BACKGROUND: Anastomotic blood supply is vital to anastomotic healing. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effect of the left colic artery (LCA) on blood supply in the anastomotic area, explore the relationship between individual differences in the LCA and blood supply in the anastomotic area, and elucidate the relevant indications for LCA retention during radical resection for sigmoid or rectal cancer.
METHOD: Radical sigmoid or rectal cancer resection with LCA retention was performed in 40 patients with colorectal cancer who participated in this study. Systemic pressure, LCA diamete

Invagination in adults is rare compared to children. We experienced 3 sigmoid colon cancers in which symptoms of invagination were discovered. Because the tumors in 2 of the 3 cases could be reduced, operations were electively performed. The tumor in the remaining case could not be reduced and an urgent operation was required. Because all cases responded in the early stage, their postoperative progress was good. Invagination in adults is typically caused by an organic disease, particularly cancer. It is necessary to consider not only reduction of the invagination but also treatment of the prim

The transilluminative occlusive angiotensometry was used for the determination of viability of the sutured segments of the colon in 93 intraabdominal resection for carcinoma. The use of angiotensometry has reduced the incompetence of anastomosis sutures in intraabdominal resections of the rectum and sigmoid colon from 13.6% to 8.6%.

UNLABELLED: Gastrointestinalstromal tumors are rare neoplasms and represent 0,1% to 3% of all gastrointestinal cancers. They are the most frequent mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract with a malignant potential and unpredictable behavior. The synchronous association with other primary gastrointestinal carcinoma has been rarely reported in the literature with increasing number in the last ten years. The associated Gastrointestinalstromal tumor is usually discovered incidentally during surgery for carcinoma. The limited number of these cases cannot confirm the existence of a commo

INTRODUCTION: There is no standard treatment strategy for rectosigmoid cancer because of the diverse definitions of the proximal rectal origin. This study aimed to evaluate sigmoid take-off compared with other landmarks of the rectosigmoid junction in guiding oncological therapy and outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, comparative cohort study included patients diagnosed with rectosigmoid carcinoma at our centre between January 2010 and December 2018. The patients were classified into the neoadjuvant treatment group and upfront surgery group. The oncological outcomes were comp

INTRODUCTION: We report a case of submucosal(SM)adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon which developed distant metastasis 3 months after endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR).
CASE: 54-year-old, male. Colonoscopy, which was performed due to positive fecal occult blood test, revealed 18 mm Isp sigmoid polyp. EMR was performed with en bloc resection. Pathological examination revealed adenocarcinoma(tub>por>sig), pT1b, Ly1c, V1a, pHM0, and pVM1. Therefore, laparoscopic sigmoidectomy(D2 dissection)was performed. Postoperative pathological examination revealed pT1b, pN2b(10/11), PN1b, pPM0, pDM0, pStage

A 66‒year‒old man was admitted to our hospital because of anemia and a positive fecal occult blood test in the medical examination. Colonoscopy revealed a type 2 advanced sigmoid colon cancer with circular stenosis. Computed tomography (CT)colonography was performed to examine the oral colon. The apple core signs were found both in the sigmoid and transverse colon. We diagnosed a double colon cancer and performed a laparoscopic left hemicolectomy and sigmoidectomy. The tumor was histopathologically diagnosed as a multiple cancer including a transverse and a sigmoid colon cancer. Although evalu

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms with variable malignant potential, and gastrointestinal involvement is particularly uncommon. Colonic PEComas are exceedingly rare and may present with nonspecific symptoms, complicating early diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old male presented with prolonged fever, fatigue, and weight loss. Laboratory findings revealed leukocytosis and anemia, while infectious and rheumatologic evaluations were unremarkable. Following rectal bleeding, colonoscopy identified a perforated lesion in the sigmoid colo

Primary colorectal choriocarcinoma is a rare neoplasm. Only 19 cases have been reported worldwide, most of which involved adenocarcinomas. The prognosis is usually poor, and the standard therapy for this tumor has not been established. A 61-year-old woman presented with constipation and lower abdominal discomfort. She was diagnosed with primary adenocarcinoma with focal choriocarcinomatous differentiation in the sigmoid colon and liver metastasis. Because the serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin level was not significantly elevated, and because only focal choriocarcinomatous differentiation

A 63-year-old woman was referred to a breast surgeon with a breast mass discovered incidentally during follow-up study after colon cancer surgery. Invasive adenocarcinoma was revealed on core needle biopsy. Wide excision of the breast including the tumor was performed. On standard histological examination the tumor showed features of moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. The immunohistochemistry study revealed positive results for cytokeratin (CK)20 and CDX2, but negative for CK7. These are typical characteristics for colon cancer. Considering her history of subtotal colectomy for sigmoid

Mesenteric fibromatosis (MF) is a rare benign mesenchymal lesion that can occur throughout the gastrointestinal tract, especially small bowel. Its biological behavior is intermediate between benign fibrous tissue proliferation and malignant fibrosarcoma. In previously reported cases of MF, we could find colonic obstruction or ureter obstruction, but simultaneous involvement of colon and ureter was not able to be seen. We described a patient that presented with colonic obstruction and hydroureteronephrosis due to MF at sigmoid colon which mimicked submucosal tumor such as gastrointestinal tumor

Segmental tuberculosis of the colon is a rare clinical entity. In the absence of pulmonary or ileocecal involvement, colonic tuberculosis may be difficult to differentiate from neoplasm or Crohn's disease by symptomatic and radiological means. Colonoscopy and biopsy can, however, establish the diagnosis and prevent operative intervention, as indicated in the present report. A patient with a radiologically demonstrated strictured lesion of the sigmoid colon was found at colonoscopy to have several hemorrhagic transverse ulcers ranging in diameter between 1-4.5 cm. Multiple target colonoscopic b

The frequency and sites of carcinoma of the sigmoid colon and rectum are discussed. The complications associated with Dixon's anterior resection of the rectum are described, with particular reference to factors affecting cicatrisation of the colic anastomoses, followed by dehiscences and their degree of seriousness. A personal serier for the years 1969 to 1975 is presented and the advantages and disadvantages of derivative colostomy are explained. Comparison with similar series in which colostomy was or was not employed is used to elicit the reasons why it may be regarded as superfluous.
