Hospital readmission in first-time admitted patients with schizophrenia: smoking patients had higher hospital readmission rate than non-smoking patients.

OBJECTIVES: To consider smoke-free policies for the patients with schizophrenia, the present study examined how smoking behavior is related to hospital readmission among patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in 2007 on 460 discharged patients with schizophrenia who voluntarily admitted in the participating psychiatric hospitals at first time. We reviewed smoking status, readmissions, and other variables including socio-demographic characteristics, process of care, and social functioning at discharge using the Global Assessment of Functioning scale (GAF). Latin America and the Caribbean Code Against Cancer 1st edition: Tobacco and nicotine-related products, secondhand smoke, and alcohol and cancer.

Tobacco, secondhand smoke (SHS), and alcohol, all carcinogens, are leading preventable cancer risk factors in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Since 2000, smoking and SHS exposure have significantly decreased in the region. Yet alcohol consumption remains high. The entry of nicotine-related products such as electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) threatens achievements made in tobacco control and chronic diseases prevention, including cancer. E-cigs use is likely associated with smoking initiation among adolescents who had never smoked and dual use with combustible tobacco products. Therefore, th

Secondhand smoke during the periconceptional period increases the risk for orofacial clefts in offspring.

BACKGROUND: To examine whether exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) during the periconceptional period among nonsmoking women is associated with an increased risk for orofacial clefts (OFCs) in offspring in a population with low rates of maternal active smoking but high rates of SHS exposure. METHODS: We recruited 240 women with OFC-affected pregnancies and 1420 women who delivered healthy infants from a population-based case-control study in northern China during 2002 and 2016. Data including self-reported SHS exposure were collected by trained health care workers through face-to-face intervie

The policy implementation playbook: a cross-policy taxonomy of post-adoption tobacco industry tactics.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco industry interference during policy development is well documented, yet evidence on how the industry responds after policies are adopted and enter into force remains fragmented across policy domains and jurisdictions. This study systematically examines post-adoption tobacco industry conduct across key tobacco control measures and develops a cross-policy taxonomy of post-adoption tactics. We conducted as scoping review and qualitative evidence synthesis of peer-reviewed and grey literature, searching six data bases and Tobacco Control's News Analysis archive. Using inductive

Mental health nurses' beliefs about smoking by mental health facility inpatients.

This study examined beliefs of mental health nurses about smoking by clients, nurses, and visitors in inpatient facilities and identified the influence of years of experience, smoke-free status, and workplace on these beliefs. Data were collected by a survey, distributed via a nursing newsletter with approximately 600 members. Descriptive statistics and cross-tabulations explored the data. A total of 104 responses were received. Smoke-free status made significant differences to nurses' beliefs relating to prohibition of smoking for clients, staff, and visitors; concern about the effects of pas

Optimum Urine Cotinine and NNAL Levels to Distinguish Smokers from Non-Smokers by the Changes in Tobacco Control Policy in Korea from 2008 to 2018.

INTRODUCTION: We examined the age- and sex-specific distributions of biomarkers of tobacco smoke exposure to determine the optimal cutoffs to distinguish smokers from non-smokers over the last 10 years in Korea, during which smoking prevalence and secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure declined due to changes in tobacco control policy. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey on creatinine-adjusted urinary cotinine (2008-2018; 33 429 adults: 15 653 males and 17 776 females) and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL; 2016-2018; 6337 adult

Initial Views and Experiences of Vaping in Prisons: A Qualitative Study With People in Custody Preparing for the Imminent Implementation of Scotland's Prison Smokefree Policy.

INTRODUCTION: Scotland is one of the few countries in which e-cigarettes were available in prisons before the introduction of a comprehensive national smokefree policy, to assist in its implementation. This qualitative study explores the initial views and experiences of vaping in this specific context, from the perspective of people in custody (prisoners). AIMS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight people in custody were interviewed approximately 1-2 months after rechargeable e-cigarettes were made available in prisons and 2-5 weeks before implementation of a smokefree policy. Data were thematically anal

Provider Perspectives on a Tobacco-Free Workplace Program in Healthcare Settings Serving Rural and Medically Underserved Areas of Texas: A Mixed Methods Study on Perceived Resource Availability and Value.

