OBJECTIVES: The diagnosis of vestibular neurolabyrinthitis is based on the sudden appearance of vertigo that lasts for hours or days without … knowledge, these are the first reported cases in which selective damage to the lateral and superior semicircular canals and their nerves caused by neurolabyrinthitis was demonstrated clinically. Our clinical results indicate that the damage can be selective for specific vestibular end organs.

Endolymphatic mastoid shunt surgery (EMSS) is widely performed in patients with medically intractable Meniere's disease. Although many patients report an improvement of symptoms after surgery, the mechanisms which are responsible for the relief of complaints are not known. To date, only few studies exist which studied the influence of EMSS on vestibular function. The present study examines the effect of EMSS on saccule function by measuring vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and the effect on lateral semicircular canal function by sinusoidal harmonic acceleration (SHA) testing. No changes i

We report a case of bilateral superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) in a 38-year-old man who presented with congenital hearing loss without vestibular symptoms. This case is unusual due to the association of SSCD with multiple congenital anomalies of the external, middle, and inner ears, but without any other craniofacial or systemic developmental anomalies. Findings of multiple malformations of temporal bone structures in this case lend support to the theory that SSCD may have an underlying developmental or congenital etiology.

OBJECTIVES: (1) To develop a cadaveric temporal-bone preparation to study the mechanism of hearing loss resulting from superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SCD) and (2) to assess the potential usefulness of clinical measurements of umbo velocity for the diagnosis of SCD.
BACKGROUND: The syndrome of dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal is a clinical condition encompassing a variety of vestibular and auditory symptoms, including an air-bone gap at low frequencies. It has been hypothesized that the dehiscence acts as a "third window" into the inner ear that shunts acoustic energy awa

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous nystagmus caused by dorsolateral medullary infarction may be of vestibular origin.
OBJECTIVES: To test if imbalance of the central pathways of the semicircular canals contributes to spontaneous nystagmus in dorsolateral medullary syndrome.
METHODS: We examined four patients with dorsolateral medullary syndrome and recorded spontaneous nystagmus binocularly at gaze straight ahead with the three-dimensional search coil technique. The median slow phase velocity of the nystagmus was analysed in the light and in the dark, and the normalised velocity axes were compared with…

Aim of the work was to describe a new physical therapeutic approach for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo determined by canalolithiasis of the lateral semicircular canal. A review is made of the literature, and personal experience is reported. A total of 55 cases were observed, 40 geotropic forms, 15 apogeotropic forms. Liberatory manoeuvres were carried out observing the nystagmus during videonystagmoscopic examination, thus attempting to solve the problem in the first treatment session. Monitoring the patient under videonystagmoscopic examination, progression of the otolithic mass towards

A case of left horizontal-canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (HC-BPPV) in a woman with a 7-year history of episodic vertigo when turning over in bed is reported. The diagnosis was established with the patient lying down with her head raised 30 degrees with respect to the horizontal plane. Treatment with positional maneuvers (270 degrees contralateral head rotation in 3 steps) resolved the attacks. Positional testing failed to elicit symptoms 7 days, 14 days, 1 month, and 2 months after treatment. Four months after treatment, the patient remains asymptomatic. Published cases of HC-BPPV

The responses to rapid, passive, unpredictable, low amplitude (10-20 degrees), high acceleration (3,000-4,000 degrees/s2) head rotations were used to study the human vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in pitch and yaw plane after unilateral posterior semicircular canal occlusion (uPCO) in 10 subjects. The results from these 10 uPCO subjects were compared with those from 18 normal subjects. The VOR gains at a head velocity of 200 degrees/s in the uPCO subjects were: pitch upward = 0.62 +/- 0.06, pitch downward = 0.87 +/- 0.11, yew ipsilesion = 0.78 +/- 0.06, yaw contralesion = 0.79 +/- 0.10 and in n

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common condition which is usually self-limiting. Surgical treatment is rarely required and for many years the mainstay of such treatment has been singular neurectomy (posterior ampullary nerve section). A new operation has recently been described for the treatment of BPPV involving occlusion of the posterior semicircular canal. We have performed this operation on five patients with intractable BPPV and report our results with follow up of between 12 and 36 months from operation. The excellent results of posterior semicircular canal occlusion whi

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The complex anatomy of the petrous part of the temporal bone (or petrous temporal bone) is difficult to understand and constitutes a challenge in the daily diagnostic routine even for experienced neuroradiologists. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is an integral part of equipment-based diagnostics of the rare entity of posterior semicircular canal dehiscence (PSCD). PSCD is characterised by an absence of the bony cover of the posterior semicircular canal in the petrous temporal bone. The aim of this study is to verify the prevalence of PSCD in a group of patie
