[The characteristics of the startle reflex to an acoustic stimulus in rats with hereditary stress-sensitive arterial hypertension: the effect of chronic stress in the prepuberty period].

Acoustic startle reflex was studied in young and adult rats with hereditary stress-induced arterial hypertension (HSIAH) in comparison with original normotensive Wistar strain. Immediate and long-lasting effects of chronic handling or chronic unpredictable stress at the age of 4 and 5 weeks on manifestations of the startle reflex were studied. The amplitude of the sensorimotor reaction was lower in both young (38-day-old) and adult (4-month-old) HSIAH rats than in age-matched normotensive Wistar rats. Young and adult hypertensives demonstrated significant inhibition of startle reflex when the

The relationship between the uncomfortable loudness level and the acoustic reflex threshold for pure tones in normally-hearing and impaired listeners--a meta-analysis.

The objective of this study was to determine the potential of the acoustic reflex threshold (ART) as a predictor of the uncomfortable level (ULL) and to identify related areas for investigations in the future. Eleven studies reporting data from 141 normally-hearing and 240 impaired hearing subjects have been reviewed, focusing on methods, test conditions and subjects. Results and conclusions are discussed and new calculations have been performed on the reported data. The median difference between ART and ULL across studies and frequencies was 5 dB both in normally-hearing and impaired subjects

Frequency and level dependence of the middle ear acoustic reflex and its decay measured in wideband absorbance with contralateral narrowband noise elicitors.

The acoustic reflex has potential as a diagnostic tool for identifying individuals with selective damage to cochlear sensory neurons (Bramhall et al., 2022; Feeney et al., 2023; Wojtczak et al., 2017). If damage to neurons is localized, then using broadband stimuli to elicit the reflex, as reported in the studies cited above, may not be most effective in revealing spatially restricted lesions. We have measured changes in absorbance with chirps delivered to one ear and contralateral narrowband noise to elicit the reflex. We aim to characterize the frequency and level dependence of changes in ab

Earplug-induced changes in acoustic reflex thresholds suggest that increased subcortical neural gain may be necessary but not sufficient for the occurrence of tinnitus.

The occurrence of tinnitus is associated with hearing loss and neuroplastic changes in the brain, but disentangling correlation and causation has remained difficult in both human and animal studies. Here we use earplugs to cause a period of monaural deprivation to induce a temporary, fully reversible tinnitus sensation, to test whether differences in subcortical changes in neural response gain, as reflected through changes in acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs), could explain the occurrence of tinnitus. Forty-four subjects with normal hearing wore an earplug in one ear for either 4 (n = 27) or 7

Improved assessment of sensorimotor gating in animal models relevant to ASD: A data modelling approach to quantify PrePulse Inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex.

BACKGROUND: The PrePulse Inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle reflex is a neurobehavioral test frequently used in neurodevelopmental studies. Most PPI studies have used rodent models of schizophrenia; however, the currently used data analysis method does not take into account the variability present in autistic preclinical models. NEW METHOD: We propose a new data modelling approach for PPI data obtained from animals exposed to valproic acid or endocrine disruptors, using mixed modeling; and a new calculation of inhibition of the acoustic startle, which takes into account the habituation

Using acoustic reflex threshold, auditory brainstem response and loudness judgments to investigate changes in neural gain following acute unilateral deprivation in normal hearing adults.

Unilateral auditory deprivation induces a reduction in the acoustic reflex threshold (ART) and an increase in loudness. These findings have been interpreted as a compensatory change in neural gain, governed by changes in excitatory and inhibitory neural inputs. There is also evidence to suggest that changes in neural gain can be measured using the auditory brainstem response (ABR). The present study extended Munro et al. (2014) [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 135, 315-322] by investigating changes after 4 days of unilateral earplug use to: (i) ART, (ii) ABR and (iii) loudness. Because changes may occur d

Age- and sex-specific effects of maternal separation on the acoustic startle reflex in rats: early baseline enhancement in females and blunted response to ambiguous threat.

