Aggressive behavior has been consistently associated with difficulties in emotion regulation, yet the mechanisms through which interpersonal vulnerability and impaired emotional awareness contribute to aggression remain insufficiently specified. Rejection sensitivity (RS) and alexithymia are established cognitive-affective risk factors, but their joint pathways to aggression warrant clarification. The present study aimed to test a theoretically grounded structural model in which anger rumination functions as a proximal cognitive-affective mechanism linking RS and alexithymia to aggressive beha

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although rumination and schizotypal traits can be considered transdiagnostic phenomena and can occur within non-clinical population as well, a relatively small number of research has been carried out on the topic involving both patient and non clinical participants. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between schizotypal traits and rumination using a transdiagnostic approach, involving participants living with psychotic disorders and sine morbo individuals.
METHODS: We recruited participants living with psychotic disorders (paranoid schizophrenia, hebe

In this literature review the new trends of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), namely behavioural activation and rumination-focused cognitive behavioural therapy are introduced as new methods for the treatment of major depression. Component-analytical studies of CBT showed that besides cognitive restructuring, behavioural components play an important role as active treatment factors. Behavioural activation and rumination-focused CBT emphasize these processes. The central idea of behavioural activation is that negative experiences in depression result in secondary avoidant behaviour. Clients

Rumination, defined as repetitive, negative, self-focused thinking, is hypothesized to be a transdiagnostic factor that is associated with depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Theory has suggested that in individuals with PTSD, rumination serves as a cognitive avoidance factor that contributes to the maintenance of symptoms by inhibiting the cognitive and emotional processing of the traumatic event, subsequently interfering with treatment engagement and outcome. Little is known about the neural correlates of rumination in women with PTSD. The current study utilized fu

Research has found that repetitive thought processes, such as worry and rumination, play an important role in several disorders; however, these cognitive processes have not yet been examined in insomnia. This study explores rumination and worry in insomnia by examining: 1) whether those high and low on rumination and worry differ on subjective sleep measures, and 2) whether rumination and worry are distinct processes in insomnia. Participants (N=242) were diagnosed with an insomnia disorder by sleep experts. Participants completed measures of worry and rumination and maintained a 2-week daily

Work-related thoughts during off-job time have been studied extensively in occupational health psychology and related fields. We provide a focused review of the research on overcommitment-a component within the effort-reward imbalance model-and aim to connect this line of research to the most commonly studied aspects of work-related rumination. Drawing on this integrative review, we analyze survey data on ten facets of work-related rumination, namely (1) overcommitment, (2) psychological detachment, (3) affective rumination, (4) problem-solving pondering, (5) positive work reflection, (6) nega

Rumination, or thinking repetitively about one's distress, is a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Current theories suggest that rumination contributes to PTSD symptoms directly, by increasing negative reactions to trauma cues (i.e., symptom exacerbation), or represents a form of cognitive avoidance, if verbal ruminations are less distressing than trauma imagery. The goal of this study was to test the symptom exacerbation and cognitive avoidance accounts of trauma-focused rumination. We recruited 135 trauma-exposed participants (n = 60 diagnosed with PTSD) and randomly assig

INTRODUCTION: Depressive symptoms, rumination, and childhood trauma are often interrelated psychological features associated with functional difficulties in mood disorders. Theoretically, they may interfere with daily functioning via an impact on cognition, but this patterning is not well understood in bipolar disorder.
METHOD: Participants were adults ages 18-70 years with a diagnosis of bipolar I or II disorder (n = 22) and healthy controls (n = 11). They completed a clinician-rated measure of depressive symptoms; self-reports of rumination, childhood trauma, and executive functioning; as w

This study of 125 mothers examined the role of rumination in maternal emotional and behavioral outcomes subsequent to discovery of the sexual abuse of their children. Abuse severity, a maternal history of child abuse experiences, and life hassles were examined as predictors of negative outcomes. The central finding was that these factors, many of which are not controllable, were less likely to predict poor maternal outcomes than was rumination, a cognitive process that may be alterable. Rumination was the strongest correlate with each outcome. Further, the effects of most predictors on outcome

Individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) often ruminate about past experiences, especially those with negative content. These repetitive thoughts may interfere with cognitive processes related to attention and conflict monitoring. However, the temporal nature of these processes as reflected in event-related potentials (ERPs) has not been well-described. We examined behavioral and ERP indices of conflict monitoring during a modified flanker task and the allocation of attention during an attentional blink (AB) task in 33 individuals with MDD and 36 healthy controls, and whether their beh

