Self-assessment and characteristics of mixed depression in the French national EPIDEP study.

BACKGROUND: Studies on mixed depression have been conducted so far on the basis of DSM-IV manic symptoms, i.e., a list of 7 symptoms which may provide limited information on the subsyndromal features associated with a full depressive episode. METHODS: As part of the EPIDEP National Multisite French Study of 493 consecutive DSM-IV major depressive patients evaluated in at least two semi-structured interviews 1 month apart, 102 (23.8%) were classified as mixed depressives (≥3 hypomanic symptoms), and 146 (34%) as pure depressives (0 hypomanic symptom), after exclusion of bipolar I patients; hyp

Self and peer assessment - does it make a difference to student group work?

The use of group projects as an assessment strategy is increasing in popularity in education. However problems can arise if members of the group do not contribute equally to the process and required outcome. Self and peer assessment has been advocated as one means of overcoming the problem of ;free riders'. A review of the literature would suggest that the vast majority of research in the area of self and peer assessment has been carried out in disciplines other than nursing and midwifery. This paper provides a brief overview on the available literature on self and peer assessment and reports

An assessment of self-reported disease classification in epidemiological studies of dry eye.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the reliability of self-reported dry eye disease status and patient-related predictors of misclassification in contact lens wearers. METHODS: Patients completed the Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire (CLDEQ) short form on two occasions. Test-retest reliability of the CLDEQ composite score was determined using the 95% limits of agreement (LoA) and an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The kappa statistic was used to determine reliability of disease-classification-based CLDEQ composite score cutoff points. Predictors of misclassification were determined by multivaria

Computerized history and self-assessment questionnaire for diagnostic screening among patients with dementia.

In order to standardize and quantify diagnostic information derived from medical histories and case reports given by demented patients, their families or care-providers, a questionnaire has been developed containing 94 questions. The output is categorized by computer into graphic clinical scales which correlate and weigh information relating to seven of the most common causes of dementia. The present investigation assesses the validity of predictive diagnostic classifications derived from the clinical scales tested on admission by correlating them later with final diagnoses determined independ

[Perceptions of the disease and self-assessment of the quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease].

UNLABELLED: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive, multisystem neurodegenerative disease that significantly affects patients' quality of life. The perception of the disease plays a crucial role in the psychological adaptation of patients. The poorly studied relationship between the self-assessment of the disease, neuropsychiatric disorders (depression, anxiety, apathy, cognitive disorders), and the quality of life of patients emphasizes the need for further research in this area. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship of the perceptions of the disease with motor, cognitive, emotional imp

Bleeding self-assessments by patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP): An agreement study.

We designed anagreement study to compare the results of bleeding assessments done in tandem by ITP patients and trained research staff. We used a modified version of the ITP Bleeding Scale, which captured the patients' worst bleeding event at any of nine anatomical sites since the time of the last assessment. Interrater agreement was determined using the 2-way kappa for the assessment of severe vs. non-severe bleeds. We analyzed 108 consecutive patients with ITP from the McMaster ITP Registry who had duplicate bleeding assessments. Two-way agreement was excellent for gynecological (k = 0.86, 9

Assessing Self-Concept in Children (Aged 5-7) with Functional Dyslalia.

Language not only plays a powerful role in human life, as it is also a crucial factor in our minds. It shapes our personality, memory and even the way in which we see the world, as well as playing a fundamental role in the building of self-concept and self-esteem. Having a good self-concept, that is, knowing one's own qualities and strengths, will, in turn, promote good self-esteem. The aim of this research was to analyze self-concept in 50 children (aged 5-7) with functional dyslalia in the city of Granada (Spain). A quantitative approach was taken, with a non-experimental design; it was desc
