Primary alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the brain: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary brain rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare primary brain malignancy with few case reports. The vast majority of cases of primary brain rhabdomyosarcoma occur in pediatric patients, and immunohistochemistry can distinguish it from embryonal subtypes; however, few cases of primary brain rhabdomyosarcoma in adults have been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 26-year-old White male patient who was found to have primary brain alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma after developing headaches for several months. A brain MRI revealed a mixed cystic and solid tumor alo

Teratoma with naturally occurring malignant transformation in a child.

We present a 12-year-old girl with a teratoma with malignant transformation (TMT) of the mediastinum. Computed tomography showed a cystic mass (5.0 cm × 4.0 cm) with a thick solid portion, in the anterior mediastinum. Six months later, the solid portion of the mass had enlarged, and surgical resection was performed. The resected tumor was 7.0 × 5.0 × 4.0 cm in size. The cystic portion was a mature teratoma, and the solid portion predominantly comprised a viable embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. There were no immature teratomatous elements or other germ-cell components. The histopathologic diagnosis

Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma in young adult- a case report.

Para testicular rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare malignant tumour, which usually presents as a painless mass in the scrotum or groin. A case of para testicular rhabdomyosarcoma in a 17-year-old male is being reported here who presented with chronic scrotal pain. Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare non germ cell tumour of scrotal sac in children and young adult/teens which can invade testis at presentation. Embryonal variant is the most common type. 40% cases can have metastasis to retroperitoneal lymph node. Diagnosis can be done on high degree of clinical suspicion coupled with biopsy and imm

Malignant Ectomesenchymoma: Series Analysis of a Histologically and Genetically Heterogeneous Tumor.

AIMS: Malignant ectomesenchymoma is a rare pediatric neoplasm with dual mesenchymal and neuroectodermal elements. Mesenchymal component is usually rhabdomyosarcoma, particularly embryonal subtype, whereas neuroectodermal derivatives are frequently a neuroblastic tumor. Ectomesenchymoma manifests in various sites given the wide migration of neural crest cells during development, though the pelvis/perineum is most often involved. Moreover, no unique unifying molecular abnormality has been determined. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study to analyze the spectrum of ectomesenchymal tumors e

Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Middle Ear Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a highly malignant soft tissue tumor derived from primitive embryonal mesenchymal tissue that differentiates into striated skeletal muscle. Despite the improved outcome based on the EFS and OS using the three different treatment modalities-chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgical treatment, the survival of patients depends on their IRS groups-pathological and surgical. On the other hand in the last thirty years a great improvement of the five-year overall survival (OS) of children with RMS have been observed based on the results of large multinational colla

Naturally occurring mediastinal teratoma with malignant transformation in an adult male.

We report a rare case of rhabdomyosarcoma spontaneously arising in an anterior mediastinal teratoma in a 47-year-old male. The patient was found to have an anterior mediastinal mass on a chest X-ray, which was taken two months before his presentation to Asan Medical Center. A subsequent computed tomography scan revealed an 8.9×7.1×8.0 cm heterogeneous mass in the anterior mediastinum. He underwent an excision via median sternotomy. The histopathologic study identified a mature teratoma with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

April 1999--44 year old man with a bleeding intracerebral tumor.

A 44 year-old man presented with a three month history of increasing headache and evolving left sided hemiparesis that culminated in an haemorrhage into an intracerebral tumour which was partially resected. Histologic, immunohistochemical, electron microscopic and molecular studies are supportive of a diagnosis of primary embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. While primary rhabdomyosarcoma of the central nervous system is rare, and 72% of previously reported cases are in the paediatric population, there appears to be subset of these tumours occurring supratentorially in the adult.

The treatment of advanced or recurrent malignant genitourinary tumors in children.

Wilms' tumor, embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, and yolk sac tumor are the most frequently diagnosed malignant genitourinary tumors in children. The randomized therapeutic trials developed by the National Wilms' Tumor Study (NWTS) committee have produced significant improvements in the survival of Wilms' tumor patients. Those with Stage IV, favorable histology Wilms' tumor now have a 2-year survival rate of 87% to 93%. Patients with recurrent Wilms' tumor are being prospectively treated with new drugs and drug combinations with the goal of identifying active agents for inclusion in future therapeuti

First Description of Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Larynx in a Young Child.

Rhabdomyosarcoma of the larynx has been very rarely described in pediatric population. There are 3 histological subtypes: embryonal, pleomorphic, and alveolar. With regard to the English literature, we present the first case of alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the larynx ever described in a child. This tumor has been diagnosed on an endoscopic biopsy. Thus, a unilateral arytenoidectomy has been performed. This tumor has a poor prognosis. Lymph node metastases were successfully treated by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Surgery has shifted from radical to conservative combined with adjuvant treatmen

Vaginal botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma in an infant: A case report and review of the literature.

Botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare and aggressive malignancy that primarily affects the female genital tract in children. It arises from embryonal rhabdomyoblasts. The vagina is the most common site, but it can also occur, although rarely, in the cervix or uterine fundus. We report the case of a 2-year-old girl who presented with a rapidly growing mass in the vulvar region. A pelvic MRI revealed a grape-like mass occupying the vaginal lumen, suggestive of botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma. Biopsy of the mass confirmed the diagnosis.

Perianal rhabdomyosarcoma presenting 21 months after hamartoma excision.

Perianal rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare type of tumor with a relatively poor prognosis. We present the case of a patient who presented with a cutaneous perianal hamartoma at the age of 6 weeks. 21 months latter a recurrent mass at the excision site proved to be an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma involving the anal sphincter. A pathologic review of the two specimens confirmed their relatedness. This report highlights the need to maintain a high level of suspicion in cases of recurrence following excision of a benign lesion.

Rhabdomyosarcoma arising within congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation.

Rhabdomyosarcoma arising within a congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) is an unusual entity. The patient underwent a lobectomy of his right lower lobe of lung due to a CCAM at the age of two. One year later, he developed a solid embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma at the same location. He received 1-year period chemotherapy and when the tumor reduced to a resectable size, surgical excision was done. The tumor cells appeared more differentiated after chemotherapy. The patient remains disease free to date, 16 months after surgery.

Primary cardiac rhabdomyosarcoma successfully treated with eribulin: a case report.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common soft tissue sarcoma that typically occurs in children and adolescents and is rare in adults. Furthermore, as cardiac tumor is rare, adult cardiac rhabdomyosarcoma is a very rare entity. Here, we report the case of a 68-year-old woman with cardiac rhabdomyosarcoma who was successfully treated with eribulin. She presented with sudden loss of consciousness, which was attributed to the cardiac tumor. The tumor was resected by emergency surgery and was diagnosed as embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. Although surgical treatment alleviated her symptoms, the residual tumor

Diagnosis and behavior of juvenile rhabdomyosarcoma.

The main problems in the diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma are 1) distinction of undifferentiated examples from other small cell malignancies, especially soft-tissue Ewing's tumor and lymphoma; 2) distinction of spindling examples from fibrosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, polyhistioma, and other sarcomas; 3) recognition of minimal criteria on small samples such as needle biopsy specimens or frozen sections; and 4) recognition of rhabdomyosarcoma in uncommon sites such as bone (mandible), perineum, retroperitoneum, and chest. In 95 pediatric cases diagnosed and treated at R

Increased Risk of Sarcomas in Children With Congenital Anomalies: Findings From the Genetic Overlap Between Anomalies and Cancer in Kids (GOBACK) Registry Linkage Study.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of tumors that contribute disproportionately to cancer mortality in children. Although congenital anomalies are among the strongest known risk factors for childhood cancer, the risk of specific sarcoma subtypes among affected individuals has not yet been thoroughly evaluated. PROCEDURE: We obtained data on maternal and perinatal characteristics, congenital anomalies, and pediatric sarcoma diagnoses for all live births in nine states. We used Cox proportional hazards regression to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interva

The vulvar mass in the prepubertal child.

The differential diagnosis of the vulvar mass in the prepubertal patient is extensive and reported cases of a vulvar hamartoma in the literature are limited. The case presented in this work and review of the literature demonstrate that when considering the differential diagnosis of vulvar masses in the prepubertal female, hamartoma should be included. This review outlines the differential diagnosis of the vulvar mass and gives a comprehensive review of benign masses arising from embryonic remnants, those of mesenchymal origin as well as sarcoma botryoides-embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma and the emb

Pleuropulmonary blastoma (pulmonary blastoma of childhood): genetic link with other embryonal malignancies?

A case of pleuropulmonary blastoma (childhood variant of pulmonary blastoma) was examined using histological, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and cytogenetic methods. The tumour consisted of undifferentiated 'blastematous' areas admixed with zones of rhabdomyoblastic and chondroid differentiation and fascicular areas. Desmin and S-100 protein immunoreactivity confirmed the myogenic and cartilaginous differentiation. Ultrastructurally only undifferentiated mesenchymal cells were present. The cytogenetic analysis revealed abnormalities of 2q. Involvement of 2q has also been described in hep
