[2013 vulvodynia update].

Provoked vestibulodynia represents the most frequent cause of dyspareunia before menopause. Vulvodynia's pain and burning sensations are related to neuropathic pain and associated to various degrees of vulvar mucosal hypersensitivity (mostly in the vestibular area), pelvic floor muscles dysfunction, a disorder of general perception of pain and/or various complex regional pain syndromes such as fibromyalgia, glossodynia, painful bladder syndrome (interstitial cystitis)… Vaginal infections such as candidiasis and vaginosis are important trigger and risk factors. Women suffering from vulvodynia a

The role of self-concept clarity in prolonged grief disorder.

Three studies using independent samples of bereaved individuals were conducted to examine the association of self-concept clarity (SCC) with symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), a debilitating syndrome than can develop after bereavement. Study 1 (N = 67) showed that lower SCC was associated with greater PGD severity, independent from self-concept content change. Using a retrospective design, Study 2 (N = 116) showed that a loss can coincide with a decline in SCC, the magnitude of which was associated with acute PGD severity. Study 2 also showed that the maintenance of PGD symptoms over

Attention, automaticity, and affective disorder.

This article reviews possible mechanisms for attentional bias in affective disorders and anxiety. Attentional bias is sometimes conceptualized as automatic in nature. However, there are methodological difficulties with studies purporting to demonstrate automaticity, and empirical and simulation evidence suggest that bias may be predominantly strategic. Bias in the voluntary control of attention may be driven by coping strategies, which in turn depend on appraisal of external demands, metacognitions of mental function, access of self-relevant knowledge in long-term memory, and self-focus of att

[Toxinology of bovine paraplegic syndrome].

A clinical entity named "Bovine Paraplegic Syndrome" ("Síndrome Parapléjico de los Bovinos") has spread alarmingly, in the cattle growing areas of the central and eastern plains of Venezuela. Approximately four million cattle are bread in the area were the disease occurs. The mortality index due to the disease ranges 5 to 25% of the animals at risk, mostly cows, pregnant or lactating. The principal characteristic of the bovine paraplegic syndrome is decubitus, ventral or sternal, in animals that make vane efforts to stand when stimulated. The diagnosis is established ruling out, clinically and

The factor structure and validity of a diagnostic interview for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder in a sample of children, adolescents, and young adults.

OBJECTIVE: There is a paucity of validated diagnostic interviews for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) to aid identification and classification of cases for both clinical and research purposes. To evaluate the factor structure, construct validity, and criterion validity of the Pica ARFID and Rumination Disorder Interview (PARDI; ARFID module), we administered the PARDI to 129 children and adolescents ages 9-23 years (M = 16.1) with ARFID (n = 84), subclinical ARFID (n = 11), and healthy controls (n = 34). METHOD: We used exploratory factor analysis to examine the factor struct

Ruminative and mood associations for age differences in social and directive reasons to think and talk about life experiences.

Reminiscing, or thinking and talking about our past experiences, can have mood enhancing effects. Rumination is implicated in reminiscence and yet has been shown to have negative effects on mood, with important differences between age groups. However, age differences in the effects of reminiscing on mood, and particularly the effects of rumination within reminiscence, are less explored. Two different age groups completed self-report measures of the positive directive (planning for present and future behaviors) and social (communication) uses of autobiographical memory, as well as maladaptive r

Outbreak investigation identifies a single Listeria monocytogenes strain in sheep with different clinical manifestations, soil and water.

Listeria (L.) monocytogenes causes orally acquired infections and is of major importance in ruminants. Little is known about L. monocytogenes transmission between farm environment and ruminants. In order to determine potential sources of infection, we investigated the distribution of L. monocytogenes genetic subtypes in a sheep farm during a listeriosis outbreak by applying four subtyping methods (MALDI-TOF-MS, MLST, MLVA and PFGE). L. monocytogenes was isolated from a lamb with septicemia and from the brainstem of three sheep with encephalitis. Samples from the farm environment were screened

Depression and anxiety among Cambodian refugee women in France and the United States.

This study reports on Cambodian refugee data related to signs symptomatic of depression and anxiety, the tendency to worry or ruminate over past events (a culture-bound syndrome called "Khoucherang"), and differences that might be influenced by social system and cultural practice. A sample consisting of 155 women of Cambodian national origin were interviewed in their homes in the USA and France. Answers to the research questions were collected by a focused interview to elicit demographic information, and the Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL) in the Cambodian language to elicit depression and an

Pain catastrophizing levels differentiate between common diseases with pain: HIV, fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome, and breast cancer survivors.

OBJECTIVES: Pain catastrophizing is a core psychological factor determining pain experience. We addressed the question of whether patients with different pain syndromes group into different pain catastrophizing phenotypes. METHODS: A total of 727 patients with chronic pain associated with four primary syndromes: Breast cancer (BC) survivors (n = 400), fibromyalgia (FM, n = 52), complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS, n = 155), and HIV (n = 120) were first studied for differences in levels of pain catastrophizing (Pain Catastrophizing Scale, PCS) and pain intensity by analysis of variance. Ionophores.

Ionophores are a class of polyether antibiotics that are commonly used as anticoccidial agents and growth promotants in ruminant diets. Ionophores transport ions across lipid membranes and down concentration gradients, which results in mitochondrial destruction, reduced cellular energy production, and ultimately cell death. Cardiomyocytes are the primary target in equine patients when exposed to toxic concentrations and the clinical disease syndrome is related to myocardial damage. Animals can survive acute exposures but can have permanent heart damage that may result in acute death at future

Comprehensive epidemiological evaluation of ruminant brucellosis and associated risk factors in some Egyptian Governorates.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Brucellosis contributes to significant economic losses due to abortion, weak newborns, infertility, and up to 20% reductions in milk yield in carrier animals. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of ruminant brucellosis in six Egyptian governorates. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of ruminant brucellosis and evaluate the risk factors regarding the epidemiological status, highlighting the importance of early carrier detection for the success of control programs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 3000 ruminants were investigated. Blood and serum samples we

Rome V: minimizing "functional", maximizing precision in gut-brain disorders.

