The impact and legacy of COVID-19 on community-based multidisciplinary teams organising integrated health and social care for older people with long-term conditions: Findings from the evaluation of the integrated care and support Pioneers.

ObjectivesThe COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted health and social care (HSC) services in many countries, including England. At the same time, it forced systems to respond innovatively to radically changed circumstances and challenges. This study identifies the impacts and emerging legacy of the pandemic for community-based multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) supporting older people with multiple long-term conditions living in their own homes.MethodsThirty-eight strategic, operational, and frontline staff involved with MDTs in seven areas in England were interviewed between July 2020 and August 2

Social and Regional Factors Predict the Likelihood of Admission to a Nursing Home After Acute Hospital Stay in Older People With Chronic Health Conditions: A Multilevel Analysis Using Routinely Collected Hospital and Census Data in Switzerland.

If hospitalization becomes inevitable in the course of a chronic disease, discharge from acute hospital care in older persons is often associated with temporary or persistent frailty, functional limitations and the need for help with daily activities. Thus, acute hospitalization represents a particularly vulnerable phase of transient dependency on social support and health care. This study examines how social and regional inequality affect the decision for an institutionalization after acute hospital discharge in Switzerland. The current analysis uses routinely collected inpatient data from al

Knowledge hegemony and epistemic reclamation in Central Asian higher education: a community case study of Eastern scholastic heritage integration, sociological field dynamics, and the conditions for decolonizing economic reasoning across STEM and social science disciplines in Uzbekistan.

This community case study provides a broad sociological account of a pilot curriculum intervention conducted at a regional public university in Uzbekistan, in which modules drawing on Eastern scholastic economic heritage, specifically the thought of Ibn Khaldun, Al-Farabi, Al-Biruni, Al-Ghazali, and Yusuf Khas Hajib were integrated into the general education requirements of both Engineering and Social Science faculties (N = 148). Grounded in Bourdieu's field theory and theory of habitus, Fricker's account of epistemic injustice read alongside Spivak's and Dotson's accounts of epistemic violenc

Social case-work in general practice: an alternative approach.

During a two-year period a senior case-worker was seconded by a voluntary family case-work agency, the Liverpool Personal Service Society, to work with three general practitioners. The commonest reasons for referral of the 157 new patients to the social worker over this study period were extreme poverty; housing, matrimonial, and psychiatric problems; and problems of fatherless families. The successful and valuable co-operation between the general practitioners, case-worker, and various specialist professional and financial services of the Society have proved that a professional social worker

First person account: maintaining mental health in a turbulent world.

The article and the poems that follow are part of the Schizophrenia Bulletin's ongoing First Person Accounts series. We hope that mental health professionals--the Bulletin's primary audience--will take this opportunity to learn about the issues and difficulties confronted by consumers of mental health care. In addition, we hope that these accounts will give patients and families a better sense of not being alone in confronting the problems that can be anticipated by persons with serious emotional difficulties. Although there are a number of books and articles describing the personal experience

Do poorer people have poorer access to local resources and facilities? The distribution of local resources by area deprivation in Glasgow, Scotland.

It has commonly been suggested that in modern cities individual or household deprivation (for example, low income or education) is amplified by area level deprivation (for example, lack of jobs or good schools), in ways which damage the health of the poorest and increase health inequalities. The aim of this study was to determine the location of a range of resources and exposures by deprivation in a UK city. We examined the location of 42 resources in Glasgow City, Scotland, in 2005-2006, by quintile of small area deprivation. Measures included number per 1000 population, network distance to n

Addictions without Drugs: Contemporary Addictions or Way of Life?

In the five thousand years of recorded history there is written evidence of various types of addiction. In recent decades scientists focus their attention on addictions without the immediate introduction of psychoactive substances into the organism or the so-called "addictions without drugs". Studies have revealed a number of similarities between drug addictions and addictions without drugs that also carry biological, psychological and social consequences in the form of addictive activity carvings, adrenaline alarm, dopamine and serotonin secretion, tolerance and abstinence syndrome same as cl

[Tuberculosis and society].

Brief review is made of the interconnections between tuberculosis and poverty and other social factors, with special emphasis on the current Japan's tuberculosis situation. In pre-war Japan, the tuberculosis had apparently an aspect of a socioecomic problem which led to lively discussions. With the progress in medical technology and control measures after the war, such aspect of the disease has become more masked and difficult to see. Often, it is viewed merely as a problem of a small and special fragment of the population such as homelessness, and its wide and diffuse connections with the soc

Mediators and Moderators of the Influences of Living Alone on Psychological Distress Among Japanese Older Adults.

This study explored gender differences in mediators and moderators of the association between living alone and psychological distress among 2556 Japanese older adults aged 65 years and older. Putative mediators and moderators were physical health, income, informal networks, and social support. Living alone was significantly related to psychological distress only in men. Significant mediators were income in both genders and social support only in men. Living alone in women was related to having more informal networks, which reduced psychological distress. This contributed to mitigating the effe

The psychosocial evaluation of the hospice patient.

A psychosocial evaluation of a patient is an important first step in the provision of care to hospice patients and their families. It serves as a guide for intervention, communicates social work concerns to other caregivers, and articulates important features of the patient/family system from an interdisciplinary perspective. The psychosocial evaluation addresses the patient's problems in a historical framework by identifying important developmental features as they pertain to the tasks of dying. It identifies physical resources and needs and evaluates the patient's psychosocial functioning, w

What drives horse success at following human-given cues? An investigation of handler familiarity and living conditions.

Cues such as the human pointing gesture, gaze or proximity to an object are widely used in behavioural studies to evaluate animals' abilities to follow human-given cues. Many domestic mammals, such as horses, can follow human cues; however, factors influencing their responses are still unclear. We assessed the performance of 57 horses at a two-way choice task testing their ability to follow cues of either a familiar (N = 28) or an unfamiliar informant (N = 29). We investigated the effects of the length of the relationship between the horse and a familiar person (main caregiver), their social e
