Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) is a rare cause of anemia associated with SLE. We herein report a case presenting with SLE and PRCA. A 33-year-old woman, who had been suffering from photosensitivity, proteinuria, and pancytopenia, was diagnosed to have SLE. She showed normochromatic normocytic anemia. Hemolysis of red blood cells (RBC) in stenotic or regurgitant cardiac valvular lesions has been felt to be due to mechanical trauma and shearing stress caused by turbulence of blood. We report a case of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in an adult patient with Plasmodium vivax malaria. The patient presented with worsening anemia, persistent thrombocytopenia and acute kidney injury. HUS was diagnosed based on the high serum lactate dehydrogenase, elevated reticulocyte count and presence of schistocytes on peripheral blood smear. Ninety-six newborn aged 0-7 days with serum bilirubin of more than 15 mg/dl were studied for the G6PD status using semiquantitative and the assay method. It was found that the result of the 2 methods corresponded. The prevalence of G6PD deficiency was 12.4 per cent (there were 11 boys and one girl). Among the G6PD deficiency and the normal group, there was no difference in the age of the patient, onset of jaundice, bilirubin level, hematocrit status and the reticulocyte count. The semiquantitative method is a reliable as the assay method.

To compare the clinical effectiveness of total splenectomy (TS) or partial splenectomy (PS) in pediatric hereditary spherocytosis, a systematic review and meta-analysis was performed (PROSPERO registration CRD42015030056). There were 14 observational studies comparing pre- and postoperative hematologic parameters. Secondary outcomes include in-hospital infections, surgical complications, symptomatic recurrence, and biliary disease. TS is more effective than PS to increase hemoglobin (3.6 g/dl vs. 2.2 g/dl) and reduce reticulocytes (12.5% vs. 6.5%) after 1 year; outcomes following PS are stable

Infection of mice with rapidly proliferating trypanosomes that killed the mice in the first or second wave of parasitemia led to a dramatic decrease of immature erythrocytes in the peripheral blood during the primary wave of parasitemia. Trypanosome variants producing lower first waves of parasitemia, and/or less rapid deaths, caused a variable, on the average small, decrease of immature erythrocytes. Trypanosome variants causing rapidly lethal infections killed the mice before a decrease of immature erythrocytes became apparent.
