Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare malignant tumour that is considered to lack a normal cell counterpart and is commonly associated with a poorer prognosis. Etio-pathologically, it has been associated with alveolar soft part sarcoma critical region-1-transcription factor for immunoglobulin heavy chain enhancer 3 fusion gene. Diagnosis is usually confirmed through histopathology, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and molecular testing. Being chemo-resistant, surgical excision with clear margins is the primary treatment, with radiation therapy considered adjuvant in advanced cases. Deceptively

The results of surgical resection for pulmonary metastases from colorectal, breast, and renal cell carcinomas, soft tissue sarcoma, and osteosarcoma are reviewed. The number of pulmonary metastases, the presence of hilar or mediastinal involvement, and extrapulmonary foci are discussed in terms of surgical treatment. The size of pulmonary tumors or tumor doubling time has no significant effect on survival, while the number of metastatic foci does. Although a slight survival advantage has been noted for patients without hepatic metastases from colorectal cancer before pulmonary metastases occur

In addition to abnormalities in systemic immune function, patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and the pre-AIDS syndromes have significant abnormalities in the distribution of T-cell subsets in the intestinal tract. Such immune deficits predispose such patients to opportunistic infections and tumors, many of which involve the gastrointestinal tract. For example, Candida albicans often causes stomatitis and esophagitis. Intestinal infections with parasites (Cryptosporidium, Isospora belli, Microsporidia) or bacteria (Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare) are associated with

The Connective Tissue Oncology Group Annual Meeting 2018 (CTOS 2018) took place in Rome from 4 to 17 November 2018, and the 39th Plenary Meeting of the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group (SSGM 2019) was held in Bergen from 8 to 10 May 2019. These two large international conferences brought together an overwhelming majority of molecular and clinical specialists in the sarcoma field, especially those working on soft tissue sarcoma. Topics discussed on the conferences included, among others, sarcoma genetics, clinical and molecular subclassification, targeted therapy, clinical prognostication, and new ex

The Carney triad is the combination of gastric stromal sarcoma, pulmonary chondroma, and extra-adrenal paraganglioma. Herein, we describe the clinical, imaging, pathologic, and follow-up findings from 14 patients for a fourth component of the syndrome, adrenal adenoma. The adrenal neoplasm was asymptomatic and usually a late finding. Results of adrenocortical function tests were normal. Computed tomography revealed low-density adrenal masses that were consistent with adenomas. Bilateral lesions were present in 4 patients. In 13 of the 14 patients who underwent surgery, resected adrenal glands

Since recognition during the last decade that certain renal carcinogens can initially cause an accumulation of hyaline (protein) droplets in proximal tubules of male rats, it has become appropriate to establish whether this phenomenon of protein overload can also occur in rodent kidneys unrelated to chemical treatment. Kidney tissue from a number of selected rodent studies held in the National Toxicology Program (NTP) or Food and Drug Administration (FDA) archives were evaluated for hyaline droplet accumulation in proximal tubules. The survey concentrated on rats and mice of both sexes bearing

A 57-year old woman presented with a 18-month history of a vertex lesion. The first excisional biopsy showed an histopathology dermal proliferation of epithelioid splinded cells, arranged in nests or trabeculae, suggesting a tumoral pathology such as sarcoma or melanoma, without a definitive diagnosis. Further surgical treatment was realised. The definitive diagnosis is a clear cell tumor with melanocytic differentiation and MITF::CREM translocation. It is a recently described rare tumor, with less than 5 cases reported. This article addresses the management of a rare tumor in a plastic surger

Malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumor (GNET), also referred to as clear cell sarcoma-like tumor of the GI tract is a rare mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract. It has to be distinguished from various mimickers including gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) due to its aggressive course and different natural history and therapeutic approach. Here we report a case of GNET arising in the small intestine with aberrant DOG1 expression posing a diagnostic challenge. In this context, the combination of clinical, histomorphological, immunohistochemical, and molecular features hel

