[Olfactory stimulation and contingent negative variation (CNV) (author's transl)].

In addition to olfactory evoked responses (Fig. 1a) the vertex-negative voltage shift was registered in 20 normal adults. Fig. 2 shows this potential for an olfactory indicative stimulus followed by a tone burst or flash sequence, which are stopped by the test person's manual reaction. In Fig. 3 two alternating odorous stimuli are presented, one of which is followed by the tone. The selective expectancy wave is followed by the tone. The selective expectancy wave is only built up by the marked olfactory stimulus. For the first time CNV can be used as a clinical investigation tool to confirm cen

The influence of priming and pre-existing knowledge of chemotherapy-associated cognitive complaints on the reporting of such complaints in breast cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: Many cancer patients report cognitive changes following chemotherapy. In social psychology, there is ample evidence that psychological and physical complaints can increase with increased accessibility of relevant schemata. The accessibility of related concepts in memory may be facilitated through priming or by pre-existing knowledge, resulting in an increase of reported complaints. We examined whether pre-existing knowledge of chemotherapy-associated cognitive problems and priming the 'chemo-brain' schema increase the reporting of cognitive complaints. METHODS: Two hundred and sixt

Effects of acute restraint stress on set-shifting and reversal learning in male rats.

Exposure to acute stress alters cognition; however, few studies have examined the effects of acute stress on executive functions such as behavioral flexibility. The goal of the present experiments was to determine the effects of acute periods of stress on two distinct forms of behavioral flexibility: set-shifting and reversal learning. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained and tested in an operant-chamber-based task. Some of the rats were exposed to acute restraint stress (30 min) immediately before either the set-shifting test day or the reversal learning test day. Acute stress had no effect

The self-fulfilling prophecy as an intrafamily dynamic.

This research examined whether parents' and children's perceptions of one another have reciprocal self-fulfilling effects on each other's behavior. Parents and their adolescent children completed self-report surveys and engaged in dyadic videotaped interaction tasks. The surveys assessed mothers', fathers', and children's perceptions of their own and the other's hostility and warmth. Observers coded the videotaped interactions to assess the actual hostility and warmth exhibited by parents and children. Data from 658 mother-child dyads were consistent with the conclusion that children had a sel

How children experience brief-exposure treatment of specific phobias.

Examined how 56 children who had received brief-exposure treatment for specific phobias experienced the treatment. It was also investigated whether there was a relation between the children's reported experiences before, during, and after the treatment and therapy outcome. Results indicated that the treatment was experienced as something positive, and the large majority of the children appreciated the pace and degree of control they had during treatment, as well as the therapist and the treatment outcome. The response patterns did not differ between sexes, diagnostic groups, mode of treatment,

A treatment outline for agoraphobia. The Quality Assurance Project.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists has initiated a project to develop treatment outlines for various psychiatric disorders. It is envisaged that the present outline, which was developed by a project team and an expert committee may be modified by the College before being used in post graduate and continuing education and in peer review. In its present form it should be of use to practising psychiatrists. Comments and criticisms on this outline are welcome. A loose-leaf insert is included so that interested readers may respond, either directly to the project team or i

Lived Experiences and Coping Strategies of Newly Recruited ICU Nurses in a Resource-Constrained Hospital in Ghana.

AIM: To explore the lived experiences and coping strategies of newly recruited intensive care unit (ICU) nurses in a resource-constrained setting in Accra, Ghana. DESIGN: An exploratory, descriptive qualitative study was conducted. METHODS: We purposively recruited 12 newly recruited nurses from the ICUs of a teaching hospital in Accra. The participants were interviewed using a pilot-tested interview guide. The interviews were audio-taped, transcribed verbatim, and analysed using thematic analysis with the aid of Nvivo 11. RESULTS/FINDINGS: The main themes identified were experiences and co

Collective coping work among healthcare providers navigating the precarities of an overburdened maternity facility in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

This study examines collective coping among birth attendants, managers, and pregnant women in an overburdened urban maternity facility in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Drawing on three months of ethnographic research (from April to July 2021), including participant observations and interviews with purposively selected participants, we explore how birth attendants navigate systemic challenges in a low-resource setting. Using thematic network analysis, we found that collective coping involved modifying care practices, reconfiguring spaces, and fostering collaboration with managers, pregnant women, an

Functional MRI with a set-shifting task in adolescent anorexia nervosa: A cross-sectional and follow-up study.

Studies of set-shifting in adolescent AN present conflicting results, since not all have found differences with regard to controls. To date, no functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) studies have been carried out in adolescent patients, nor have patients been assessed after weight recovery. In this study, 30 female AN patients aged 12-17 and 16 matched control subjects were assessed both at baseline and after six months and renutrition using a structured diagnostic interview, clinical and neurocognitive scales, and fMRI during a set-shifting task. Adolescent AN patients presented similar

Daytime rumination as a feature of Insomnia Disorder: sleep related cognition is not merely a problem of the night.