Rome V represents a major conceptual and clinical evolution in the field of disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). Its most important contribution is the deliberate move away from the term "functional", a label that has often implied that symptoms are less real, less biological, or merely psychological. By emphasizing DGBI, Rome V reframes these conditions as positive diagnoses arising from altered gut-brain regulation, visceral sensitivity, motility, mucosal and immune mechanisms, microbiota, autonomic function, and central processing. Beyond terminology, Rome V introduces greater diagnos

Retrospective study using biosensor data of a milking Holstein cow with jejunal haemorrhage syndrome.

Jejunal haemorrhage syndrome (JHS) is a sporadic and fatal enterotoxaemic disease in dairy cows associated with acute development and poor prognosis despite treatment. A 5-year-old Holstein cow with no reported pregnancy, three calving numbers, and 303 days in milk presented with hypothermia, discomfort, and inappetence. Anaemia, dehydration, faeces with blood clots, and absence of rumen and bowel movements were observed. We identified the presence of neutrophilia, hyperglycaemia, hypoproteinaemia, azotaemia, hyperlactatemia, hypocalcaemia, hypermagnesemia, hypokalaemia, and hypochloraemia thr

Gastrointestinal problems in the neurologically impaired child.

Damage to the developing central nervous system may result in significant dysfunction in the gastrointestinal tract and is reflected in impairment in oral-motor function, rumination, gastro-oesophageal reflux, with or without aspiration, delayed gastric emptying and constipation. These problems can all potentially contribute to feeding difficulty in disabled children. Early recognition of an infant with neurological impairment that is compromising the normal feeding process is crucial. Detailed assessment of the nature of the feeding difficulties will help to predict the anticipated future nut

Microbial food borne pathogens. Escherichia coli O157:H7.

Escherichia coli O157:H7 has emerged in the past 20 years as a pathogen of public health importance. Although most E. coli are normal flora in the colons of humans and other warm-blooded animals, several strains are capable of causing disease in humans. In recent years, E. coli O157:H7 and other shiga-like toxin-producing strains have been transmitted via foods and caused disease ranging from bloody diarrhea, and in more severe cases, hemolytic uremic syndrome and thrombocytopenic purpura. The reservoir appears to be cattle and, perhaps, other ruminants. Control is difficult in nonheated foods

Toxicologic aspects of photosensitization in livestock.

Two types of plant-caused photosensitizations are recognized in livestock: 1) primary, wherein the phototoxic agent in the plant is ingested and reaches the skin chemically unchanged; and 2) secondary, wherein the phototoxic agent in the porphyrin phylloerythrin produced by chlorophyll degradation in ruminant stomachs. Phylloerythrin is normally excreted in bile but is allowed to reach the skin when hepatic damage interferes with the phylloerythrin-excreting mechanism. Primary photosensitizing plant toxins are few, whereas secondary photosensitizations can be caused by damage to the liver by a

Rumination, but Not Reflection, Predicts the Reporting of Post-concussive Symptoms in a Non-clinical Sample.

OBJECTIVE: Although traditionally associated with mild head trauma, post-concussive symptoms are commonly reported across both healthy and other clinical populations. Existing research indicates that individuals with depression report high levels of post-concussive symptoms, though the underlying causes of this association remain unknown. The current study aimed to explore potential factors underlying this relationship: specifically, how maladaptive and adaptive self-focused cognitive coping styles, namely, rumination and reflection, respectively, differentially contribute to post-concussive s

Selected ethno-medicinal plants from Kenya with in vitro activity against major African livestock pathogens belonging to the "Mycoplasma mycoides cluster".

ETHNOPHARMOCOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Members of 'Mycoplasma mycoides cluster' are important ruminant pathogens in Africa. Diseases caused by these Mycoplasma negatively affect the agricultural sector especially in developing countries through losses in livestock productivity, mortality and international trade restrictions. There is therefore urgent need to develop antimicrobials from alternative sources such as medicinal plants to curb these diseases. In Kenya, smallholder farmers belonging to the Maasai, Kuria and Luo rely on traditional Kenyan herbals to treat respiratory symptoms in ruminants. I

Russell-Silver syndrome and nonverbal learning disability: a case study.

Russell-Silver Syndrome (RSS) is a rare genetic developmental disorder characterized by prenatal and postnatal growth delays and other physical abnormalities. Neuropsychological screening was completed with LP, a 20-year-old college male diagnosed at one year of age with Russell-Silver Syndrome. LP's history and test findings yielded a profile consistent with a nonverbal learning disability, with significantly higher verbal compared to nonverbal intelligence, deficient visual-spatial memory, fine motor coordination and motor planning problems, relatively greater difficulty in math compared to

In-utero overgrowth in ruminants following embryo culture: lessons from mice and a warning to men.

Unusually large offspring have been born in ruminants following the transfer to recipients of embryos that have either been subjected to some form of manipulation, e.g. nuclear transfer, or have been exposed to an unusual in-vivo or in-vitro environment. Overgrowth syndromes have been reported in other species, including humans and mice, but these have arisen from chromosomal abnormalities and spontaneous or experimentally induced genetic mutations. Overgrowth phenotypes across the species, however, exhibit many common features, including alterations in organ and tissue development, and placen
