Topical use of olive oil preparation to prevent radiodermatitis: results of a prospective study in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients.

BACKGROUND: Radiodermatitis is a common side effect of radiotherapy. However, an effective method for the prevention of radiodermatitis has not yet been identified. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of topical olive oil in the prevention of acute radiodermatitis in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) who were undergoing concurrent chemoradiotherapy. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in patients with NPC. The patients were randomized into the intervention (n = 47) and control (n = 47) groups. Patients in the control group were treated with a general …

Topical use of a silymarin-based preparation to prevent radiodermatitis : results of a prospective study in breast cancer patients.

PURPOSE: More than 80% of patients with breast cancer undergoing postsurgical radiotherapy (RT) will develop radiodermatitis and approximately 10% of these patients show grade 3 lesions. Side effects may reduce the patient's compliance and can be limiting factors to follow RT protocols. Therefore, there is a high need for more effective prophylactic treatments. In this study, a silymarin-based cream (Leviaderm(®)) was tested in comparison to our standard of care (SOC) at the involved site. METHODS: A total of 101 patients were evaluated after breast-conserving surgery followed by RT with 50.4…

Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy for severe acute radiodermatitis in patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Acute radiodermatitis (ARD) is a frequent and debilitating inflammatory toxicity in patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy (RT). In severe cases, ARD may progress to moist desquamation, with the potential for ulceration. Colonization or infection with Staphylococcus aureus is a critical independent risk factor for worsening ARD. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has emerged as a promising adjunctive therapeutic approach, with potential to reduce microbial burden, modulate inflammation, and accelerate tissue repair. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical effects…

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA IN THE AREA OF CHRONIC RADIODERMATITIS - 3 CASE REPORTS WITH LONG-TERM FOLLOW-UP.

Chronic radiodermatitis is a delayed response of skin and underlying soft tissues after exposure to the ionizing radiation. It bears a risk of secondary tumors, in particular non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). We present 3 case reports of the patients with the development of BCC's ≥40 years after radiation of either childhood hemangioma or basal cell carcinoma. Patients with chronic radiodermatitis need a life-long dermatologic follow-up for early detection of NMSC and its consequent removal by Mohs surgery.

Comparison of the efficacy among different interventions for radiodermatitis: A Bayesian network meta‑analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Radiation dermatitis (RD) is a prevalent and difficult-to-manage consequence of radiation therapy (RT). A variety of interventions have been proven effective in preventing and treating RD. However, the optimal approach remains unclear. This network meta-analysis (NMA) conducted a comparison and ranking of the effectiveness and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) of the interventions currently utilized in RD. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched to identify pertinent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) focused on the prevention and treatment of R

A Rare Case of BRAF-mutated Metastatic Pleomorphic Xanthoastrocytoma Patient who Developed Radiodermatitis After Receiving Anti-BRAF Treatment.

Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) is a rare type of grade 2 or 3 brain tumor that usually occurs in children and young adults. The standard treatment for PXA is maximally safe resection, usually with adjuvant radiation therapy, for high-grade tumors. BRAF V600E mutation is one of the most common molecular alterations in these tumors, with nearly 70% of cases carrying this mutation. Although BRAF inhibitors have shown promise in treating progressive or refractory disease, their use has been associated with various adverse effects, including radiodermatitis, which is a relatively common compli…
