Self-referential and anxiety-relevant information processing in subclinical social anxiety: an fMRI study.

The fear of negative evaluation is one of the hallmark features of social anxiety. Behavioral evidence thus far largely supports cognitive models which postulate that information processing biases in the face of socially relevant information are a key factor underlying this widespread phobia. So far only one neuroimaging study has explicitly focused on the fear of negative evaluation in social anxiety where the brain responses of social phobics were compared to healthy participants during the processing of self-referential relative to other-referential criticism, praise or neutral information.

Combined effects of mobile health (mHealth) psychoeducation and the Benson relaxation technique on caregiving burden among female caregivers of patients with cancer: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Psychoeducational and relaxation-based interventions have been shown to reduce caregiver burden; however, limited evidence exists regarding the effectiveness of combined interventions delivered via mobile health (mHealth) in resource-limited settings. This study aimed to evaluate the combined effects of mHealth-based psychoeducation and the Benson Relaxation Technique (BRT) on caregiver burden among female informal caregivers of patients with cancer. METHODS: A prospective, open-ended, randomized controlled trial (1:1 allocation) was conducted from October 2024 to March 2025. In t

Framing social information and generalized social phobia.

Patients with generalized social phobia (GSP, N = 33) and matched community controls (N = 31) engaged in a social interaction that was constructed to go well, and then received feedback that framed social cues reflecting either the absence of negative outcomes or the presence of positive outcomes. Following feedback that framed positive social cues, the GSP group predicted they would experience more anxiety in a subsequent interaction than did non-phobic controls. In contrast, following feedback framing the absence of negative outcomes, the GSP group did not differ from controls in their anxie

The Neural Signature of Social Dominance Discrimination by Means of Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation.

Hierarchy is a pervasive feature of social organization. The ability to rapidly discriminate hierarchical information is critical for social interaction. Here, we took advantage of a special technique in electroencephalography (EEG) known as fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS). We used this technique, which captures the automatic perception of faces, to explore the neural signature of social dominance discrimination. A stream of computer-generated faces was presented at 6 Hz, i.e. six faces/second. In the experimental condition, faces alternated from high to low social dominance within a s

Social representations of malaria in a southern malian community: an ethnographic qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is one of the prime reasons for medical consultation and the major cause of morbidity and mortality in Mali. To assess and understand the dynamics of social representations of malaria, the anthropological research was conducted in the Wayerema II neighbourhood of the health district of Sikasso, southern Mali. METHODS: This was an ethnographic study conducted qualitatively in 2011 and 2016 through informal conversations, 70 semi-structured interviews, and participant observations with key actors. The observations, conversations, and interviews investigated local people's pe

A mixed-methods study of community dog management and rabies awareness in Thailand.

Rabies elimination requires coordinated interventions across the human-animal-environment interface, yet sustained progress is often hindered by systemic gaps between dog population management, community engagement, and governance. This study investigated community perceptions and challenges related to rabies prevention and control across high-endemic areas in Thailand. Using a mixed-methods design, secondary provincial quantitative data were integrated with qualitative thematic analysis from 57 stakeholders in high endemic areas, including public health officials, policymakers, NGOs, animal-w

How do social norms impact HIV sexual risk behavior in HIV-positive men who have sex with men?: multiple mediator effects.

This study examines mediation of the association between social norms and unsafe sexual behavior. Self-report data were collected from 675 HIV-infected men enrolled in a study exploring interventions for HIV risk behavior. Unsafe sex included any unprotected anal sex with HIV-negative or HIV status unknown partners in the last three months. Norms for condom use indirectly influenced unsafe sex through condom self-efficacy and/or safer sex intentions. Additionally, sexual behavior discontrol influenced unsafe sex regardless of other individual or social factors. Our results suggest that interve

An examination of recent non-clinical panic attacks, panic disorder, anxiety sensitivity, and emotion regulation difficulties in the prediction of generalized anxiety disorder in an analogue sample.

