Acute Bouts of Exercising Improved Mood, Rumination and Social Interaction in Inpatients With Mental Disorders.

Background: Studies at the macro level (such as longer-term interventions) showed that physical activity impacts positively on cognitive-emotional processes of patients with mental disorders. However, research focusing on the immediate impact of acute bouts of exercise (micro level) are missing. The aim of the present study was therefore to investigate whether and to what extent single bouts of moderately intense exercise can influence dimensions of psychological functioning in inpatients with mental disorders. Method: 129 inpatients (mean age: 38.16 years; 50.4% females) took part and complet

Testing the Social Interaction Learning Model's Applicability to Adolescent Substance Misuse in an Australian Context.

BACKGROUND: Parents and peers both influence the development of adolescent substance misuse, and the Social Interaction Learning (SIL) model provides a theoretical explanation of the paths through which this occurs. OBJECTIVE: The SIL model has primarily been tested with conduct outcomes and in US samples. This study adds to the literature by testing the SIL model with four substance use outcomes in a sample of Australian youth. METHOD: We used structural equation modeling to test the fit of the SIL model to a longitudinal sample (n = 907) of students recruited in grade 5 in Victoria, Austra

Disadvantage of Social Sensitivity: Interaction of Oxytocin Receptor Genotype and Child Maltreatment on Brain Structure.

BACKGROUND: Oxytocin has received much attention as a prosocial and anxiolytic neuropeptide. In human studies, the G-allele of a common variant (rs53576) in the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) has been associated with protective properties such as reduced stress response and higher receptiveness for social support. In contrast, recent studies suggest a detrimental role of the rs53576 G-allele in the context of childhood maltreatment. To further elucidate the role of OXTR, gene by maltreatment interactions on brain structure and function were investigated. METHODS: Three hundred nine healthy par

Parent report of stereotyped behaviors, social interaction, and developmental disturbances in individuals with Angelman syndrome.

Research examining autistic symptoms in Angelman syndrome (AS) is limited. The goal of this study was to further characterize the nature of stereotyped behaviors, social interaction deficits, and developmental disturbances in individuals with AS. Parents of 248 individuals between the ages of 3 and 22 completed a survey of autistic symptomatology by mail, the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale. Results confirmed a high degree of developmental delay and limited expressive language skills. In terms of stereotyped behaviors and social interaction, areas of convergence and divergence between AS and behav

Measures of hostility as predictors of facial affect during social interaction: evidence for construct validity.

We assessed the construct validity of several self-report measures and an interview-based measure of hostility (Interpersonal Hostility Assessment Technique [IHAT]) by evaluating their associations with a behavioral indicator of hostile emotions (facial expressions during social interaction). Participants in the study were 123 volunteers (44% males and 56% females) who were recruited from local community organizations. Self-report measures (Cook-Medley Hostility Scale, Rotter Interpersonal Trust Scale, Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory, and Spielberger Anger Expression Scale) were represented by

Social anxiety and emotional body perception in context: Behavioral congruence effects with exploratory N170 interaction.

BACKGROUND: Emotional body postures are interpreted in relation to their contexts, but whether social anxiety is associated with altered contextual integration or selective differences across posture valences remains unclear. METHODS: Two studies used related posture-context emotion-recognition paradigms. Study 1 examined recognition accuracy and reaction time for positive, neutral, and negative postures presented in positive, neutral, and negative contexts in 69 participants with high or low social anxiety (HSA/LSA). Study 2 explored P1, N170, and late positive potential responses to positiv

Swimming speed of schooling fish controls social interaction strength in open-loop immersive virtual reality.

Collective motion in fish schools emerges from local social interactions, whose strength may vary with behavioural context. Swimming speed is known to influence manoeuvrability, spatial organization and information flow, yet its causal role in shaping social interaction strength remains poorly understood. Here, we experimentally test whether and how neighbour speed modulates social interactions in schooling fish. Using an immersive open-loop virtual-reality system, we exposed freely swimming rummy-nose tetras Hemigrammus rhodostomus to a single virtual conspecific moving along circular traject

Brief Report: Evaluating the Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC) Scores Between Interaction Partners.

PURPOSE: This study examined whether the Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC) yields consistent scores when administered by parents versus professionals within the same home environment. METHOD: Forty-one toddlers (73% male; mean age 28.2 months) at elevated likelihood for autism spectrum disorder completed two BOSCC sessions at home: one parent-led and one professional-led, following identical procedures. The domains, Social Communication (SC), Restricted and Repetitive Behaviours (RRB), and Other Abnormal Behaviours (OAB), were scored by independent coders. Scores were c

Endocrine modulation of self- and other-models: A cross-species framework for dyadic social interaction.

Social interactions across species rely on neural representations of self- and other-models that guide sequential behavioral exchanges. In this review, we propose an integrated framework in which these internal models interact with endocrine systems to regulate mating behavior and mother-infant bonding. External sensory cues and internal bodily states are combined in the central nervous system to generate predictions about a partner's actions and to adjust one's own behavior accordingly. Sex hormones organize and activate sex-specific neural circuits that stabilize male- and female-type behavi

Brain bases of real-time social interaction: A meta-analytic investigation of human neuroimaging studies.

