Implementation of the Article 13 WHO FCTC measures and changes in cigarette smoking among youth in 42 countries.

INTRODUCTION: Despite a decline in global smoking prevalence among adolescents, around 21 million youth report current cigarette smoking. Exposure to tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship (TAPS) is a risk factor for smoking initiation, and therefore the Article 13 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) requires comprehensive TAPS bans. We examined the associations between changes in youth cigarette smoking and implementation of Article 13. METHODS: We used two rounds of cross-sectional data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) for 42 countries: first bet

Can nicotine replacement therapy be personalized? A statistical learning analysis.

BACKGROUND: Technology has made automated care personalization practical, but useful personalization requires information about systematic differences between individuals in the effectiveness of different interventions. Here, we used observational data to search for differences in smoking cessation treatment outcomes associated with interactions between participant characteristics and different types and doses of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). METHODS: We analyzed 33,077 enrollments in a large primary care smoking cessation program in Ontario, Canada. We considered 10 types and combinati

Motivational interviewing telephone counseling to increase postpartum maintenance of abstinence from tobacco.

Although many women quit smoking while pregnant, rates of relapse after delivery are high. We examined the effectiveness of motivational interviewing (MI) in maintaining postpartum abstinence from smoking among pregnant women who recently quit smoking (N = 382), randomized to receive five brief MI phone counseling calls or to a prenatal and postpartum care as usual control condition. Relapse to smoking was assessed at 3, 6, and 12 months postpartum based on self-report and urine cotinine. Cox regressions compared conditions on relapse outcomes and hazard ratio of total number of MI calls was e

Banning smokeless tobacco in India: policy analysis.

India is the second largest producer and third largest consumer of tobacco. According to GATS India Report (2009-10), the users of only smokeless tobacco (SLT) are more than double than that of smokers. SLT use is an imminent public health problem, which is contributing to high disease burden in India. It is a "unique" tobacco product due to its availability in myriad varieties, easy access, and affordability especially for adolescents. It has been studied to be a gateway product and facilitates initiation. Currently, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) have prohibited the

Childhood smoking: the research, clinical and theoretical imperative for nursing action.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoking is a major international health issue which nurses are ideally positioned to address. Childhood represents a cri … clinical settings. FINDINGS: Evidence exists that behaviourally based interventions by nurses for smoking prevention/cessation are effective with children. Key components of effective behaviourally based antismoking approaches for smokers include addressing self-efficacy to quit, providing social support, resisting temptation to smoke and discussing issues related …

[Prediction of cancer mortality in Scandinavia in 2005. Effect of various interventions].

Approximate estimates have been made of the effect by the year 2005 of various preventive measures to reduce cancer mortality in Scandinavia. Figures have been calculated for changes in smoking, diet and exposure to sunlight (primary prevention), for earlier diagnosis (secondary prevention), and improved survival as a result of improved treatment (tertiary prevention). The calculations have been performed with the American program CAN TROL, the effect being expressed as the percentage reduction in cancer mortality by the year 2005. The results give promise of a substantial overall reduction in

What should we tell prostate cancer patients about (secondary) prevention?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To briefly summarize the epidemiologic findings of selected lifestyle factors for prostate cancer progression, metastasis, or death, with a focus on behaviors after diagnosis where possible. We conclude by providing guidance on the lifestyle practices that physicians may wish to prioritize for discussion with their patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Growing, but still limited, evidence suggests that lifestyle factors after prostate cancer diagnosis may impact prostate-cancer-specific and overall morality. In particular, smoking and obesity may increase the risk of disease progressi

US Tobacco 21 Policies and Potential Mortality Reductions by State.

