UNLABELLED: The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is related with the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent spike protein variations have had an effect on the transmission of the virus. In addition to ACE-2, spike proteins can employ DC-SIGN and its analogous receptor, DC-SIGNR, for host evasion. Spike variations in the DC-SIGN interaction region and role of DC-SIGN in immune evasion have not been well defined. To understand the spike protein variations and their binding mode, phylogenetic analysis of the complete GISAID (Global Initiative for Sharing Avian Influenza Data) data

Rapid eye movement sleep is believed to reduce physiological reactivity to emotional experiences. While rapid eye movement sleep fragmentation has been associated with maladaptive emotional processing in clinical and animal models, its causal role has not been experimentally isolated in healthy humans. In this study, we tested whether selectively fragmenting rapid eye movement sleep impairs overnight psychophysiological habituation in healthy individuals, aiming to identify the cortical dynamics involved. Seventeen participants (mean age ± SD, 23.18 ± 3.94, 14 females) completed two counterbal

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the characteristics and occurrence frequencies of rapid eye movements (REMs) during REM sleep in movement disorders.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to detect and characterize REMs during polysomnographically defined REM sleep as recorded by electro-oculography (EOG) in 12 patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), 13 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 12 healthy controls.
METHODS: Using a modified EOG montage, we developed an algorithm that automatically detects and characterizes REMs during REM sleep based on their presumptive saccad

BACKGROUND: Since 2014, there has been increasing public outreach effort regarding isolated/idiopathic rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) in Montreal.
OBJECTIVE: To assess if, over time, milder iRBD cases are presenting earlier.
METHODS: Disease-free survival was compared in two iRBD recruitment epochs: 2004 to 2013 ("earlier") versus 2014to 2022 ("later") and by referral type ("self-referral" vs. "conventional-referral") in three large centers.
RESULTS: In Montreal, among 209 subjects followed prospectively, shorter time to phenoconversion was observed in the earlier e

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Isolated/idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) and Lewy body dementia (LBD) are synucleinopathies that have partial genetic overlap with Parkinson's disease (PD). Previous studies have shown that neuroinflammation plays a substantial role in these disorders. In PD, specific residues of the human leukocyte antigen ( HLA ) were suggested to be associated with a protective effect. This study examined whether the HLA locus plays a similar role in iRBD, LBD and PD.
METHODS: We performed HLA imputation on iRBD genotyping data (1,072 patients and 9,505 controls) an

Synucleinopathies-related disorders such as Lewy body dementia (LBD) and isolated/idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) have been associated with neuroinflammation. In this study, we examined whether the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) locus plays a role in iRBD and LBD. In iRBD, HLA-DRB1*11:01 was the only allele passing FDR correction (OR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.27-1.93, p = 2.70e-05). We also discovered associations between iRBD and HLA-DRB1 70D (OR = 1.26, 95%CI = 1.12-1.41, p = 8.76e-05), 70Q (OR = 0.81, 95%CI = 0.72-0.91, p = 3.65e-04) and 71R (OR = 1.21, 95%CI = 1.08-1.35, p = 1.35e-03

OBJECTIVES/BACKGROUND: Most middle-aged and older adult patients with isolated (idiopathic) REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) eventually develop parkinsonism, dementia with Lewy bodies, or multiple system atrophy. We aimed to describe the current sleep medicine specialist approach toward RBD prognostic counseling, and to determine physician beliefs and characteristics that impact provision of counseling.
PATIENTS/METHODS: We surveyed 70 sleep medicine physicians with RBD expertise for demographic information, counseling practices, and their beliefs and understandings concerning the associatio

BACKGROUND: Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) occurs occasionally in essential tremor (ET), but polysomnographic REM sleep without atonia (RSWA) analyses have been sparse.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the amount and distribution of polysomnographic RSWA, the electrophysiologic substrate of RBD, in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and ET.
METHODS: We analyzed quantitative RSWA in 73 patients: PD (23), ET (23), and age-sex-matched controls (27). None had dream-enactment behavior history or received antidepressants. Phasic, tonic, "any," and phasic-burst duration RSWA m