OBJECTIVES: EWS/FLI-1 fusion mainly appears in Ewing's sarcoma or the primitive neuroectodermal tumors and represents a genomic marker for these tumors. However, it can appear with lower frequency in other soft tissue tumors. The paper investigates the presence of EWS/FLI-1 fusion in clinically diagnosed sarcoma belonging to different non-Ewing connective tissue tumors in order to search for a possible new biomarker valuable for investigators.
METHODOLOGY: 20 patients with soft tissue tumors, who underwent surgery, were tested. Intra-operative samples of normal and tumor tissue were collected

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of two or more distinct neoplasms within the same anatomical site characterizes collision tumors. While the presence of dual tumors is frequently observed in esophageal cases, the simultaneous occurrence of three distinct tumor types is extremely rare, posing significant challenges for pathological evaluation and diagnosis. Surgical resection remains the primary treatment, with generally favorable outcomes.

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm that typically affects young patients and presents as large intraabdominal masses. We report a rare case of parotid gland DSRCT in a 38-year-old man. The tumor cells were large sized and form irregular nests embedded in abundant desmoplastic stroma. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin, GATA3, p40, and p63. Working differential diagnosis included squamous cell carcinoma, myoepithelial carcinoma, hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma, NUT (nuclear protein of the testis) carcinoma, and

Tumor seeding after intra-abdominal and head and neck cancer surgery is a well-known entity. The risk of disseminating cancerous cells during surgery is also described for soft-tissue sarcoma of the extremities. Nonetheless, after reconstructive surgery using flaps, the risk of recurrence at the donor site is extremely rare. Up to this date, the literature describes only three cases, but none of them reported a translocated recurrence after a reconstruction with a propeller flap. Here, we report a case of high-grade pleomorphic sarcoma of the knee, which recurred at the proximal edge of a prop

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the response rates of different extremity soft-tissue sarcoma subtypes (eSTS) after isolated limb perfusion (ILP), based on an international multi-centre study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The retrospective cohort comprised eSTS patients from 17 specialised ILP centres that underwent melphalan-based ILP, with or without recombinant human tumour necrosis factor (rhTNFα) (TM-ILP and M-ILP, respectively). Response was measured on imaging (magnetic resonance imaging) and/or clinical response, for which M-ILPs were excluded.
RESULTS: A total of 1109

BACKGROUND: Primary tracheal hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is an exceptionally rare, low-grade malignant epithelial tumor. Its nonspecific respiratory manifestations and overlapping histopathological features with other clear cell neoplasms can delay diagnosis. Molecular alterations involving the Ewing sarcoma breakpoint region 1 (EWSR1) gene are diagnostically valuable; however, the clinicopathological features, optimal management, and long-term outcomes of tracheal HCCC remain insufficiently characterized. We present two cases to expand the limited evidence regarding its diagnosis

A case of abdominal Burkitt's lymphoma diagnosed through aspiration cytology is described. This 9-year-old boy presented with abdominal pain and distention for three months accompanied by fever and night sweat during the last month. An abdominal sonography and CT scan showed hepatosplenomegaly and an intrahepatic mass with celiac lymph node enlargement, ascites, and pleural fluid. A peripheral blood smear showed a few blast cells. Aspiration of the abdominal mass revealed very cellular aspirates consisting of diffusely scattered small monotonous round cells. The cells had little cytoplasm, alo

Uterine collision tumor is a rare pathologic type composed of two or more malignant tumors, with cervical collision tumors being even rarer. The mechanism of occurrence of collision tumors is not clear. We hope to help clinicians and pathologists understand and diagnose this condition. We report a case of a 53-year-old female diagnosed with poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix through biopsy. After reviewing previous reports on collision tumors in different locations and theiry types in the cervix and uterus, we found that collisions between cervical squamous cell carcin

The overwhelming majority of cutaneous neoplasms with melanocytic differentiation are nevi, melanomas, or less commonly melanocytomas. Nevertheless, there is also a group of mesenchymal neoplasms with genuine melanocytic differentiation which can create diagnostic difficulties with significant repercussions. These can rarely present as primary or metastatic cutaneous lesions. The ones that are relevant to a dermatopathologist include malignant melanotic nerve sheath tumor, perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasm, and clear cell sarcoma. This work will provide a thorough review of clinical prese
