PURPOSE: No study has compared 30-day and 90-day adverse postoperative outcomes between old-age patients with and those without sarcopenia.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We categorize elderly patients receiving major surgery into two groups according to the presence or absence of preoperative sarcopenia that were matched at a 1:4 ratio through propensity score matching (PSM). We analyzed 30-day or 90-day adverse postoperative outcomes and mortality in patients with and without sarcopenia receiving major surgery.
RESULTS: Multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that the patients with preop

BACKGROUND: Degeneration of the motoneuron and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) and loss of motor units (MUs) contribute to age-related muscle wasting and weakness associated with sarcopenia. However, these features have not been comprehensively investigated in humans. This study aimed to compare neuromuscular system integrity and function at different stages of sarcopenia, with a particular focus on NMJ stability and MU properties.
METHODS: We recruited 42 young individuals (Y) (aged 25.98 ± 4.6 years; 57% females) and 88 older individuals (aged 75.9 ± 4.7 years; 55% females). The older group un

Sarcopenia, characterized by the loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, is a significant complication in patients with cirrhosis. This condition not only exacerbates the overall morbidity and mortality associated with liver disease but also complicates patient management, increasing the risk of hospitalization, infections, and hepatic encephalopathy. Despite its clinical significance, sarcopenia in cirrhotic patients remains underdiagnosed and undertreated. This review aims to summarize current knowledge on the pathophysiology of sarcopenia in cirrhosis, including mechanisms such as altere

Sarcopenia, the progressive decline of muscle mass and function, has traditionally been viewed as an age-related process leading to a broad range of adverse outcomes. However, it has been widely reported that sarcopenia can occur earlier in life in association with various conditions (i.e. disease-related sarcopenia), including neuromuscular disorders. As early as 2010, the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People included neurodegenerative diseases characterised by motor neuron loss among the mechanisms underlying sarcopenia. Despite some differences in pathogenetic mechanisms, bo

The triglyceride glucose (TyG) related index, a metric used to evaluate assessing insulin resistance (IR), has received limited attention in its association with sarcopenia. Our study aims to explore the predictive potential of the TyG index for sarcopenia. This study utilized data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, a nationally representative, community-based cohort study, including a sample size of 10,537 participants aged 45 years and older. Associations between TyG related index and sacopenia was explored using multivariate logistic regression. Analysis of the predict

Sarcopenia is a progressive generalized skeletal muscle disease that is accompanied by an accelerated loss of muscle mass and function, affecting the quality of life and the ability to perform self-care. The prevalence of sarcopenia in the world today ranges from 10 to 25%, which represents a certain danger as it is a prognostic factor for possible injury and increased disability in the elderly population. Sarcopenia often accompanies a large number of different diseases, including neurodegenerative ones, so it is actively studied in this category of patients, for example, as one of the early

Sarcopenia is a prevalent condition in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), intricately linked to adverse prognoses, heightened cardiovascular risks, and increased mortality rates. Extensive studies have found a close and complex association between gut microbiota, kidney and muscle. On one front, patients with CKD manifest disturbances in gut microbiota and alterations in serum metabolites. These abnormal microbiota composition and metabolites in turn participate in the development of CKD. On another front, altered gut microbiota and its metabolites may lead to significant changes in m

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia has a negative impact on the number of populations. The frequency of sarcopenia in polytrauma patients, however, is little understood. Knowing how many people face a bad outcome will raise awareness and help stop additional muscle mass loss.
AIM: This pilot study's objectives included determining prevalence of the low mass of muscle in the aged patients of poly-trauma and examining the links between complications, low muscle mass, death, and the inflammatory response.
METHOD: All polytrauma patients who were seen between 2017 and 2021 at the level-I trauma centre were

Function declines throughout life although phenotypical manifestations in terms of frailty or disability are only seen in the later periods of our life. The causes underlying lifelong function decline are the aging process "per se", chronic diseases, and lifestyle factors. These three etiological causes result in the deterioration of several organs and systems which act synergistically to finally produce frailty and disability. Regardless of the causes, the skeletal muscle is the main organ affected by developing sarcopenia. In the first section of the manuscript, as an introduction, we review

Cancer sarcopenia is highly prevalent in patients with advanced cancer, which is closely related to the disease prognosis. Overcoming cancer sarcopenia is important for cancer treatment. Cystine and theanine (CT), antioxidant amino acids, have been applied to the nutritional intervention of various diseases but their effects remain unclear on cancer sarcopenia. We attempt to examine the effect of CT on cancer sarcopenia. Both mouse and in vitro cachexia models showed that CT reduced oxidative stress, inhibited autophagy and apoptosis, improved oxidative phosphorylation and the suppression of h

Menopause, an extremely delicate phase in a woman's life, is characterized by a drop in estrogen levels. This decrease has been associated with the onset of several diseases, including postmenopausal osteoporosis and sarcopenia, which often coexist in the same person, leading to an increased risk of fractures, morbidity, and mortality. To date, there are no approved pharmacological treatments for sarcopenia, while not all of those approved for postmenopausal osteoporosis are beneficial to muscles. In recent years, research has focused on the field of myokines, cytokines, or peptides secreted b

Malnutrition frequently affects patients with alcoholic liver disease (ALD), with important impacts on disease prognosis. Sarcopenia, the clinical phenotype of malnutrition characterized by skeletal muscle loss, is the major component responsible for adverse events in this population. The aim of this study is to assess the use of ultrasound (US) skeletal muscle performance in stratifying ALD disease severity. We recruited 43 patients with ALD and divided them into two groups: alcoholic hepatitis (AH) and alcoholic cirrhosis (AC). We evaluated disease-specific clinical and biological parameters

With advancing age, the skeletal muscle phenotype is characterized by a progressive loss of mass, strength, and quality. This phenomenon, known as sarcopenia, has a negative impact on quality of life and increases the risk of morbidity and mortality in older adults. Accumulating evidence suggests that damaged and dysfunctional mitochondria play a critical role in the pathogenesis of sarcopenia. Lifestyle modifications, such as physical activity, exercise, and nutrition, as well as medical interventions with therapeutic agents, are effective in the management of sarcopenia and offer solutions t

Patients with gynecologic cancers are at risk for malnutrition, cancer cachexia, and sarcopenia. Accumulating data supports that malnourished patients with gynecologic cancer have worse overall survival, increased healthcare utilization and costs, and a higher incidence of postoperative complications and treatment toxicity than those who are not malnourished. Malnutrition is defined as insufficient energy intake, leading to altered body composition and subsequent impaired physical and cognitive function, and can result in sarcopenia and cachexia, defined as the loss of lean body mass and loss

A single-centre cross-sectional study was performed to investigate the potential association between the presence of sarcopenia and fracture patterns in patients with a proximal femoral fracture. We identified all consecutive patients who were admitted due to proximal femoral fracture. The patient's demographic data and the presence of sarcopenia were assessed. The presence of sarcopenia was investigated preoperatively according to EWGSOP2 criteria using the SARC-F questionnaire and the hand grip strength test. According to the presence of sarcopenia, two groups were formed and analysed. We id
