Perceived Family Functioning and Social Adaptation Levels in Patients with Depression.

Depression is not only an individual disorder but also a condition associated with family systems. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between perceived family functioning and social adaptation in adults diagnosed with depression. The sample consisted of 123 patients attending a state hospital psychiatric outpatient clinic. Data were collected using the Perceived Family Functioning Scale (PFFS) and Social Adaptation Self-Evaluation Scale (SASS). Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses were performed. The mean PFFS and

First Diagnostic Questionnaire for Assessing Patients' Social Functioning: Comprehensive DDX3X Syndrome Patient Profile.

Background/Objectives: DDX3X syndrome is often misdiagnosed as autism spectrum disorder (ASD, Rett Syndrome, and Dandy-Walker Syndrome). Precise phenotyping is needed with reference to neurodevelopmental diagnosis. Observation of behavior and communication in parents with DDX3X syndrome in the USA, France, and Poland; conversations with the parents of patients; and rudimentary information in evidence-based medical articles prompted us to identify differences in communication, play, and social interaction between children with ASD only, those with both ASD and DDX3X, and those with DDX3X only.

A phase 2 clinical trial of a vasopressin V1a receptor antagonist shows improved adaptive behaviors in men with autism spectrum disorder.

There are no approved pharmacological therapies to address the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), namely, persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction and the presence of restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, or activities. The neuropeptide vasopressin has been implicated in the regulation of social behaviors, and its modulation has emerged as a therapeutic target for ASD. The phase 2 VANILLA clinical trial reported here evaluated balovaptan, an orally administered selective vasopressin V1a receptor antagonist, in 223 men with ASD and inte

Oral Supplementation with Maca Improves Social Recognition Deficits in the Valproic Acid Animal Model of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a congenital, lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder whose main symptom is impaired social communication and interaction. However, no drug can treat social deficits in patients with ASD, and treatments to alleviate social behavioral deficits are sorely needed. Here, we examined the effect of oral supplementation of maca (Lepidium meyenii) on social deficits of in utero-exposed valproic acid (VPA) mice, widely used as an ASD model. Although maca is widely consumed as a fertility enhancer and aphrodisiac, it possesses multiple beneficial activities. Additionally,

Infant Achievements Intervention Improves Caregiver Implementation Fidelity and Infant Social Communication Outcomes: A Preliminary Randomized Clinical Trial.

UNLABELLED: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) focused on idiopathic social communication delay (SCD) in the first year of life are rare. We preliminarily tested the efficacy of an 8-week caregiver-implemented intervention for infants with idiopathic SCD. Infants (8-12 months) with SCD were block-randomized with caregivers to the Infant Achievements (IA) (n = 18) or Caregiver Education (CE) (n = 20) group in this assessor-masked RCT. Assessments were completed at baseline, post-intervention, and 8-week follow-up. IA caregivers received reflective, home-based coaching to implement naturalistic

Social psychological analysis of facilitated communication: implications for education.

Despite lack of empirical support, facilitated communication was rapidly adopted and used with individuals who have severe communication disorders. An overview of the psychological literature was provided here to support theoretical explanations for this rapid adoption. The literature suggests that cognitive biases, ambiguous stimuli, and biases in data may be associated with a tendency to adopt interventions such as facilitated communication. Psychosocial influences associated with autism, the helping relationship, and the professional career cycle may enhance a readiness to adopt alternative

Development of the Children's Communication Checklist (CCC): a method for assessing qualitative aspects of communicative impairment in children.

The Children's Communication Checklist (CCC) was developed to assess aspects of communicative impairment that are not adequately evaluated by contemporary standardised language tests. These are predominantly pragmatic abnormalities seen in social communication, although other qualitative aspects of speech and language were also included. Some items covering social relationships and restricted interests were incorporated, so that the relationship between pragmatic difficulties and other characteristics of pervasive developmental disorders could be explored. Checklist ratings were obtained for 7

Structure of the autism symptom phenotype: A proposed multidimensional model.

BACKGROUND: The main objective of this study was to develop a comprehensive, empirical model that will allow the reorganization of the structure of the pervasive developmental disorder symptom phenotype through factor analysis into more homogeneous dimensions. METHOD: The sample consisted of 209 children with pervasive developmental disorder referred for genetic studies. The 12 subdomains of the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised were used in a factor analysis, and the emerged factors were then correlated with independent variables (measures of cognition, adaptive function, and diagnostic su

The social anxiety spectrum.

