-related exposure to ionizing radiation. Cytogenetic studies were performed by chromosome aberration analysis and immunological studies by flow cyt

Effects of ionizing radiation on cellular structures, induced instability and carcinogenesis.

Ionizing radiation is perhaps the most extensively studied human carcinogen. There have been a number of epidemiological studies on human populations exposed to radiation for medical or occupational reasons, as a result of protracted environmental exposures due to radiation accidents, or after atomic bombings. As a result of these studies exposure to ionizing radiation has been unambiguously linked to cancer causation. While cancer induction is the primary concern and the most important somatic effect of exposure to ionizing radiation, potential health risks do not only involve neoplastic dise

Detection of radiation effects in polymer gel dosimeters using 129Xe NMR.

Polymer gel dosimeters consist of monomers, with or without cross-linking agents, dispersed in a gel. Upon exposure to ionizing radiation, polymerization proceeds within the gel matrix, thereby changing several measurable physical properties that can then be related quantitatively to absorbed dose. Several previous studies have examined how various nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) properties, such as the relaxation rates of water protons, change with dose, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been used successfully to measure three-dimensional dose distributions in irradiated polymer gels.

Genomic instability and bystander effects: a paradigm shift in radiation biology?

A basic paradigm in radiobiology is that, following exposure to ionizing radiation, the deposition of energy in the cell nucleus and the resulting damage to DNA, the principal target, are responsible for the radiation's deleterious biological effects. Findings in two rapidly expanding fields of research--radiation-induced genomic instability and bystander effects--have caused us to reevaluate these central tenets. In this article, the potential influence of induced genomic instability and bystander effects on cellular injury after exposure to low-level radiation will be reviewed.

Evaluation of polysaccharopeptide effects against C6 glioma in combination with radiation.

Long-term control of high-grade brain tumors is rarely achieved with current therapeutic regimens. The major goal of this study was to determine whether polysaccharopeptide (PSP), a crude polysaccharide peptide extract derived from Coriolus versicolor, a fungus, could enhance the effects of radiation against glioma cells in culture and in xenografted tumors in vivo. PSP significantly augmented radiation-induced damage to C6 rat glioma cells in vitro. Nude mice injected subcutaneously with the C6 cells were treated with PSP (injected intraperitoneally at 2 mg/injection) and radiation (2 Gy/frac

Effects of ultraviolet C radiation on cellular proliferation in p53-/- keratinocytes.

Skin cancer is the most common tumor type in Caucasians, with an incidence that approaches the lifetime risk for all other cancer subtypes combined. The most common predisposing factor is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation present in sunlight. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of UVC on the proliferation of a p53-/- human keratinocyte cell line, HaCaT, and how UVC alters the response of these cells to transforming growth factors (TGF)-alpha and TGF-beta1. UVC treatment during G0/G1 phase resulted in decreased incorporation of [3H]thymidine, an effect that was en

Cytogenetic effects of space radiation in lymphocytes of MIR-18 crews.

For assessing health risk, the measurement of physical dose received during a space mission, as well as the LETs, energies and charges of particles is important. It is also important to obtain quantitative information regarding the effectiveness of space radiation in causing damage to critical biological targets, e.g., chromosomes, since at present the estimated uncertainty of biological effects of space radiation is more than a factor of two. Such large uncertainty makes accurate health risk assessment very difficult. For this very reason, a study on cytogenetic effects of space radiation in

Therapeutic effects of transplantation of lyophilized and radiation-sterilized, allogeneic bone.

Lyophilized radiation-sterilized bone graft operations were analyzed according to 27 variables in 1014 patients with two-year follow-up results. In 91.3% of patients, the result of treatment was "very good" (full-health restoration) or "satisfactory" (restoration with some small disorders). In 5.1%, the results were unsatisfactory. There was no clear association between the results of treatment and the patient's age. A definite correlation was found in preoperative diagnosis and end results. Better results were achieved in benign tumors and congenital malformations than in post-traumatic and d

Cumulative effects of ultraviolet radiation on the skin: cancer and photoaging.

The cumulative effects of solar exposure are skin cancer and photoaging. This relationship has been established by epidemiological, clinical, and pathological investigation. Understanding of the mechanisms of skin cancer and photoaging requires the study of model systems. For example, the study of cancerprone xeroderma pigmentosum patients has indicated that effective DNA repair is a major defence mechanism against skin cancer. However, there are few human models. The hairless albino mouse has been shown to be a good model for both photocarcinogenesis by ultraviolet radiation (UVR) alone and U

Effects of calmodulin antagonists on radiation-induced lipid peroxidation in microsomes.

