A plant-based repellent protects against Tunga penetrans infestation and sand flea disease.

Tungiasis is a parasitic skin disease prevalent in impoverished populations in the tropics and associated with considerable morbidity. Treatment options are limited and prophylaxis has never been attempted. We assessed the effectiveness of a plant-based repellent to prevent infestation with Tunga penetrans and sand flea disease in an urban squatter settlement in Fortaleza, Northeast Brazil. Two cohorts were formed. One cohort started with the intervention while another served as control. The plant-based repellent Zanzarin was applied twice daily on the skin of the feet. After 4 weeks and a was…

Phylogeography of the neotropical sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis inferred from mitochondrial DNA sequences.

Sand flies in the Lutzomyia longipalpis species complex include the primary vector of Leishmania chagasi, the etiologic agent of visceral leishmaniasis in the Neotropics. Twelve L. longipalpis populations from South and Central America were compared using the cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene from the mitochondrial genome. The haplotype profiles for each population revealed that the majority of sequence variation was inter-population (98%) rather than intra-population, suggesting that sequence polymorphisms at the COI locus should provide excellent characters for the study of phylogenetic rela…

SAND: Spectral-Attention Neural Decoding of Hand Kinematics from Low-Frequency EEG Dynamics.

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology, integrating neuroscience and artificial intelligence, has been widely applied in neural rehabilitation. However, hand kinematics decoding via electroencephalography (EEG) is constrained by limited precision and cross-subject adaptability. This study proposes the Spectral-Attention Neural Decoder (SAND) - a hybrid framework synergizing spectral decomposition and adaptive deep learning for robust 2D/3D trajectory reconstruction. Systematic analysis of the WAY EEG Grasp-and-Lift dataset revealed that hand movement information is primarily encoded in low-…

Molecular characterization of a proposed novel macluravirus identified in sand ginger (Kaempferia galanga).

A novel macluravirus, designated provisionally as "kaempferia virus A" (KVA), was identified in sand ginger (Kaempferia galanga) by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The complete genome of this virus is 8,274 nucleotides in length, excluding the poly(A) tail. Its genome organization is typical of members of the genus Macluravirus, with a single large open reading frame (ORF) that encodes a polyprotein of 2,636 amino acids that is predicted to be processed into nine mature proteins. Comparative sequence analysis revealed that KVA shares 55-70% nucleotide sequence identit…

Thinking outside the box: Citizen science to monitor phlebotomine sand flies in Spain.

The Flebocollect project is a citizen science (CS) initiative in which a diverse group of participants, mainly high-school students, were requested to monitor sand flies (fm. Psychodidae; sfm. Phlebotominae), vectors of Leishmania parasites and Phlebovirus. The project generated entomological data that was then used to prepare an online free-access sand fly monitoring map providing information about the distribution areas of this vector group in Spain. This initiative contributes to our understanding of sand fly dynamics and thus of the risk of disease transmission, while promoting education a…

Reduction of Helicobacter pylori cells in rural water supply using slow sand filtration.

Helicobacter pylori is a microorganism that infects 60% of the population and is considered the main cause of atrophic gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and gastric cancer. Different emerging pathogens have been found in drinking water and their presence is considered to be an important public health problem. For this reason, it is necessary to carry out the validation of reliable technologies for this type of pathogens and evaluate their performance. This paper reports, for the first time, H. pylori reduction in a drinking water pilot plant of two slow sand filters (SSF). Inlet water wa…

Sand Enteropathy in a Free-Ranging Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) from Florida, USA.

A subadult Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) was found dead near a fishing pier in Florida, USA. Necropsy revealed abundant sand accumulation throughout the intestines. Fibrinous coelomitis with isolation of mixed bacteria, including Enterobacter cloacae complex, suggests secondary intestinal compromise. Sand ingestion might reflect geophagia, environmental hardships, or age-related diving inexperience.

Typical Sulfonamide Antibiotics Removal by Biochar-Amended River Coarse Sand during Groundwater Recharge.

The high porosity of medium-coarse sand (MCS) layers in groundwater recharge areas presents a high environmental risk. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP) are two common sulfonamide antibiotics in surface water that have a high propensity to migrate into groundwater. In this study, four biochars were prepared and biochar-amended soil aquifer treatment (SAT) columns were constructed to remove SMX and TMP. Batch experiments demonstrated that the sorption isotherms conformed to the Freundlich model. The maximum adsorptions of biochars prepared at 700 °C were 54.73 and 67.62 mg/g for SMX…

Iron rich glauconite sand as an efficient phosphate immobilising agent in river sediments.

The reductive dissolution of iron (Fe) (oxy)hydroxides in sediments releases phosphorus (P) to the overlying water and may lead to eutrophication. Glauconite sands (GS) are rich in Fe and may be used as readily available P sorbents. This study was set up to test effects of dose and type of GS on the P immobilisation in sediments under hypoxic conditions. Three different GS were amended to a P-rich river sediment at doses of 0% (control), 5% and 10% (weight fractions) and incubated with overlying water in batch laboratory conditions. Glutamate was added to the solution after 15 days to deplete …

Household slow sand filter to treat groundwater with microbiological risks in rural communities.

Household slow sand filters (HSSFs) improve the quality of life in rural communities as they provide safe water. However, HSSFs require time for the growth of the biological layer (schmutzdecke) to achieve maximum performance, especially when groundwater is used as it normally has few nutrients. In this ripening period, pathogenic microorganisms can pass through the filter. In this context, this study reports the performance of two HSSF settings, intermittent (I-HSSF) and continuous (C-HSSF) flows followed by disinfection with sodium hypochlorite to treat groundwater with Escherichia coli, Gia…

A new cavernicolous sand fly from Cambodia: Idiophlebotomus nicolegerae n. sp. (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Cambodia is an area considered free of leishmaniasis and consequently little is known of its' phlebotomine sand fly fauna. Only six species of sand flies have previously been recorded: Sergentomyia barraudi, Sergentomyia pertubans, Sergentomyia bailyi, Sergentomyia silvatica, Sergentomyia khawi and Grassomyia indica and none belonging to the genus Phlebotomus. During an inventory carried out in Cambodia, we caught a new species, belonging to the genus Idiophlebotomus, in a cave. We describe the new species in this paper and also report three other new species for the country: Sergentomyia anod…
