The hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis mediates stress responses in fish. Previous work showed that dietary supplementation with B vitamins attenuated cortisol response to acute stress, whereas dietary genistein produced high basal levels of cortisol and altered stress responsiveness. In the present study, we investigated the expression of key genes of the HPI axis and selected hepatic targets to better characterize these responses. Cortisol was correlated with nr3c1 expression in the pituitary of control fish. Conversely, B vitamins supplementation was associated with changes in the

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are highly conserved small molecules present in various organisms, including fish. In gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), one hamp1 and 15 hamp2 genes have been identified. This study aimed to characterize two novel hamp2 genes, hamp2.0 and hamp2.15, located on chromosome 17 of the gilthead seabream genome. Evolutionary analysis revealed that orthologs of both genes first appeared in the Clupeocephala clade 229 million years ago. In silico analysis predicted that the mature peptides, Hamp2α and Hamp2Ω, possess antimicrobial properties. Both peptides exhibited bacte

Fish NK-lysin (NKL), an orthologous to human granulysin, exerts a dual role as an antimicrobial peptide (AMP) and as a direct executor of T cytotoxic and natural killer cells during the cell-mediated cytotoxic (CMC) response. Although its best-known function is as AMP against bacteria, recent studies point to a special role of NKL in antiviral responses. Nodavirus (NNV) is a spreading threat in Mediterranean aquaculture. In this study, we have identified and compared the expression pattern of European sea bass and gilthead seabream NKL and evaluated its transcription in different tissues and i

The displacement of species from equatorial latitudes to temperate locations following the increase in sea surface temperatures is among the significant reported consequences of climate change. Shifts in the distributional ranges of species result in fish communities tropicalisation, i.e., high latitude colonisations by typically low latitude distribution species. These movements create new interactions between species and new trophic assemblages. The Senegal seabream, Diplodus bellottii, may be used as a model to understand the population genetics of these invasions. In the last decades, this

Due to their direct antiviral activity, Mx proteins play a main role in the response mediated by type I interferon against viral infections. The study on gilthead seabream Mx proteins is especially interesting, since this species is unusually resistant to viral diseases, being asymptomatic carrier of several viruses pathogenic to other fish species. Gilthead seabream has three Mx proteins (Mx1, Mx2 and Mx3) that, separately, display antiviral activity against a wide range of viruses, showing interesting differences in their antiviral specificities. In this work, the possible synergy between th

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is an important neuropeptide in the reproductive system. Although GnRH analogues have been used to artificially spawn pompano (Trachinotus sp.), the native forms of GnRH have not been described in this species. In this study three GnRH subtypes [sea bream GnRH (sbGnRH), chicken GnRH-Ⅱ (cGnRH-Ⅱ) and salmon GnRH (sGnRH)] were identified in pompano (Trachinotus ovatus). cgnrh-Ⅱ and sgnrh were mainly expressed in the brain of male and female fish, showing a tissue-specific expression pattern, while sbgnrh was expressed at different transcriptional levels in al

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are considered as key sensors to trigger the host's innate immune system and adaptive immune responses by recognizing various PAMPs and initiating signal transduction. TLR9, as a member of TLR family, mediates the recognition of unmethylated CpG dinucleotide motifs commonly found in both bacterial and viral genomes. In the current study, the TLR9 gene was isolated from one of flatfish species, half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis). In the 4588 bp genomic sequence, three exons, two introns, and 5' UTR of 23 bp and 3' UTR of 342 bp were identified. Putative

The present study was focused on the morphology of the diencephalic nuclei (likely involved in reproductive functions) as well as on the distribution of GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) in the rhinencephalon, telencephalon and the diencephalon of the brain of bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) by means of immunohistochemistry. Bluefin tuna has an encephalization quotient (QE) similar to that of other large pelagic fish. Its brain exhibits well-developed optic tecta and corpus cerebelli. The diencephalic neuron cell bodies involved in reproductive functions are grouped in two main nuclei: the

The preservation of fish fillets during storage and distribution remains challenging due to microbial spoilage and quality deterioration. This study validated the industrial-scale application of plasma-activated water (PAW) and plasma-activated ice (PAI) on sea bream fillets, building on previous laboratory-scale findings. PAW was generated using a CAP helium jet (H₂O₂: 30.6 mg/L, NO₃-: 25.0 mg/L), while PAI was produced by freezing diluted PAW (H₂O₂: 3.8 mg/L) to reproduce lab-scale conditions. Two industrial-scale procedures were applied: (i) fillets immersed in PAW for 10 min and packed wit

BACKGROUND: With the increasing use of high-fat diet (HFD), fatty liver has become prevalent in farmed fish. Leucine regulates lipid metabolism via multiple pathways, but its role in hepatic lipotoxic injury remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the molecular mechanism responsible for alleviation of HFD-induced liver injury by dietary supplementation with leucine in black seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii).
METHODS: In vivo, juvenile black seabream (male; 1.25 ± 0.01 g) were fed 1 of 5 diets in triplicate (30 fish/replicate, n = 3) for 8-wk. The diets consisted of Contro