Social anxiety disorder is well suited to the spectrum concept because it has trait-like qualities of early onset, chronicity, and no empirically derived threshold that demarcates normal from clinically significant trait social anxiety. Social anxiety disorder has been shown to respond to relatively specific pharmacologic and cognitive-behavioral therapies, which makes identification of other conditions that may lie on the social anxiety disorder spectrum important because of possible treatment implications. Biologic markers associated with social anxiety disorder also may be shared by similar

Social Media Use and Conduct Problems in Emerging Adults.

Social media use has become pervasive in the lives of emerging adults. Although social media may provide individuals with positive opportunities for communication and learning, social media sites also may provide an outlet for youth conduct problems, such as bullying, harassment, and intentional hostility and aggression toward others. Yet, the relationship between social media use and conduct problems remains unclear. This study investigated the association between conduct disorder (CD) symptoms before age 15 and social media use during emerging adulthood in a large, nationally representative

A synbiotic formulation of Lactobacillus reuteri and inulin alleviates ASD-like behaviors in a mouse model: the mediating role of the gut-brain axis.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a complex neurodevelopmental disorder marked by social communication deficits and repetitive behaviors, may see symptom amelioration through gut microbiota modulation. This study investigates the effects of a synbiotic - specifically a probiotic amplified by prebiotic supplementation - on ASD-like mouse model's social deficiencies. This model was established via valproic acid injection into pregnant females. Post-weaning, male progeny received daily synbiotic treatment, a combination of Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) and inulin, for four weeks. Results indic

Hoarding in Children and Adolescents with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Compared to studies in adults, there have been few studies of hoarding in children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In the current study, we evaluated OCD clinical features, Axis I disorders, and social reciprocity scores in 641 children and adolescents with OCD, of whom 163 (25%) had hoarding compulsions and 478 did not. We found that, as a group, youth with hoarding had an earlier age at onset and more severe lifetime OCD symptoms, poorer insight, more difficulty making decisions and completing tasks, and more overall impairment. The hoarding group also had a greater

The autism diagnostic observation schedule-generic: a standard measure of social and communication deficits associated with the spectrum of autism.

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Generic (ADOS-G) is a semistructured, standardized assessment of social interaction, communication, play, and imaginative use of materials for individuals suspected of having autism spectrum disorders. The observational schedule consists of four 30-minute modules, each designed to be administered to different individuals according to their level of expressive language. Psychometric data are presented for 223 children and adults with Autistic Disorder (autism), Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDDNOS) or nonspectrum diagnoses.

Asperger's disorder in adulthood: a case report.

Asperger's disorder is a pervasive development disorder. It involves qualitative disorders in social relationship and communication as well as restricted and repetitive interests and activities, with no delay in language acquisition. Although Asperger's disorder is an illness that begins in childhood, its diagnosis may frequently not be done until later stages. The case presented is about a 21 year old man with a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder who, after several admissions, was sent to the Rehabilitation Hospital Unit for stabilization and diagnostic study given the atypical features of

[Autism. Therapeutic approach and scientific evidence].

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a qualitative alteration in social interaction and communication, associated with restricted interests and stereotyped behaviors. Before 3 years old, it can be inferred by the lack of social and communicative intention, stereotyped behaviors, poor response to being called by name, poor eye contact, absence of language and inadequate sensory responses. It is often associated with other neurodevelopmental disorders (attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, language disorders, intellectual disability, motor clumsiness), neuropsychiatric d

Office screening and early identification of children with autism.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), also called pervasive developmental disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition, Text Revised), constitute a group of neurodevelopmental disorders that coalesce around a common theme of impairments in social functioning, communication abilities, and repetitive or rigid behaviors. The ASDs considered here include autism/autistic disorder, Asperger disorder/Asperger syndrome (AS), and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified. This article focuses on autism/autistic disorder screening and its early identi

Physical activity and addressing emotional needs can help reduce medication dependence in autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that causes deficits in social interactions, communication skills, intellectual limitations, and self-injurious behaviors. Common systemic comorbidities include gastrointestinal issues, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. Recent study has found a link between gut microbiota alterations and neurobehavioral symptoms in children with ASD. Physical activity and exercise therapy have been demonstrated to promote communication and social interaction while also positively influencing microbiota composition. This research intends to high