Both non-clinical panic attacks and panic disorder (PD) have been found to be associated with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). This study examined a proxy risk factor model of the relationship between non-clinical panic attacks, PD, and GAD. Specifically, it was proposed that non-clinical panic attacks and PD predict GAD only due to their shared association with anxiety sensitivity (AS) and difficulties in emotion regulation. Results demonstrated that emotion regulation difficulties reliably predicted GAD above and beyond the experience of non-clinical panic attacks and PD. However, althoug

Specifying emotional information: Regulation of emotional intensity via executive processes.

The degree of specificity at which emotional information is activated might determine evoked emotional intensity. However, the nature of this effect remains unclear. Four studies tested (a) whether people hold the naïve theory that activating specific details of emotional information arouses acute feelings; (b) whether an emotionally distressed population (social phobics) also holds that theory; and (c) whether voluntarily focusing on specific aspects of a distressing situation reduces its emotional impact. Results indicate that control as well as emotionally distressed people hold a naïve the

The road not taken: social vs. private comparisons in Asperger׳s syndrome and high functioning autism.

Evaluation of the outcomes of our decisions may instigate comparisons of our actual outcome with those of others (social comparisons) or comparisons with alternative outcomes of choices not made (private comparisons). Previous research has suggested a deficit in attention to social information among individuals with autism spectrum disorders. As social comparison involves the processing of social information, here we investigated the orientation towards and sensitivity to social vs. private comparisons in individuals with autism spectrum disorders. We compared the sensitivity to social vs. pri

Impact of a social skills intervention on the hostile attributions of children with prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) has been linked to a wide array of developmental deficits, including significant impairments in social skills. Given the extensive body of evidence linking social information-processing patterns with social behavior, it is possible that social information-processing may represent one mechanism of behavioral change. The present investigation sought to answer the question of whether a well-established social skills intervention decreased the hostile attributions of children with PAE. Further, was there a differential impact of the intervention on hosti

Facial emotion processing in pediatric social anxiety disorder: Relevance of situational context.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) typically begins in childhood. Previous research has demonstrated that adult patients respond with elevated late positivity (LP) to negative facial expressions. In the present study on pediatric SAD, we investigated responses to negative facial expressions and the role of social context information. Fifteen children with SAD and 15 non-anxious controls were first presented with images of negative facial expressions with masked backgrounds. Following this, the complete images which included context information, were shown. The negative expressions were either a res

Health beliefs and parenting attitudes influence breastfeeding patterns among low-income African-American women.

OBJECTIVE: To describe breastfeeding initiation among 210 urban African-American mothers with inadequate prenatal care. METHODS: This study is a case-control study of postpartum mothers recruited from four large urban hospitals. RESULTS: Mothers who chose to breastfeed were more educated, employed before birth, married, and using contraception postnatally. Regression model analysis controlling for demographic differences revealed that breastfeeding was significantly associated with a higher perception of severity of illness and higher confidence in the ability of health care to prevent illne

Beyond single-person paradigms: N400 alterations in a social context in schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: Impairments in social cognition and context-dependent information processing constitute prominent features of schizophrenia. Among event-related potentials (ERPs), the N400 is known to be sensitive to semantic and social contextual information. However, its role in social contexts has received limited attention in schizophrenia research, as previous studies have largely examined the N400 in isolated, single-person paradigms or have focused on the P300 component. METHODS: In this study, we examined the N400 ERP component in a real-world social context using EEG hyperscanning. Pat

Social connectedness and healthcare engagement among adults with disabilities: The role of living arrangement.

People with disabilities face significant healthcare engagement barriers, leading to increased risks of preventable conditions and mortality. This is particularly concerning for the quarter who live alone. Despite recognition of healthcare engagement as a social process, empirical understanding remains limited. This study examined how social connectedness predicts healthcare engagement, testing whether disability status and living arrangements moderate these associations. We analyzed data from 335 U.S. adults (ages 21-83) via an online survey. Healthcare engagement was assessed through three i
