Congenital entropion and congenital corneal ulcer.

PURPOSE: We studied a case of corneal ulceration in utero from lower eyelid entropion. METHODS: A 3-week-old male infant was referred for examination of a left corneal ulcer that was present at birth and unresponsive to antibiotics. RESULTS: Examination disclosed a lower eyelid entropion that was treated surgically by a nonincisional method, leaving a central leukoma after re-epithelialization. CONCLUSION: Congenital lower eyelid entropion should be included in the differential diagnosis of congenital corneal opacities.

Pyoderma Gangrenosum Post Reduction Mammoplasty: An Unusual Postoperative Complication.

We present a case of a patient with pyoderma gangrenosum, a rare complication associated with surgical procedures. Breast reduction is the second most common etiology within this category. This case emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis to start therapy on time to stop the inflammatory process and prevent its progression, achieving adequate re-epithelialization, as well as emphasizes the use of an immunomodulator with steroid treatment to offer better results that impact the quality of life positively.

Beyond Early Excision and Grafting: A Perspective on Tissue-Preserving and Regenerative Topical Burn Wound Care.

Whilst early debridement and autologous skin grafting remain the cornerstones of treatment for deep burns, there has been a shift towards a more selective and regenerative medicine-oriented approach in the topical management of burn wounds. The most critical issue is whether the wound can achieve epithelialization within approximately 2 to 3 weeks. This timeframe is of clinical significance due to the strong association between delayed epithelialization and hypertrophic scarring, which can result in contractures and functional impairment. However, given that the likelihood of epithelialization

Understanding the science of electrospinning for the fabrication of biofiber scaffolds as advanced wound dressings in excisional wound healing.

An excisional wound is characterised as a complete loss of tissue from its site and involves a complex healing process. Conventional wound dressings present significant clinical challenges, including delayed re-epithelialization, an increased risk of infection, and excessive scarring. Electrospun biopolymer/nanofiber scaffolds developed by electrospinning have emerged as a promising class of advanced wound dressings with a unique extracellular matrix (ECM)- mimicking nanofibrous architecture, high porosity, and tunable physicochemical properties. The activity of electrospun nanofibres depends …

Lithium chloride promotes mesenchymal-epithelial transition in murine cutaneous wound healing via inhibiting CXCL9 and IGF2.

Cutaneous wound healing is a challenge in plastic and reconstructive surgery. In theory, cells undergoing mesenchymal transition will achieve re-epithelialization through mesenchymal-epithelial transition at the end of wound healing. But in fact, some pathological stimuli will inhibit this biological process and result in scar formation. If mesenchymal-epithelial transition can be activated at the corresponding stage, the ideal wound healing may be accomplished. Two in vivo skin defect mouse models and dermal-derived mesenchymal cells were used to evaluate the effect of lithium chloride in wou…

CO2 fractional laser-assisted transdermal delivery of silk nanofiber carriers in a rabbit ear hypertrophic scar model.

BACKGROUND: Hypertrophic scars are skin fibrotic diseases, characterized by fibroblast hyperproliferation and excessive accumulation of extr … , both R6G and R110 were abundant in the CZ and remained stable on days 1, 3 and 5. Moreover, rapid re-epithelialization hindered the long-term permeability of both drugs. CONCLUSION: Combining CO2 fractional laser irradiation with SNF drug delivery could improve the efficiency of hydrophilic drug delivery within 24 h before total re-epithelialization.

Procollagen C-proteinase enhancer 1 (PCPE-1) functions as an anti-angiogenic factor and enhances epithelial recovery in injured cornea.

Procollagen C-proteinase enhancer 1 (PCPE-1) has been characterized as a protein capable of enhancing the activity of bone morphogenetic pro … s of PCPE-1. Another unexpected finding was of abnormalities of epithelial basement membrane and of re-epithelialization following Pcolce -/- corneal injury. Thus, PCPE-1 appears to be of importance as an anti-angiogenic factor and in re-epithelialization following injury in cornea and perhaps in other tissues as well.

Total particulate matter and wound healing: an in vivo study with histological insights.

OBJECTIVES: Wound healing in the skin is a multifarious orchestration of cellular processes and cigarette smoking may be a cause for delayed wound healing. The aim of this study was to investigate the plausible association between exposures of cigarette total particulate matter (TPM) and wound healing. METHODS: An in vivo wound healing model of mice was established for determination of assorted events of wound healing, dermal matrix regeneration, re-epithelialization, and neovascularization. A total of 72 adult mice, separated in eight groups, were exposed to TPM for 12 days. RESULTS: A high…

Mechanism of healing following the Snodgrass repair.

PURPOSE: It has been suggested that healing after tubularized incised plate urethroplasty occurs through re-epithelialization with normal tissue ingrowth or by secondary intent through scarring. We investigated healing in tubularized incised plate urethroplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Hypospadias was created in 5 dogs by incising the ventral urethra, allowed to heal for 21 days and subsequently repaired. During hypospadias creation a tattoo was made longitudinally in the midline dorsal urethral plate. The tattoo was bisected during repair, thus creating 2 distinct lines marking the edges of t…

Denervation Affected Skin Wound Healing in a Modified Rat Model.

Introduction: Lacking of normal innervation increases the chance of chronic wounds and recurrence of ulceration. Various rodent models are designed to reveal nerve-wound relationship but present many limitations to mimic human wound which heals primarily by re-epithelialization rather than contraction in rodents. This article tested a modified rat model of denervated wound healing to better mimic clinical common denervated wounds. Material and Methods: The wounds formed on right hind paws of 18 SD rats served as the experimental (denervated) group and the left side as contra-lateral control (n…