Rat liver microsomes were irradiated with gamma-rays at a dose rate of 1.31 Gys-1. The extent of lipid peroxidation, measured in terms of malondialdehyde (MDA) formed, increased with radiation dose. The presence of calmodulin antagonists during irradiation decreased lipid peroxidation. The order of their protective efficiency was: chlorpromazine (CPZ) greater than promethazine (PMZ) greater than trimeprazine (TMZ). Their protective effect was diminished in the presence of ferrous (Fe2+) ions and was restored on addition of EDTA. However, calmodulin antagonists considerably inhibited radiation-

Interactions of different wavelengths in effects of UV radiation on skin.

Literature data on photoaddition, photorecovery and photoaugmentation are discussed. The practical conclusion is that for estimates of the main risks of ultraviolet radiation to human skin, sunburn and skin cancer, any deviations from photoaddition are small. Risk estimates may be made on the basis of addition, and the errors possibly made by doing so are small compared to other uncertainties in such calculations. Deviations from photoaddition reported are interesting from the viewpoint of studying mechanisms. Apparent controversies cannot be resolved on the basis of presently available data.

The biological effects of radiofrequency radiation: a critical review and recommendations.

Exposure of the general public and in particular certain occupational groups to radiofrequency radiation (RFR) is ubiquitous and of growing concern. No clear and widely accepted understanding of the biological effects and health implications of such RFR exposure has emerged. This paper reviews the data available, including reports of RFR effects on single cells or cell components, on genetic composition or development, on developed organs, tissues, or cell systems, and on integrative and regulatory biological systems. Reports of RFR effects on the immunological system, with consideration of th

In vivo effects of psoralens plus longwave ultraviolet radiation on immunity.

Treatment with 8-methoxypsoralen plus UV radiation at 320-400 nm (PUVA) alters immune function in experimental animals and humans. In guinea pigs, the treatment can suppress the development of delayed hypersensitivity to an injected antigen and the development of contact hypersensitivity locally at the site of exposure to radiation and systemically at a nonexposed site. The mechanisms of these changes are unknown but may involve certain alterations that occur after treatment in Langerhans cells. In normal human subjects, PUVA treatment can alter the distribution of circulating T- and B-lymphoc

Adrenoreceptor development in rat cerebrum and the effects of ionizing radiation.

Previous studies in the rat have shown that neonatal radiation alters certain aspects of CNS monoaminergic systems including altering cerebral norepinephrine levels [17]. To determine if cerebral adrenoreceptor development is also altered by neonatal ionizing radiation, a single dose of whole body gamma-radiation was administered to rats on postnatal day two. This treatment did not alter (3H)-dihydroalprenolol (beta adrenoreceptor) or (3H)-WB4101 (alpha1 adrenoreceptor) binding when cerebra from irradiated animals were compared to age-matched sham-irradiated controls on postnatal days 9, 15 an

The acute effects of long-wave ultraviolet radiation on human skin.

The erythematogenic and melanogenic properties of polychromatic long-wave ultraviolet light (UV-A) has been re-examined. Redness appeared immediately after exposure and persisted for 24 hr with doses of about 50 Joules/cm2. With threshold erythemal doses, about 13 J/cm2, the redness faded after a few minutes. The response was not biphasic. Pigmentation also appeared immediately after exposure and faded rapidly with threshold doses of 4 J/cm2. With larger doses (18 J/cm2) immediate pigmentation gave way without fading to delayed pigmentation (true melanogenesis). Thus, the acute effects of UV-A

Effects of ionizing radiation on incisor development of the prenatal mouse.

The effects of 100 rad of X-irradiation of incisor development in CD1 mice were studied. 24 pregnant mice were irradiated on the 12th day post coitum and sacrificed from the 14th through the 20th gestational days. The 191 irradiated fetuses were smaller than those not irradiated, their crania and necks were malformed and their lower extremities were poorly developed. The developing incisors of the irradiated animals were retarded, the pulpal vessels were enlarged and the vessels walls did not maintain their structural integrity. The cells of the future pulp were necrotic, and the basement memb
