Morality cut both ways: The role of cognition and emotion in attitude moralization and demoralization.

Moralized attitudes motivate social change, political participation, and charitable giving, but at the same time, hinder compromise, conformity, and acceptance of procedural solutions to conflict. Although considerable research has explored the consequences of moralized attitudes, the processes that lead to attitude moralization and demoralization are less clear. Across six studies (N = 4,464), we contrasted the moralization of attitudes about male circumcision (typically viewed as a matter of preference or convention in the United States) with the demoralization of attitudes about female circ

Planned versus unplanned alcohol and cannabis use: Motivational and contextual correlates among sexual minority women and gender diverse individuals.

BACKGROUND: Unplanned alcohol use has been theorized to contribute to experiencing more consequences at the daily level, and several risk factors have been identified in the general population. However, it remaines unclear whether these risk factors apply to sexual and gender minorities (SGM); if unique risk factors for substance use among SGM (e.g., microaggressions) are associated with elevated risk for unplanned alcohol or cannabis use; and if risk factors for unplanned drinking also apply to unplanned cannabis use. METHODS: We aimed to address these gaps by examining differences between p

Development and initial validation of an MDMA/Ecstasy motives assessment.

OBJECTIVE: MDMA/Ecstasy motives differ from those of other substances such as alcohol, cannabis, and methamphetamine. Previous literature on alcohol and cannabis use identified social, expansion, enhancement, coping, and conformism as primary motives for use. MDMA/Ecstasy users also report using the drug for increases in self-awareness and energy. The development of an MDMA/Ecstasy use motives assessment has potential to inform treatment interventions and public policy on harm reduction. METHOD: An MDMA/Ecstasy use motives assessment was developed from alcohol and cannabis motives measures an

Daily relationships between posttraumatic stress symptoms, drinking motives, and alcohol consumption in trauma-exposed sexual minority women.

Objective: Sexual minority women (SMW) evidence elevated rates of trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress (PTS), and alcohol consumption. Self-medication models of drinking suggest that individuals may drink to cope with symptoms of PTS, but this possibility remains untested among SMW. Method: The current study used data from drinking days collected via daily diary assessments from 81 trauma-exposed SMW. Participants were mostly White (72.8%) and ranged in age from 18 to 25 (M = 23.8). Participants were followed over 2 14-consecutive-day measurement bursts (720 person-days reported). Analyses we

[Factors influencing the prescription or non-prescription of antibiotics by general practitioners].

AIM: The authors wanted to identify the factors associated with prescription or non-prescription of antibiotics by general practitioners (GPs), for three frequent infectious diseases: tonsillitis, acute bronchitis (AB) and exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (ECB). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study included 574 patients followed by 58 randomly selected GPs in Eastern France. Data on physicians, patients (clinical, social and environmental) and antibiotic treatment (type, motivations) was collected during the consultation via a standardized questionnaire. RESULTS: Official recomme

Somatic Experiencing® Informed Therapeutic Group for the Care and Treatment of Biopsychosocial Effects upon a Gender Diverse Identity.

BACKGROUND: Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) is a resiliency-based treatment for autonomic nervous systems dysregulation syndromes, such as posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and physical syndromes like chronic pain, migraines, and fibromyalgia. "Transgender/gender non-conforming/gender variant" describes people whose gender identity/expression is different, at least part of the time, from the sex assigned at birth. Research indicates transgender individuals have a higher incidence of depression, anxiety, victimization, and discrimination. SE™ tools may support transgender/gender n

Beyond sexual freedom: clinical fallout.

This paper is a critical evaluation of the nature and meaning of various radical changes in sexual customs and behavior and their clinical consequences. The author contends that many of the revolutional changes demonstrate a complete and disastrous disregard of knowledge gained through painstaking psychodynamic and psychoanalytic investigations over the past 75 years.

Sex-based differences in right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex roles in fairness norm compliance.

Social norms are a common motivator or de-motivator of behavior through the need of humans to comply with acceptable behaviors of their social groups. Converging evidence from functional neuroimaging and noninvasive brain stimulation studies suggest that the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) is involved in social norm compliance. Extending this view, we suggest that rDLPFC may not act uniformly when men and women face different types of fairness norm compliance situations, and that there may be a sequential update of norm compliance after experiencing punishment. Using High-Definit

Adolescent girls' perceptions of goodness and badness and the role of will in their behavioral decisions.