People with substance use disorders (SUDs) smoke at elevated rates compared to the general population, experience significant health disparities, and are overrepresented in rural and medically underserved areas with limited substance use treatment centers (SUTCs), leading individuals to seek care at medical healthcare centers (MHCs) (i.e., organizations providing comprehensive primary and preventive care). Thus, understanding MHCs' and SUTCs' capacity for adoption of tobacco-free workplace programs (TFWPs) that involve tobacco-free workplace policies and tobacco use treatment delivery is vital

Legislators' beliefs on tobacco control policies in Nevada.

The purpose of this study was to identify Nevada legislators' views on comprehensive smoke-free (SF) policy development. The Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act (NCIAA) is a weak law that prohibits smoking in most indoor public places, excluding stand-alone bars and casino gaming areas. Nevada's state senators and assembly members were contacted to participate in the study. A literature review guided modifications of an instrument previously used to measure county-level officials' policy views in Kentucky. Descriptive statistics were conducted for selected variables, while independent t tests and one-

Secondhand Smoke Exposure Among High-Risk Patients in the United States (NHANES 2001-2012): Implications for Clinical Practice.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and respiratory disease are susceptible to health consequences related to secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure. This study examined the prevalence, time trends, and correlates of SHS exposure among these patients compared with individuals without these diseases (control). METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2001-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. All adults (≥20 years old) who were nonsmokers and exposed to SHS (serum cotinine level 0.015-10 ng/mL), had cancer (n = 1,440), CVD (congestive heart failure, coronary

Markov-model cost-effectiveness evaluation of a cessation programme when tobacco policies are comprehensive.

OBJECTIVES: This study conducts a cost-effectiveness analysis of the Tobacco Treatment Programme (TTP) of Uruguay's National Resource Fund (NRF), within the context of the country's advanced implementation of tobacco control policies. DESIGN: We run a 10 000 Markov model simulation with three states (people who smoke, people who have quit smoking and death) to simulate the trajectories of a cohort. The model has been widely used in previous studies evaluating smoking cessation interventions. PARTICIPANTS: For the simulations, we use information from the 2016 to 2017 NRF TTP cohort. Nearly ha

A mixed-methods study exploring free nicotine replacement therapy as a strategy to promote tobacco treatment equity at Cancer Center Cessation Initiative sites.

PURPOSE: Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a safe, efficacious smoking cessation treatment for cancer patients. However, insurance coverage for NRT varies widely, limiting its ability to lessen tobacco-related disease and creating inequities in access. Offering free NRT to cancer patients who smoke has the potential to increase tobacco treatment engagement and promote equity. This mixed-methods study aims to describe how some NCI Cancer Center Cessation Initiative (C3I) sites provided free NRT within their tobacco treatment programs (TTPs). METHODS: Participating sites' (N = 9) TTP and pa

A quasi-experimental study examining New York State's tobacco-free regulation: effects on clinical practice behaviors.

BACKGROUND: On July 24, 2008, New York State (NYS) became the first state to require all state-funded or state-certified substance use disorder (SUD) treatment organizations to be 100% tobacco-free and offer tobacco cessation (TC) treatment. METHODS: The current study used a quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group design with a pretest and posttest to examine the effect of the NYS tobacco-free regulation on three clinical practice behaviors (use of TC-related intake procedures, use of guideline recommended counseling for TC, and pharmacotherapy availability) in a diverse sample of SU

A retrospective survey of the use of bupropion slow release by members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

BACKGROUND: Since the addition of bupropion slow release (Zyban, GlaxoSmithKline, Mississauga) to the Department of National Defence (DND) smoking cessation program (Butt Out), utilizing bupropion (Zyban) in combination with behaviour modification counselling, the Directorate of Medical policy has received several anecdotal reports from pharmacists and Canadian Forces members attributing significant side effects to the use of Zyban. As a result, the DND wished to assess the benefits versus the risks of using Zyban as part of the smoking cessation program. Subsequently, a retrospective review o

Measurement of airborne nicotine, as a marker of secondhand smoke exposure, in homes with residents who smoke in 9 European countries.

OBJECTIVE: Smoke-free policies are effective in preventing secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, but their adoption at home remains largely voluntary. This study aimed to quantify SHS exposure in homes with residents who smoke in Europe according to households' characteristics, tobacco consumption habits, and national contextual factors. METHODS: Cross-sectional study (March 2017-September 2018) based on measurements of air nicotine inside 162 homes with residents who smoke from nine European countries. We installed passive samplers for seven consecutive days to monitor nicotine concentrations. Th
