Sensation seeking in a community sample of French gamblers: Comparison between strategic and non-strategic gamblers.

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between sensation seeking and gambling disorder (GD) in a community sample of gamblers (when controlling for the effect of substance use, gender and age) and see whether sensation seeking scores depend on the gambling activity when comparing strategic and non-strategic gamblers. A total of 380 gamblers was recruited. First, pathological gamblers (PGs) (n =143) were compared to non-pathological gamblers (NPGs) (n =237). Second, strategic gamblers (n =93) were compared to non-strategic gamblers (n =110). Sociodemographic data, gambling

Borderline Personality Disorder as a Predictor of Drug Use Variety: Cognitive Vs. Affective Mechanisms.

Borderline personality disorder has been identified as a risk factor for polydrug use. Despite this, there remains a lack of understanding of which characteristics of the disorder provide the mechanisms for this relationship. This study examined a set of constructs as mechanisms explaining the borderline personality disorder-polydrug use relationship that are divided into affective and cognitive categories. The Pathways to Desistance data were used in analyses. Generalized structural equation modeling was used to examine the direct relationship between borderline personality disorder and test

Genetic aspects of pain and its variability in the human population.

The sensation of pain is common to both animals and human beings. Its threshold, intensity, tolerability, and characteristics are variable and depend on ethnicity, gender, stress exposure, co-existing mental disorders, such as depression or anxiety, social and economical background, as well as on genetic factors. It is estimated that about 5 and 20 percent of population suffer from acute and chronic pain, respectively, which results in the search for medical advice in healthcare facilities, and causes great expenses in health care budgets worldwide. Research aimed at identifying the causative

Substance Use in Young Swiss Men: The Interplay of Perceived Social Support and Dispositional Characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Social environment plays a central role in substance use behaviors. However, it is not clear whether its role varies as a function of individual dispositional characteristics. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the interaction between dispositional characteristics (i.e. sensation seeking, anxiety/neuroticism) and social environment (i.e. perceived social support [PSS]) in association with substance use. METHODS: A representative sample of 5,377 young Swiss males completed a questionnaire assessing substance use, sensation seeking, anxiety/neuroticism, and PSS from friends and from a sign

Processes of therapeutic change: Results from the Cornell-Penn Study of Psychotherapies for Panic Disorder.

To examine process of changes in two distinct psychotherapies-cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and Panic-Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (PFPP). Two hypothesized processes of change-misinterpretation of bodily sensations and Panic Specific Reflective Function (PSRF)-were tested in the CBT and PFPP arms of the Cornell-Penn Study of Psychotherapies for Panic Disorder. The Brief Bodily Sensations Interpretation Questionnaire (BBSIQ) measures misinterpretation of bodily sensations-a focus of CBT interventions. PSRF, a target of PFPP, assesses the capacity to reflect on the underlying meaning

Hereditary myelopathies.

Hereditary myelopathies comprise a diverse group of disorders whose signs and symptoms include progressive spasticity, limb ataxia without additional cerebellar signs, impaired vibration and positional sensation, and a variable degree of neurogenic weakness, all suggesting spinal cord impairment. Recent progress in the understanding of hereditary myelopathies has revealed that many are systemic processes with widespread axonal degeneration. However, the concept of hereditary myelopathies remains clinically helpful in differentiating hereditary myelopathies from other potentially treatable myel

[Dizziness and anxiety disorders in the elderly].

Perhaps each dizzy patient feels anxiety. Varying emotional disorders are particularly common in elderly patients with dizziness. The causes of the frequent concurrence of dizziness and mental disorders (anxiety and depression) are diverse. Amongst these there are two chief conditions: 1) vestibular vertigo may cause anxiety to a greater extent than many other symptoms; 2) anxiety and depression are themselves frequently manifested by the sensations resembling vestibular ones that patients are inclined to call dizziness. On the contrary, anxiety may appear in some cases as the sensations resem

The Decline of Sensory-Motility Coordination in Rectal Evacuation due to Pelvic Floor Dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Constipation, a common defecatory disorder, exhibits various symptoms and individual variability. Abnormalities in rectal sensation and/or motility are prevalent among patients. However, the mechanisms linking rectal sensation and motility, and their impact on rectal evacuation function, remain poorly understood. METHODS: Our study gathered data from 154 chronic constipation patients, including rectal sensation and motility, electromyography, motor evoked potentials, defecography, and balloon expulsion test. The aim was to investigate the association between rectal sensation and m

How Processing of Sensory Information From the Internal and External Worlds Shape the Perception and Engagement With the World in the Aftermath of Trauma: Implications for PTSD.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is triggered by an individual experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, often precipitating persistent flashbacks and severe anxiety that are associated with a fearful and hypervigilant presentation. Approximately 14-30% of traumatized individuals present with the dissociative subtype of PTSD, which is often associated with repeated or childhood trauma. This presentation includes symptoms of depersonalization and derealization, where individuals may feel as if the world or self is "dream-like" and not real and/or describe "out-of-body" experiences. Capturing Phenotypic Heterogeneity in Differentiated Sensory Processing Profiles: Non-Syndromic Autism and Fragile X Syndrome.

