The role of D2 dopamine receptors in oxytocin induced place preference and anxiolytic effect.

Neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) is involved in the regulation of social and non-social behaviour. The central nucleus of amygdala (CeA), part of the limbic system, plays an important role in learning, memory, anxiety and reinforcing mechanisms. CeA has been shown to be rich in OT receptors in rodents. Our previous findings indicated that OT in the rat CeA has a dose dependent rewarding and anxiolytic effect. The aim of our present study was to examine in the CeA the possible interaction of OT and D2 dopamine (DA) receptor antagonist Sulpiride on reinforcement in place preference test and on anxiety

Recognition, legitimacy, and the persistence of hegemonic masculinity: a relational-constitutional account of masculine reproduction.

Dominant masculine configurations persist not through intrinsic psychological stability or widespread conscious endorsement, but through coupled recognitional and reinforcement dynamics distributed across institutional, economic, national, and digital fields. Drawing on social ontology and the sociology of recognition, this article proposes a persistence mechanics for hegemonic masculinity under contemporary conditions of labor precarity, militarism, nationalist mobilization, and digital communication. One consequence runs against intuition. Configurations are routinely reproduced by participa

The impact of wellness on neural learning systems.

Over the past 20 years there has been an increasing push for people to achieve or maintain "wellness" - a state in which one has not only physical but also mental and social well-being. While it may seem obvious that maintaining a state of wellness is beneficial, little research has been done to probe how maintaining a state of wellness impacts our brain. Here, we specifically examined the impact of wellness on a neural system within the medial-frontal cortex responsible for human reinforcement learning. Sixty-two undergraduate students completed the Perceived Wellness Survey after which they

Improving social functioning in schizophrenia by playing the train game.

Social impairments have long been recognized as a core feature of schizophrenia. Poor social, self-care, and vocational functioning are criteria for a diagnosis of schizophrenia in most diagnostic systems. Consequently, improving the social behaviors of persons with schizophrenia has been a key target of psychiatric rehabilitation techniques. One such technique, social skills training, has demonstrated effectiveness in yielding skill acquisition, durability, and generalization (1) and has been recognized as a psychosocial treatment of choice for schizophrenia (2). Nevertheless, a number of lim

A review of the community reinforcement approach in the treatment of opioid dependence.

This article reviews the Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) in the treatment of opioid dependence. It covers the use of CRA with both methadone maintenance patients and patients withdrawing from opioids. The data reviewed in the use of CRA in combination with methadone maintenance shows improvement in a number of areas. These include the reduction of opioid use, as well as other drugs of abuse, improved legal status, less psychiatric symptoms, and improved vocational and social functioning. CRA coupled with vouchers can assist in retaining patients in treatment long enough to improve opioi

The therapeutic effect of reactive self-monitoring on the reduction of inappropriate social and stereotypic behaviours.

The effect of self-monitoring on the reduction of inappropriate social and stereotypic behaviour was investigated. Participants were three men and two women with mild to moderate learning disabilities. A multiple baseline design across participants was used. Participants were taught to monitor and record the frequency of their inappropriate behaviours. No extrinsic reinforcement was used throughout the study. Assessments of language ability and functional significance of behaviours were made. Significant reductions in target behaviours for all participants were observed. The findings suggest t

[Approaches in the treatment of pathologic gambling].

In the treatment of pathological gambling the diagnosis, treatment of the accessory psychopathology and the somatic condition are important. Motivation training, behavioural and reality-oriented therapy, modification of the lifestyle relaxation techniques and yoga proved useful. There is also experience with dynamically oriented treatment techniques self-esteem reinforcement, training of social skills, strategies which promote impulse control, artetherapy, group therapy, provision of relevant information etc. Family therapy is important both for a pathological gambler and his/her relatives. Rett syndrome: a preliminary analysis of stereotypy, stress, and negative affect.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a neurodevelopmental disorder primarily affecting females. It is characterized by apparently normative development of motor and communicative abilities followed by deterioration in these domains. Stereotypic hand movements are one of the core diagnostic criteria for RTT. There is some anecdotal but limited scientific evidence that changes in hand stereotypy may be a sign of increased anxiety or arousal (i.e., a 'stress response') in RTT. Understanding stress responsivity is difficult in RTT because almost all individuals are nonverbal or otherwise severely communicativel

A review and agenda for integrated disease models including social and behavioural factors.

Social and behavioural factors are critical to the emergence, spread and containment of human disease, and are key determinants of the course, duration and outcomes of disease outbreaks. Recent epidemics of Ebola in West Africa and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) globally have reinforced the importance of developing infectious disease models that better integrate social and behavioural dynamics and theories. Meanwhile, the growth in capacity, coordination and prioritization of social science research and of risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) practice within the current pand

The mediating role of social support in associations between childhood adversity, military sexual trauma, and homelessness in a nationally representative sample of US veterans.