Background and Clinical Significance: Ingestion of foreign bodies may lead to perforation of the gastrointestinal tract in its various segments. This may be accompanied by infections of the mediastinum after esophageal perforations and peritonitis after perforations of the stomach and bowel. Case Presentation: A 64-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of abdominal pain and fever. The laboratory testing showed increased indices of inflammation. A CT scan of the abdomen revealed perforation of the stomach pylorus wall from a foreign body. Additionally, there were imaging findings su

Aquaculture located in urban river estuaries, where other anthropogenic activities may occur, has an impact on and may be affected by the environment where they are inserted, namely by the exchange of antimicrobial resistance genes. The latter may ultimately, through the food chain, represent a source of resistance genes to the human resistome. In an exploratory study of the presence of resistance genes in aquaculture sediments located in urban river estuaries, two machine learning models were applied to predict the source of 34 resistome observations in the aquaculture sediments of oysters an

The short mackerel (Rastrelliger brachysoma) is one of the most economically important fish in Thailand; it is also a prime candidate for mariculture but unfortunately is plagued by reproductive problems that cause low production of gametes in captivity. An understanding of how the brain, pituitary, and gonad axis (BPG) from the neuroendocrine system are involved in the reproductive activity of wild and captive R. brachysoma should help clarify the situation. In this study, we investigated changes in the sea bream gonadotropin-releasing hormone (sbGnRH)-gonadotropin (GTH) system in the female

Three different immunoglobulin (Ig) isotypes can be found in teleost fish, IgM, IgD, and the teleost-specific IgT. IgM is considered to have a systemic activity, and IgT is attributed a mucosal role, similar to mammalian IgA. In this study, the complete sequence of gilthead sea bream IgM and IgT in their membrane (m) and soluble (s) forms are described for the first time in a perciform fish. Their constitutive gene expression is analyzed in different tissues, and their regulation upon viral, bacterial, parasitic, mucosal vaccination and dietary challenges are studied. GCB IgM and IgT have the

Contamination of the ocean by heavy metals may have ecosystem-wide implications because they are toxic even if present in trace levels, and the relative ease of their bioaccumulation by marine organisms may affect human health, primarily through consumption of contaminated fish. We evaluated metal concentrations in six different popular edible fish species and estimated the potential health risks from consumption of contaminated fish. There was no correlation between fish length and average metal accumulation although the fish species tended to accumulate significantly more Al and Zn (P < 0.05

Increasing evidence indicates that viral infections can disrupt iron metabolism, thereby contributing to the onset and progression of viral infection-related diseases. Ferritin exerts immunosuppressive and proinflammatory functions during viral infection. Previous integrated transcriptomics and proteomics analyses, aimed at elucidating the resistance mechanisms of Larimichthys crocea against large yellow croaker iridovirus (LYCIV), have suggested that ferritin middle-subunit may confer a potential advantage. To elucidate the immunity-protecting roles of ferritin middle-subunit from large yello

Mercury compounds exert toxic effects via interaction with many vital enzymes involved in antioxidant regulation, such as selenoenzymes thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Selenium supplementation can reactivate the mercury-inhibited TrxR and recover the cell viability in vitro. To gain an insight on how selenium supplementation affects mercury toxicity in vertebrates, we investigated the effects of selenium on the mercury accumulation and TrxR and GPx activities in a fish model. Juvenile zebra-seabreams were exposed either to methylmercury (MeHg) or inorganic mercur

The effects of food deprivation on the hepatic level growth hormone receptor (GHR) were investigated in black seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegeli) both at the protein level (by radioreceptor assay) and at the mRNA level (by ribonuclease protection assay). Serum levels of growth hormone (GH) and triiodothyronine (T(3)) were also measured. Condition factor and hepatic proximate composition of the fish were also assessed. Significant decrease in hepatic GHR binding was recorded as early as on day 2 of starvation. On day 30 this decrease was even more pronounced, with the level in the starved fish r

Three parasitic copepods (Siphonostomatoida) belonging to three different genera were recovered from marine fishes of Iraq, and are listed here as new records. The sea lice Caligus epinepheli Yamaguti, 1936 (Caligidae) was collected from the Japanese threadfin bream, Nemipterus japonicus (Bloch). It had been frequently reported from teleost fishes around the world. The second record, comprising male and female, was another caligid, rarely caught from fishes - Hermilius longicornis Bassett-Smith, 1898, collected from the giant catfish, Netuma thalassina (Rüppell). This paper features the first

BACKGROUND: The European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), one of the most extensively cultured species in European aquaculture productions, is, along with the gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata), a prospective model species for the Perciformes which includes several other commercially important species. Massive mortalities may be caused by bacterial or viral infections in intensive aquaculture production. Revealing transcripts involved in immune response and studying their relative expression enhances the understanding of the immune response mechanism and consequently also the creation of vaccin