INTRODUCTION: Social interactions play a central role in shaping brain function, but neuroscientific research on interactive social behavior has been limited by the restrictions of brain imaging environments. Although a growing body of neuroimaging research situates participants in real-time social interactive contexts, questions remain about the brain systems critical for understanding social interaction. This study addresses three primary questions: 1) Is there a common network of brain regions that underlies diverse forms of social interaction? 2) Are there dissociable brain systems that co

Effect of morphine dependence and withdrawal on operant social interaction in male and female rats.

Opioid addiction is linked to decreased social connections. In preclinical models, non-contingent experimenter-administered morphine decreases unconditioned social interaction and place preference for social reward. We tested if these effects generalize to an operant rat model of social self-administration in which rats work volitionally for access to a peer. Based on the literature, we also tested if a kappa opioid receptor (KOR) antagonist (LY2456302) and serotonin and dopamine reuptake inhibitors (fluoxetine and GBR12909), would independently reverse the effect of morphine exposure on socia

Using Immersive Virtual Reality to Enhance Social Interaction Among Older Adults: A Cross-Site Investigation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Virtual reality (VR) applications are increasingly being targeted toward older adults as a means to maintain physical and cognitive skills and to connect with others, especially during the coronavirus disease 2019 era. Our knowledge about how older adults interact with VR is limited, however, since this is an emerging area and the related research literature is still rather slim. The current study focused specifically on older adults' reactions to a social-VR environment, examining participant's views about the possibility of meaningful interactions in this format, t

Sexually Dimorphic Effects of Neuromodulatory Drugs on Normal and Stress-Induced Social Interaction in Rats.

Social behavior is a complex term which involves different interactions between various individuals of a community. It is controlled by different neurotransmitter systems in a sexually dimorphic way. Certain environmental factors, like stress, cause various neurological disorders with associated social abnormalities in a sexually dimorphic way. Multiple drugs are used in clinical settings to treat behavioral disorders. However, the sexually dimorphic effects of these drugs, particularly on social behavior, still need to be studied. The present study was designed to investigate the sex-dependen

Abnormal brain development of monoamine oxidase mutant zebrafish and impaired social interaction of heterozygous fish.

Monoamine oxidase (MAO) deficiency and imbalanced levels of brain monoamines have been associated with developmental delay, neuropsychiatric disorders and aggressive behavior. Animal models are valuable tools to gain mechanistic insight into outcomes associated with MAO deficiency. Here, we report a novel genetic model to study the effects of mao loss of function in zebrafish. Quantitative PCR, in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry were used to study neurotransmitter systems and expression of relevant genes for brain development in zebrafish mao mutants. Larval and adult fish behavior

Functional selectivity for social interaction perception in the human superior temporal sulcus during natural viewing.

Recognizing others' social interactions is a crucial human ability. Using simple stimuli, previous studies have shown that social interactions are selectively processed in the superior temporal sulcus (STS), but prior work with movies has suggested that social interactions are processed in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), part of the theory of mind network. It remains unknown to what extent social interaction selectivity is observed in real world stimuli when controlling for other covarying perceptual and social information, such as faces, voices, and theory of mind. The current study util

Clarifying the Relation between Social Interaction Anxiety and Cannabis Use: Personality as a Distinguishing Factor.

Background: Individuals with social interaction anxiety, a facet of social anxiety disorder, are heterogeneous with respect to approaching or avoiding risky behaviors, including substance use. Additionally, the relation between social anxiety and cannabis use frequency has been inconsistent in the literature. Objective: The present study aimed to clarify the relation between social interaction anxiety and cannabis use by examining the effects of personality traits known to differentially predict substance use, including sensation seeking, emotion dysregulation, urgency, behavioral approach, an

Adolescent intermittent ethanol exposure: Effects on pubertal development, novelty seeking, and social interaction in adulthood.

Alcohol use initiated early in adolescence is a major predictor for the development of alcohol use disorders. This risk may be increased when drinking is initiated around the time of puberty, given evidence of bidirectional relationships between alcohol and gonadal hormones. The current study examined the effects of adolescent intermittent ethanol exposure (AIE) on pubertal timing and expression of novelty-seeking and peer-directed behaviors as well as neural correlates of these behaviors. AIE did not affect pubertal timing or the later expression of novelty-seeking and peer-directed behaviors

Deletion of TLR-4 attenuates fetal alcohol exposure-induced gene expression and social interaction deficits.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are associated with social interaction behavior and gastrointestinal (GI) abnormalities. These abnormal behaviors and GI abnormalities overlap with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We investigated the effect of fetal alcohol exposure (FAE) on social interaction deficits (hallmark of autism) in mice. Evidence indicates that exogenous lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration during gestation induces autism-like behavior in the offspring. LPS regulates the expression of genes underlying differentiation, immune function, myelination, and synaptogenesis in feta

Assessment of social interaction and anxiety-like behavior in senescence-accelerated-prone and -resistant mice.

Two members of the senescence-accelerated mouse group, SAMP8 and SAMP10, are characterized by learning and memory deficits, while the SAMR1 strain is not. In this study, we used two behavioral tests, social approach and object recognition and compared the results observed for the SAMP strains with those seen in the control strain, SAMR1. In social approach experiments, the 2 SAMP strains showed decreased sociability compared to SAMR1 as shown by their reluctance to spend time near a stranger mouse and increased immobility. In object recognition experiments, SAMP strains spent more time in the