Early life adversity (ELA) increases the incidence of later-life anxiety disorders. Dysregulated threat processing, including responsivity to ambiguous threats, is an indicator of anxiety disorders and can be influenced by childhood experiences. The acoustic startle response is a defensive reflex displayed by mammals when exposed to sudden intense stimuli reflecting individual variations in vigilance. These measures can be altered by previous experience and experimental modifications, including the introduction of unconditioned aversive stimuli. Rats emit ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in the

Alterations in brainstem auditory processing, the acoustic startle response and sensorimotor gating of startle in Wistar audiogenic rats (WAR), an animal model of reflex epilepsies.

While acute audiogenic seizures in response to acoustic stimulus appear as an alteration in sensory-motor processing in the brainstem, the repetition of the stimulus leads to the spread of epileptic activity to limbic structures. Here, we investigated whether animals of the Wistar Audiogenic Rat (WAR) strain, genetically selected by inbreeding for seizure susceptibility, would have alterations in their auditory response, assessed by the auditory brainstem responses (ABR) and sensory-motor gating, measured as pre-pulse inhibition (PPI), which could be related to their audiogenic seizures suscep

Prolonged Exposure of CBA/Ca Mice to Moderately Loud Noise Can Cause Cochlear Synaptopathy but Not Tinnitus or Hyperacusis as Assessed With the Acoustic Startle Reflex.

Hearing loss changes the auditory brain, sometimes maladaptively. When deprived of cochlear input, central auditory neurons become more active spontaneously and begin to respond more strongly and synchronously to better preserved sound frequencies. This spontaneous and sound-evoked central hyperactivity has been postulated to trigger tinnitus and hyperacusis, respectively. Localized hyperactivity has also been observed after long-term exposure to noise levels that do not damage the cochlea. Adult animals exposed to bands of nondamaging noise exhibited suppressed spontaneous and sound-evoked ac

Life-Course Contribution of Prenatal Stress in Regulating the Neural Modulation Network Underlying the Prepulse Inhibition of the Acoustic Startle Reflex in Male Alzheimer's Disease Mice.

The prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle reflex (ASR), as an index of sensorimotor gating, is one of the most extensively used paradigms in the field of neuropsychiatric disorders. Few studies have examined how prenatal stress (PS) regulates the sensorimotor gating during the lifespan and how PS modifies the development of amyloid-beta (Aβ) pathology in brain areas underlying the PPI formation. We followed alternations in corticosterone levels, learning and memory, and the PPI of the ASR measures in APPNL-G-F/NL-G-F offspring of dams exposed to gestational noise stress. In-depth q

Prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex impairment by 5-HT2A receptor activation in the inferior colliculus is prevented by GABAA receptor blockade in the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus.

The relationship between serotonin dysfunction and schizophrenia commenced with the discovery of the effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) that has high affinity for 5-HT2A receptors. Activation of these receptors produces perceptual and behavioural changes such as illusions, visual hallucinations and locomotor hyperactivity. Using prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle, which is impaired in schizophrenia,we aimed to investigate:i) the existence of a direct and potentially inhibitory neural pathway between the inferior colliculus (IC) and the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus

Acoustic Reflexes in Normal-Hearing Adults, Typically Developing Children, and Children with Suspected Auditory Processing Disorder: Thresholds, Real-Ear Corrections, and the Role of Static Compliance on Estimates.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested elevated reflex thresholds in children with auditory processing disorders (APDs). However, some aspects of the child's ear such as ear canal volume and static compliance of the middle ear could possibly affect the measurements of reflex thresholds and thus impact its interpretation. Sound levels used to elicit reflexes in a child's ear may be higher than predicted by calibration in a standard 2-cc coupler, and lower static compliance could make visualization of very small changes in impedance at threshold difficult. For this purpose, it is important

Cytotoxic lesion of the medial prefrontal cortex abolishes the partial reinforcement extinction effect, attenuates prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex and induces transient hyperlocomotion, while sparing spontaneous object recognition memory in the rat.