Among veterans, availability of social support and histories of military sexual trauma (MST) and/or adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are particularly salient correlates of homelessness. Using path analyses, we investigated whether social support (i.e., interpersonal social support and community integration) would at least partially account for the relationships of MST and ACEs with any lifetime homelessness in a large, nationally representative sample of veterans (N = 4069, 9.8% female). Interpersonal social support and community integration partially explained the relationship between ACE

[Contingency management in opioid substitution treatment].

The majority of opiate-dependent patients in substitution treatment show additional substance-related disorders. Concomitant use of heroin, alcohol, benzodiazepines or cocaine compromises treatment success. Concomitant drug use may be treated by using contingency management (CM) which is based on learning theory. In CM, abstinence from drugs, as verified by drug screenings, is reinforced directly and contingently. Reinforcers used in CM studies with substituted patients were, amongst others, vouchers and take-home privileges. Studies in the USA show a medium average effect of CM on drug consum

Eliminating inappropriate classroom behavior using a DRO schedule: a preliminary study.

The purpose of this study was to eliminate out-of-seat behavior of a 14-yr.-old boy with learning disabilities using a single-subject design. Based on functional analysis, a Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior interval schedule was used to eliminate an inappropriate behavior. During baseline, an average of 15 out-of-seat behavior problems were recorded. After 4 wk. of intervention, the inappropriate out-of-seat behavior was eliminated and on-task behavior improved.

Real-time responses to epidemics: A Reinforcement-Learning approach.

Open-loop optimal control applied to epidemic outbreaks is a valuable tool to develop control principles and inform future preparedness guidelines. A drawback of this approach is its assumption of complete knowledge of both transmission dynamics and the effects of policy measures. As a result, such methods lack responsiveness to real-time conditions, since they do not integrate feedback from the evolving epidemic state. Overcoming this requires a closed-loop approach. We propose a novel closed-loop method for real-time social distancing responses using a general Reinforcement Learning (RL)-bas

Alcoholics anonymous and recovery in Türkiye: A qualitative study in the context of Social Identity Theory.

Alcoholics anonymous (AA) groups play a central role in facilitating the transition from an 'addicted' identity to a 'recovering' identity; however, empirical research on how this identity transformation is socially constructed, maintained and questioned within group contexts is limited. Drawing on Social Identity Theory (SIT), this qualitative study examines how AA group dynamics shape members' sense of belonging, processes of identity reconstruction and experiences of recovery while also illuminating the vulnerabilities that may destabilize recovery identity. The study involved in-depth inte

Trust in adolescence: Development, mechanisms and future directions.

Trust is the glue of society. While the trust we place in close others is crucial for our wellbeing, trust in strangers is important to fulfill needs that families and friends cannot provide. Adolescence is an important phase for the development of trust in strangers, because the social world of adolescents expands tremendously. We provide an overview of the development of trust in adolescence by reviewing studies that used the trust game, an experimental paradigm to measure trust between dyads during monetary exchange. We start from the notion that trust is a form of social reinforcement lear

Understanding college students' ecological contexts: A mixed methods and integrative approach.

Introduction: Understanding how students thrive-not just achieve-in college is an important psychological and social question. This study examines the social systems in students' lives and their relationships with student well-being and academic achievement. Methods: Using a mixed-methods approach integrating psychology and social work perspectives, we analyzed 90 student ecomaps to investigate the number and qualities of students' identified social systems and examined their predictive value across measures associated with student well-being and achievement. Results: Ecomap analysis provides

Prolonged social withdrawal (hikikomori) in a small European island state: a case report.

Hikikomori, described as "prolonged social withdrawal," is a condition characterized by an individual's severe social isolation in their home for at least 6 months with consequent functional impairment or distress. It is mainly observed in adolescents and young adults. It was initially described in Japanese cultures, but has since been reported in other countries. This report is the first to describe a case of hikikomori in a male patient in Malta, an island nation in the central Mediterranean and one of Europe's smallest countries. He presented to psychiatric services incidentally after over

Social and temporal disorientation during the Covid-19 pandemic: An analysis of 3306 responses to a quantitative questionnaire.

The societal hallmark of the Covid-19 pandemic was a set of mitigation measures such as lockdowns and curfews. The cognitive impact on the public of the resulting spatial, social and temporal constraints is still being investigated. While pandemic time has been extensively studied and mostly described as slowed down and elongated, opposite experimental patterns across national and social contexts leave open an important explanatory gap in order to understand which factor has been causally fundamental in determining the phenomenology of the crisis. In this paper, we use a quantitative questionn