OBJECTIVE: Sleep problems are common among college students and represent an important public health concern. Previous studies have shown that physical activity is related to sleep quality. However, the psychological processes involved in this association are not fully understood. This study examined the association between physical activity level and sleep quality in college students and explored the sequential roles of rumination and emotion regulation strategies, including cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression.
METHODS: This study adopted a cross-sectional design. Data were coll

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction (IA) has emerged as a growing concern among college students, often accompanied by emotional distress and impaired self-regulation. While physical activity (PA) has been recognized as a protective factor, the underlying psychological mechanisms remain insufficiently explored.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of PA on IA among Chinese college students, with a focus on the mediating roles of rumination and mindfulness and their potential chain mediation pathway.
METHODS: A total of 1,019 undergraduate students (Mage = 20.30, SD = 1.59; 61.3%

Ruminative thinking, characterized by a recurrent focus on negative and self-related thought, is a key cognitive vulnerability marker of depression and, therefore, a key individual difference variable. This study aimed to develop a computational cognitive model of rumination focusing on the organization and retrieval of information in memory, and how these mechanisms differ in individuals prone to rumination and individuals less prone to rumination. Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational (ACT-R) was used to develop a rumination model by adding memory chunks with negative valence to the declarati

This study examined several forms of repetitive negative thinking in relation to measures of Cluster B disorders to identify unique and co-occurring cognitive mechanisms contributing to these symptom presentations. MTurk participants (N = 725; 53% men; 76% White) completed categorical and dimensional trait-based measures of Cluster B disorders alongside six measures of rumination and worry. Oversampling strategies were used during participant recruitment to obtain a sample with clinically relevant personality features. Path analyses examined each form of repetitive negative thinking in relatio

BACKGROUND: Depressive recurrence is highly prevalent and adds significantly to the burden of depressive disorder. Whilst some clinical predictors of recurrence have been clearly demonstrated (e.g. residual symptoms, previous episodes), the cognitive and psychological processes that may contribute to recurrence risk are less well established. In this study we examine whether cognitive flexibility deficits and rumination are related to recurrence in a remitted clinical sample.
METHOD: We compared remitted patients with 2 or more previous depressive episodes (N = 69) to a matched group of healt

OBJECTIVE: A ruminative cognitive style has been associated with a variety of mood and anxiety disorders. This study examined whether a ruminative cognitive style is associated with health anxiety, even when controlling for negative affect.
METHOD: College students (N=198) completed measures of health anxiety, rumination, and negative affect and estimated the likelihood that ambiguous symptoms were indicative of catastrophic illnesses. These data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.
RESULTS: A ruminative cognitive style was both indirectly associated with health anxiety via its

This study examined the associations between physical activity and crisis coping among college students, with a particular focus on the potential mediating roles of rumination and emotion regulation strategies, including expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal. A total of 1,033 Chinese college students (615 males, 418 females; aged 17-23 years, M = 20.30, SD = 1.59) completed self-report questionnaires. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed mediation and chain mediation models. The results indicated that physical activity was associated with both adaptive and mala

Cognitive control processes likely influence the extent to which adolescents can successfully regulate their emotions. This study examined whether individual differences in affective inhibition and heart rate variability (HRV), as a peripheral index of cognitive control, moderated the association between momentary emotion regulation and negative affect (NA). Ecological Momentary Assessments (EMA) over 14 days were obtained in 235 adolescents (Mage = 13.48 years; 106 females). At each assessment, participants reported their current NA and the extent to which they used cognitive reappraisal and

Recent research suggests that the stress-sleep relationship is mediated by pre-sleep arousal (PSA) and that cognitive arousal has a stronger mediating effect than somatic arousal; however, this has not been directly tested. Using multilevel moderated mediation, we compared the effects of cognitive arousal and somatic arousal within the stress-sleep relationship. We also assessed whether two forms of repetitive negative thought-rumination and worry-are similarly involved in the stress-sleep relationship. Data was collected from 178 participants across the United States via an online platform. P

The aim of this study was to identify whether certain cognitive factors, such as irrational beliefs and anger rumination, affect nurses' anger expression styles. A total of 335 nurses employed at four tertiary hospitals in Korea completed surveys between July 29 and September 25, 2015. The surveys included Shortened General Attitude and Belief Scale, the Korean Version of the Anger Rumination Scale, and the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-Korean version. Results revealed that higher levels of irrational beliefs and anger rumination were associated with more anger-in and anger-out, and l