The partial reinforcement extinction effect refers to the increase in resistance to extinction of an operant response acquired under partial reinforcement relative to that acquired under continuous reinforcement. Prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response refers to the reduction in startle reactivity towards an intense acoustic pulse stimulus when it is shortly preceded by a weak prepulse stimulus. These two behavioural phenomena appear to be related to different forms of attentional processes. While the prepulse inhibition effect reflects an inherent early attentional gating mechani

Impedance audiometry in a young population. The effect of age, sex, and tympanogram abnormalities.

Static compliance, and acoustic reflex thresholds, were studied retrospectively in 883 subjects, aged one to 20 years. Age was a factor in both measurements. In 523 subjects with normal middle ear fuction, static compliance increased as a function of age. Acoustic reflex thresholds for pure tone signals improved with age, while acoustic reflex thresholds for broad band noise (BBN) tended to decrease. Minor tympanogram abnormalities exerted a distinct influence on static compliance and acoustic reflex thresholds. Static compliance was increased, and highly variable, in 93 subjects with A-deep t

Middle ear muscle reflex measurement in neonates: comparison between 1000Hz and 226Hz probe tones.

INTRODUCTION: Middle ear muscle reflex (MEMR) evaluation assists in diagnosing hearing problems because normal responses depend on preconditions of a healthy auditory system. Studies in neonates recording the acoustic reflex with 226Hz probes have described high rates of absence. Other studies using a high frequency probe have found higher rates of presence in normal neonates. However, few studies have compared results between low and high frequency probes in the same newborns. OBJECTIVE: To comparatively assess the ipsilateral acoustic reflex recorded by 226Hz and 1000Hz probes in newborns.

The noise protection effect of the stapedius reflex.

The purpose was to estimate the attenuation and protection effect of the acoustic stapedius reflex on the inner ear. The acoustic stapedius reflex was recorded by means of extratympanic manometry (ETM). This method was used, as it is able to differ between the stapedius and the tensor reflex. Patients with unilateral Bell's palsy were investigated during palsy time and after recovery. The amplitude of the contralateral acoustic stapedius reflex was used as a relative measure of the excitation of the cochlea on the affected side. The attenuation effect, 20 dB above the reflex threshold, was app

Reflex threshold shift in chinchillas following a prolonged exposure to noise.

The acoustic reflex is considered to reduce transmission across the middle ear and thereby protect the inner ear from intense sounds. The dynamic properties of this reflex seem to be a function of the duration of the eliciting stimulus. Assessment of the protective action afforded by middle-ear muscle contractions for long-term noise exposures requires the knowledge of how these dynamic properties change under such conditions. Round window electrodes were implanted in eight chinchillas. Changes in the threshold of the acoustic reflex were measured during an eight-hour exposure at 95 dB SPL to

Audiotympanometric findings in myasthenia gravis.

Myasthenia gravis can be a difficult diagnostic and therapeutic problem. Our study on six patients consisted of pure-tone audiograms, tympanometry, and acoustic reflex tests. Positive findings in the myasthenia gravis patients prior to medication included hyperacusis and increase in the intensity of sound required to elicit an acoustic reflex. Following medication, the hyperacusis lessened and the intensity of sound required to elicit the acoustic reflex decreased. During follow-up of two of the patients we encountered cholinergic (overdosage) crisis in one patient and myasthenic (underdosage)

Toluene effect on the olivocochlear reflex.

Animal studies have shown that toluene can cause hearing loss and can exacerbate the effects of noise by inhibiting the middle ear acoustic reflex. In this investigation, carried out in Long-Evans rats, the tensor tympani tendon was cutoff and the stapedius muscle was electrocoagulated in one or both middle ears. Rat hearing was evaluated by measuring cubic distortion otoacoustic emissions (2f1-f2; f1 = 8000 Hz; f2 = 9600 Hz; f1/f2 = 1.2) prior to, during, and after activation of the olivocochlear (OC) reflex. A band noise centered at 4 kHz was used as suppressor noise. It was delivered contra