The present study explored adolescents' ethical self-images and related behavioral decisions. Data were collected from two groups of adolescent girls (N = 49) using an open-ended survey. One group attended a public high school for gifted students and the other group attended an alternative public high school. The results indicate that goodness is connected with altruism, adherence to external standards, or self-beneficial actions. Alternatively, badness is associated with going against social norms, harming others, or violating inner values. In these two groups overall, decisions about how to

Interrogative suggestibility in opiate users.

The present study investigated interrogative suggestibility in opiate users. A group of patients undergoing a methadone detoxification programme in an in-patient drug treatment unit (Detox group, n = 21), and a group of residents who had come off drugs and were no longer suffering from withdrawal syndrome (Rehab group, n = 19) were compared on interrogative suggestibility and various other psychological factors. Significant differences were found between the two groups, with the Detox group having more physical and psychological problems, and a higher total suggestibility score in comparison w

Complexities of smoking education.

Cigarette smoking is a many-headed Hydra, which grows new smokers' heads as fast as they are lopped off. Efforts to change smokers' behavior usually reach a point of diminishing returns, as evidenced by experiences in smoking withdrawal clinics and in public anti-smoking education campaigns. Obviously, many smokers are refactory to anti-smoking education, a situation which has generated a great deal of pharmacological, neurochemical, psychological, and sociological research. The National Clearinghouse for Smoking and Health in the U.S.A. has used a "gradualist" or permissive approach in anti-s

Assessing timewise changes over 15 months in life-space mobility among community-dwelling elderly persons.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to examine the differences of timewise changes in life-space mobility between elderly people living alone and those living with others among community-dwelling elderly people from a day care facility with a rehabilitation service for seniors. METHODS: The present study used a longitudinal design with repeated measures every 3 months. In conformity with our inclusion criteria, this study included 233 community-dwelling elderly users of a day care facility with rehabilitation services for seniors in Japan. We analyzed the life-space assessment (LSA) sco

Joy-riding among British youth.

The behavioural and legal aspects of the problematic and repetitive criminal behaviour of aggravated vehicle taking or "joyriding" are reviewed as context for a study in Great Britain of data from 20 males imprisoned for joy-riding and/or vehicle theft for gain, 10 habitual joyriders who were members of a youth club established to counter the problem, 10 imprisoned house-breakers, and 10 males with no criminal convictions. No specific ethnographic, motivational, or personality differences between joy-riders and those involved in other crimes of theft were found, although there was evidence for

Cognitive rehearsal in the treatment of obesity: a comparison against cue avoidance and social pressure.

The effects of a cognitive (cognitive rehearsal) in the treatment of obesity were evaluated in a 16-week weight reduction programme by comparison against two other treatments, cue avoidance, and social pressure. Fifty-three obese females, categorised (on the basis of their weight loss after 3 weeks of dieting) as either high losers or low losers, were randomly assigned to one of these three treatments. Posttreatment weight losses were significantly greater for high losers than low losers, and for subjects in cue avoidance than those in social pressure. Those in cue avoidance went over their di

Unilateral Koilonychia Secondary to Chemical Depilatory Product.

Excess hair is a problem for both men and women who want to conform to today's cosmetic social norms. Chemical depilatories are a safe, fast, and inexpensive method of hair removal. The most commonly used depilatory agents are thioglycolates and to a lesser extent, sulphides. The most common side effect of chemical depilatories is irritant contact dermatitis. However, allergic contact dermatitis is rare and may be related to lanolin, fragrance, or thioglycolate itself. Unilateral koilonychia as a side effect of chemical depilatories has not been described previously in the literature. We repor

"They like me, they like me not": popularity and adolescents' perceptions of acceptance predicting social functioning over time.

This study examined the dual roles of adolescents' perceptions of social acceptance and sociometric popularity in predicting relative changes over time in adolescents' social functioning. Observational, self-report, and peer report data were obtained from 164 adolescents who were interviewed at age 13 years and then again at age 14 years, as well as their same-sex close friends. Adolescents who felt positively about their own social standing fared well over time, regardless of their level of sociometric popularity. Further, low popularity was particularly problematic for adolescents who failed