BACKGROUND: Non-motor symptoms can be present in essential tremor (ET). We intend to assess the frequency of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and dysautonomic symptoms in ET patients and evaluate the differences between patients with ET and RBD (ET-RBD and ET without RBD [ET-nonRBD]).
METHODS: All ET patients were contacted by telephone. Autonomic symptoms were assessed using the Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease-Autonomic (SCOPA-AUT) questionnaire, and RBD symptoms with the RBD screening questionnaire (RBDSQ) using ≥5 as a cut-off for probable RBD (pRBD).

OBJECTIVES: Antidepressants substantially affect REM sleep characteristics and trigger manifestations of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in the general, non-narcoleptic, population. Antidepressants are also frequently administrated in an attempt to suppress cataplexy. We investigated the role of antidepressants in the development of RBD in narcolepsy with cataplexy (NC) patients.
PATIENTS/METHODS: Seventy-five patients diagnosed with NC were assessed by a structured interview (focused on RBD manifestations and the use of antidepressants) and night video-polysomnography followed by the multi

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is characterized by atypical REM sleep motor activity, vivid dreams and nightmares, and dream-enacting behaviors that can result in injuries to the patient and bed partner. It is also a known predictor of Parkinson disease (PD). Alexithymia has been associated with disturbances in sleep and dreaming (e.g., nightmares) and is a non-motor symptom of PD. We assessed alexithymia and disturbed dreaming in iRBD patients with the aim of determining if these two factors are elevated and interrelated among this population.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Rapid-eye-movement sleep (REM sleep) physiologically entails arterial pressure surges. Pressure surges may lead to acute cardiovascular events in risk conditions such as arterial hypertension. We investigated whether arterial hypertension alters the rate of occurrence and the characteristics of the pressure surges during REM sleep.
DESIGN: Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were compared with Wistar-Kyoto normotensive controls (WKY) and a group of SHR, in which hypertension was prevented by long-term enalapril treatment (ena-SHR).
SETTING: N/A.
SUBJECTS: Seven male rats

Although normal subjects do not move during REM sleep, patients with Parkinson's disease may experience REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD). The characteristics of the abnormal REM sleep movements in RBD have, however, not been studied. We interviewed one hundred consecutive non-demented patients with Parkinson's disease and their bed partners using a structured questionnaire assessing the presence of RBD. They rated the quality of movements, voice and facial expression during RBD as being better, equal or worse than in awake ON levodopa condition. Night-time sleep and movements were video-moni

Patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy (NC) present excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), cataplexy and an altered architecture of nocturnal sleep, with frequent episodes of REM-sleep at sleep onset (SOREM-sleep). This altered organization of nocturnal sleep may be accompanied by some differences in the functioning of the cognitive processes involved in the access, organization and consolidation of information during sleep. This study attempts to ascertain whether the activation of semantic memory during REM-sleep, as measured using a technique of semantic priming (namely, the facilitation of the ac

We conducted a prospective controlled study of the clinical and biological determinants of the mental status abnormalities in 139 patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and 55 patients without GBS placed in the intensive care unit (ICU controls). There were mental status changes in 31% of GBS patients and in 16% of controls (odds ratio = 2.3; P = 0.04). In GBS patients, they included vivid dreams (19%), illusions (30%, including an illusory body tilt), hallucinations (60%, mainly visual) and delusions (70%, mostly paranoid). They appeared a median 9 days after disease onset (range 1-40 da

In institutionalized adults with intellectual disability (ID), Helicobacter pylori infection occurs at approximately twice the rate it appears in the general population, and it may be responsible for the twofold higher rates of peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer in this population. Medical, behavioural and additional environmental factors, as well as level of ID, may be related to the risk of infection with H. pylori. One hundred and sixty-eight adults with ID who were currently, had previously been or had never been institutionalized underwent a biopsychosocial evaluation. This included