Night-time sleep related cognitions have been shown to play a perpetuating role in insomnia. According to the cognitive model of insomnia day time cognitions (i.e. worry, rumination, etc.) may also contribute to it. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible role of daytime sleep-related rumination in Insomnia Disorder (n= 55, mean age 49.7±16.7 years), Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) (n=33, mean age 58.1±10.2 years) and healthy subjects (n=33, mean age 49.8±13.9), using a set of sleep related variables which included the Daytime Insomnia Symptom Response Scale (DISRS), the

Contamination and harm relevant UCS-expectancy bias in spider phobic individuals: influence of treatment.

Phobic individuals expect aversive UCS's following encounters with phobic stimuli. Previous research using a thought-experiment procedure showed that contamination rather than harm-related outcome expectancies differentiated best between high and low spider fearful undergraduates. This study investigated the alleged role of these UCS-expectancy biases in the maintenance of phobic complaints. First, this study sought to replicate these earlier findings in a community sample of high spider fearful individuals who applied for treatment (n = 60) and a sample of low spider fear controls (n = 30). Stuck in a rut: perseverative response tendencies and the neuroticism-distress relationship.

Clinical views of neuroticism-linked distress often make reference to the perseverative sorts of mental processes that reinforce such experiences. The goal of the present 7 studies, involving 488 undergraduate participants, was to directly examine such perseverative processes. Individual differences in response perseveration were operationalized in terms of choice reaction time difficulties switching (vs. repeating) responses across consecutive trials. Response perseveration interacted with neuroticism in predicting negative emotion, dissatisfaction with life, and displays of negative emotion

Explaining the paradoxical effects of poverty on risk taking: The Desperation Threshold Model.

The impacts of poverty and material scarcity on human decision making appear paradoxical. One set of findings associates poverty with risk aversion, whilst another set associates it with risk taking. We present an idealised rational-choice model, the Desperation Threshold Model (DTM), that explains how both these accounts can be correct. The DTM assumes that there are basic needs whose satisfaction is not fully divisible. This generates an S-shaped utility function for material resources. The value of gaining a dollar is at first small (because even with the extra dollar, basic needs still can

Noradrenergic, but not cholinergic, deafferentation of prefrontal cortex impairs attentional set-shifting.

Both norepinephrine and acetylcholine have been shown to be critically involved in mediating attention but there remains debate about whether they serve similar or unique functions. Much of what is known about the role of these neurochemicals in cognition is based on manipulations done at the level of the cell body but these findings are difficult to reconcile with data regarding the unique contribution of cortical subregions, e.g. the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, to attention. In the current study, we directly compared the effects of noradrenergic and cholinergic deafferentation of the rat

Automatic negative evaluation of suffocation sensations in individuals with suffocation fear.

The current study tested whether "suffocation sensations" (respiratory loads) are automatically evaluated in a negative way by people fearing these sensations. It was found that, after having been primed with a slight respiratory load, participants with high suffocation fear (n=15) reacted more quickly to suffocation words and more slowly to positive words than participants with low suffocation fear (n=21). However, the effect was present only in participants who had noticed the primes. The findings are relevant to the cognitive model of panic disorder because automatic negative appraisal of s

Improving credibility of instructions in the balanced placebo design: a misattribution manipulation.

Research using the balanced placebo design seeks to differentiate the physiological and psychological effects of drinking alcohol. Questions regarding the validity of the design center about experimenter instructions, particularly in the antiplacebo cell at higher blood alcohol content (BAC) levels. This study tested the plausibility of two misattribution strategies designed to reduce the conflict between experimenter instructions and internal cues of drunkenness. Forty-two participants (BAC = .055) were told that they received no alcohol, with internal cues of drunkenness said to be produced

Habit control expectancy for drinking, smoking, and eating.

Habit-specific locus of control measures for drinking, smoking, and eating were compared to Rotter's general measure to evaluate the relationship between cognitive expectancy and substance use. For both smoking and eating, individuals who reported being addicted were significantly more external on the habit-specific expectancy measures. Measures of use, tolerance, and risk covaried more closely with the habit-specific scales than with the general scale. For eating behavior, the habit-specific scale and the compulsive eating measure were different only for individuals with a history of being ov

Women's expectations of physicians in sexual health concerns.

This study surveyed 56 women to assess their expectations for the primary care physician to inquire about sexual concerns and to diagnose and treat sexual problems. The study indicates that the physician is the professional most frequently consulted about sexual concerns and that patients expect even more leadership from the physician in raising the issue of sexual health. Women look for empathy, warmth, confidentiality, and professional competence in discussions with their doctor about sexual matters; and they are open to referrals for treatment of sexual problems and physician-sponsored sex

Searching for the right word: Hybrid visual and memory search for words.

In "hybrid search" (Wolfe Psychological Science, 23(7), 698-703, 2012), observers search through visual space for any of multiple targets held in memory. With photorealistic objects as the stimuli, response times (RTs) increase linearly with the visual set size and logarithmically with the memory set size, even when over 100 items are committed to memory. It is well-established that pictures of objects are particularly easy to memorize (Brady, Konkle, Alvarez, & Oliva Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 105, 14325-14329, 2008). Would hybrid-search performance be similar if the tar