Proficient sensory processing affords adaptive responses required for daily functioning. Sensory processing differences are common across neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDDs), including autism and fragile X syndrome (FXS), and, in some cases, associated with challenging behaviors. Although sensory processing differences are common in both autism and FXS, little is known about possible variation as a function of genetic etiology, or autism classification. This study characterized sensory processing features and examined associations between these features and challenging behavior in 102 male

Visual processing in genetic conditions linked to autism: A behavioral study of binocular rivalry in individuals with 16p11.2 deletions and age-matched controls.

Close phenotypic characterization of individuals with genetic conditions linked to autism provides a promising approach to navigating the heterogeneity of autism spectrum conditions. The current study investigated sensory processing in individuals with a rare genetic event that is highly penetrant for autism, 16p11.2 deletions, using a well-characterized visual paradigm, binocular rivalry, which is thought to be a non-invasive index of excitatory/inhibitory balance in the visual cortex. We characterized rivalry dynamics in 45 adolescent and adult individuals (19 individuals with 16p11.2 deleti

Neurophysiology of dystonia: The role of inhibition.

The pathophysiology of dystonia has been best studied in patients with focal hand dystonia. A loss of inhibitory function has been demonstrated at spinal, brainstem and cortical levels. Many cortical circuits seem to be involved. One consequence of the loss of inhibition is a failure of surround inhibition, and this appears to directly lead to overflow and unwanted muscle spasms. There are mild sensory abnormalities and deficits in sensorimotor integration; these also might be explained by a loss of inhibition. Increasing inhibition may be therapeutic. A possible hypothesis is that there is a

Loss of urinary voiding sensation due to herpes zoster.

A case of sacral herpes zoster infection in a 56-year-old man with the complication of loss of urinary voiding sensation is presented. He had typical herpes zoster eruption on the left S2 dermatome, hypalgesia of the S1-S4 dermatomes, and absence of urinary voiding sensation. There was no other urinary symptom at the first medical examination. Urinary complications associated with herpes zoster are uncommon, but two types, acute cystitis and acute retention, have been recognized. No cases of loss of urinary voiding sensation due to herpes zoster have been reported. In this case, hypalgesia of

Chemosensory Systems in COVID-19: Evolution of Scientific Research.

COVID-19 disease induced by coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 presents among its symptoms alterations of the chemosensory functions. In the first studies on the Chinese population, this symptomatology was not particularly relevant, and hyposmia and hypogeusia were excluded from the symptoms to be evaluated to diagnose the disease. With the pandemic spread of the illness, there has been an augment in reports on chemosensory dysfunctions among patients. The first data analysis showed the presence of these disorders mainly in paucisymptomatic and asymptomatic patients. The interest in chemosensory systems t

Effect of sensorial stimulations on postural disturbances related to spatial cognition disorders after stroke.

Balance disorders related to disturbances in perception of spatial reference systems are common especially after right hemispheric stroke. Mental misrepresentation of bodily orientation in space is then often superimposed upon other factors affecting imbalance such as motor and sensory impairments. Traditional rehabilitation for balance recovery has not been specifically designed to improve balance disorders related to spatial cognition. The traditional approach, consisting of stimulating the conscious perception of body orientation in space, is demanding and laborious. The approach based on s

Migraine and migrainous stroke: risk factors and prognosis.

We compared epidemiologic and clinical data from 310 patients with migraine and 30 patients with acute migrainous stroke to identify factors predictive of migrainous stroke and assess the risk of future stroke in these two populations. We found no significant differences in gender ratio or in the frequency of smoking, estrogen use, hypertension, mitral valve prolapse, or family history of migraine between the two groups. A history of migraine with aura was significantly more common in the migrainous stroke group (24 of 30 [80%] versus 142 of 310 [46%]; p < 0.001), as was a history of prior str

The roles of interoceptive sensitivity and metacognitive interoception in panic.

BACKGROUND: Interoception refers to the ability to sense body signals. Two interoceptive dimensions have been recently proposed: (a) interoceptive sensitivity (IS) -objective accuracy in detecting internal bodily sensations (e.g., heartbeat, breathing)-; and (b) metacognitive interoception (MI) -explicit beliefs and worries about one's own interoceptive sensitivity and internal sensations. Current models of panic assume a possible influence of interoception on the development of panic attacks. Hypervigilance to body symptoms is one of the most characteristic manifestations of panic disorders.

Development and psychometric evaluation of a brief version of the hyperventilation questionnaire: the HVQ-B.

The fear of arousal sensations characterizes some anxiety disorders and is a core feature of an established risk factor for anxiety and related disorders (i.e. anxiety sensitivity; Taylor, 1999). Anxiety sensitivity (AS) refers to a fear of anxiety-related bodily sensations stemming from beliefs that these have catastrophic consequences. Interoceptive exposure (IE; repeated exposure to feared arousal sensations) has been shown to decrease AS. The 33-item Hyperventilation Questionnaire (HVQ; Rapee & Medoro, 1994) measures state levels of cognitive, affective, and somatic responses to IE and aro
