Avenanthramides are characteristic constituents of oat seeds. We analyzed the methanol extract of oat seeds by HPLC and detected three compounds 1, 2, and 3 eluted at retention times similar to avenanthramides. The three compounds were purified by column chromatography and HPLC. Spectroscopic analyses of 1, 2, and 3 suggested that they are amides of 4,5-dihydroxyanthranilic acid with caffeic, p-coumaric, and ferulic acids, respectively. These glycosides of cycads are considered pseudocyanogenic with little potential to liberate hydrogen cyanide as other cyanogenic glycosides do. We present an unusual case of a port site tumor from a colonic adenocarcinoma following laparoscopic cholecystectomy. A 66-year-old woman with a previous renal transplant underwent elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy for symptomatic cholelithiasis. A sunflower-based feed supplement grossly contaminated with the seed of a Datura sp. resulted in severe signs of poisoning in 2 horses. One horse died peracutely of acute gastric dilatation and rupture following ingestion of the contaminated feed. The 2nd horse developed unresponsive paralytic ileus that led to euthanasia. Examination of the feed and gastrointestinal contents of both horses showed a high proportion of the characteristic Datura sp. seeds. The clinical signs and pathology in both cases were consistent with intoxication by the parasympatholytic alkaloid components of Datura sp.

Human infections due to Aspergillosis Fungi are unusual and occur preferentially in defenseless patients. Nonetheless, our patient, a seed-shop owner, was not immuno-depressed and became infected by inhaling or chewing the seeds. Moreover, the aspergillosis was situated in the sphenoidal sinus, which is extremely unusual. In fact, the initial pseudo tumoral and misleading appearance justified a surgical biopsy which revealed a black "truffle" suggestive of aspergillosis and was confirmed by anatomo-pathology.