IMPORTANCE: Research shows that Tobacco 21 (T21) policies with a minimum legal access age for tobacco products of 21 years reduce smoking, yet their impact varies across US states due to differences in smoking behaviors, mortality rates, and policy coverage. OBJECTIVE: To quantify potential reductions in smoking-attributable mortality associated with Tobacco 21 policies for each of the 50 states and Washington, DC. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The Cancer Intervention Surveillance and Modeling Network (CISNET) Tobacco Control Policy Model of smoking was used with detailed state-specific

Strategies to improve smoking cessation rates in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Primary care is an important setting in which to treat tobacco addiction. However, the rates at which providers address smoking cessation and the success of that support vary. Strategies can be implemented to improve and increase the delivery of smoking cessation support (e.g. through provider training), and to increase the amount and breadth of support given to people who smoke (e.g. through additional counseling or tailored printed materials). OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of strategies intended to increase the success of smoking cessation interventions in primary care

[Time trends of occupational differences in smoking behaviour of employed men and women in Germany : Results of the 1999-2013 microcensus].

BACKGROUND: Studies show that people with a low occupational status are more likely to smoke than those with a high occupational status. Against the background of a general decline in tobacco consumption, time trends of occupational differences in smoking behaviour of employed men and women in Germany were examined. METHODS: The analyses were based on the last five waves of the German microcensus that included questions about smoking (1999, 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2013), taking only employed men and women aged 18-64 years into account (n = 688,746). Information on occupational position was summa

State Preemption and Local Tobacco Control: Constraints and Opportunities for Innovation in the US.

State preemption of local laws may impede tobacco control, yet little research has examined local policy activity before, during, and after preemption. This study addresses this gap. We summarized state laws preempting local smoke-free workplace, youth access, and licensure laws (CDC's STATE) and local legislative activity before, during, and after preemption (Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation) across 1999-2021. Preemption existed for smoke-free workplaces in 18 states, youth access in 21, and licensure in 13. Regarding smoke-free workplace laws, local laws were passed in 5 of 11 sta

Firefighters as a Key Alliance Group to Advocate for Tobacco Control Policies in Korea.

Tobacco control is a public health priority. However, Korea has recently experienced a reversal in its long-term decline in smoking prevalence. To address this trend, it is essential to broaden advocacy networks by engaging new stakeholders. We propose that firefighters represent a strategic yet under-represented partner in tobacco control because their professional interests closely align with tobacco-related policy goals. First, cigarette butts have consistently been the leading cause of fire incidents, and tobacco use directly undermines firefighters' core mission to protect life and public

Seizure associated with sleep deprivation and sustained-release bupropion.

This case report describes a generalized seizure associated with sustained-release bupropion use and sleep deprivation. The subject, a 31-year-old female smoker, was participating in a clinical trial evaluating an investigational medication for smoking cessation that used sustained-release bupropion as an active control. After 5 weeks of bupropion use, the subject experienced a generalized tonic clonic seizure after staying up nearly all night packing and moving to a new residence. The patient had no other risk factors for seizures. We suggest that sleep deprivation may add to the risk of bupr

Substance abuse in pregnancy. ACOG Technical Bulletin Number 195--July 1994 (replaces No. 96, September 1986).

Substance abuse by pregnant women continues to be one of the leading problems in modern obstetrics. The frequency of abuse of more than one substance, especially with alcohol and tobacco, makes interpretation of the literature difficult; however, there is little doubt that substance abuse is associated with poor pregnancy outcome. Furthermore, abstinence and prenatal care are associated with improved perinatal outcomes. Despite the positive impact of perinatal care, however, continued abuse of substances during pregnancy can result in infant impairment. Clinicians who provide care to pregnant

Maintaining abstinence from smoking after a period of enforced abstinence - systematic review, meta-analysis and analysis of behaviour change techniques with a focus on mental health.

BACKGROUND: Smoking prevalence is doubled among people with mental health problems and reaches 80% in inpatient, substance misuse and prison settings, widening inequalities in morbidity and mortality. As more institutions become smoke-free but most smokers relapse immediately post-discharge, we aimed to review interventions to maintain abstinence post-discharge. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Web of Science were searched from inception to May 2016 and randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort studies conducted with adult smokers in prison, inpatient mental health or subst
