OBJECTIVES: This paper explored (1) older adults' perceptions of age-friendly environments in China and (2) how participation in activities and services within these environments influenced their social relationships.
METHOD: Twenty-nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with Chinese residents aged 55 and older, who had no history of brain structural changes or severe mental health conditions, and resided in their current community for at least one year. Data were analyzed using applied thematic analysis.
RESULTS: Four themes were identified: (1) Age-friendly environments as supporti

Understandings of mobility and immobility shape research and responses to late life. Yet, the underlying assumptions about mobility often remain fixed on ideas of function and physical ability. The 'new mobilities' paradigm shifts this analysis by focusing on the importance and experience of mobility as a thing in itself rather than a means to an end, and to the complex enactments that operate across a range of relationships, settings, sites, and contexts. This paper provides insight from an embedded case study method comprised of fifteen exploratory interviews with older people at three socia

We aimed to evaluate the functional abilities of persons with Rett syndrome (RTT) in stages III and IV. The group consisted of 60 females who had been diagnosed with RTT: 38 in stage III, mean age (years) of 9.14, with a standard deviation of 5.84 (minimum 2.2/maximum 26.4); and 22 in stage IV, mean age of 12.45, with a standard deviation of 6.17 (minimum 5.3/maximum 26.9). The evaluation was made using the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory, which has 197 items in the areas of self-care, mobility, and social function. The results showed that in the area of self-care, stage III and s

BACKGROUND: Studies demonstrate associations between low social activity in older adults and cognitive decline. Little has been investigated regarding which factors are associated with low social activity in older adults at increased risk of dementia.
OBJECTIVE: We investigate which sociodemographic, psychological, health-related, and environmental factors are associated with low social activity in older adults at increased risk of dementia. Additionally, we describe the stages of health behavior change, the types of social activities, and the duration of the current level of social activity.

Aphasia impairs communication and is associated with reduced employment, limited social participation, and lower quality of life. However, the relationship between aphasia severity and these outcomes remains underexplored, especially regarding employment. This cross-sectional study examined employment status, social participation, and quality of life in 136 individuals with chronic aphasia following cerebrovascular disease. Multiple logistic and linear regression models were used to evaluate the influence of aphasia severity, non-linguistic cognitive function, apathy, mobility, and social envi

BACKGROUND: One-fifth of all disabled children have mobility limitations. Early provision of powered mobility for very young children (aged < 5 years) is hypothesised to trigger positive developmental changes. However, the optimum age at which to introduce powered mobility is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this project was to synthesise existing evidence regarding the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of powered mobility for very young children, compared with the more common practice of powered mobility provision from the age of 5 years.
REVIEW METHODS: The study was planned as a mixed-me

OBJECTIVES: Companions (i.e., friends who spend time together) are important for the well-being of older adults. Senior centers in the United States are places for older adults to participate in group activities and form and maintain companionships. However, differences in mobility and transportation may affect the ability of older adults to leverage senior center activities into actual companionships.
METHODS: This social network analysis was conducted to characterize the companionship network among members of a senior center in relation to their life-space mobility and transportation resour

Thirty-two young adults with spina bifida completed a questionnaire (Family Environment Scale) assessing their perceptions of family social environment while growing up. Additionally, subjects responded to a structured interview addressing their current employment status, residential situation, level of community mobility, and extent of social activity. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to assess the relation between family environment and adjustment as a young adult. With this limited sample, results indicated that perceived family environment explained variance in employment, c

BACKGROUND: Independent mobility in early life catalyzes development across motor, perceptual, cognitive, social, and linguistic domains. For young children with motor disabilities, however, opportunities to explore, interact, and learn from their surroundings are commonly restricted, which may limit developmental progress.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of a play-based powered mobility intervention, using the Permobil Explorer Mini, on developmental and communicative outcomes in toddlers with motor disabilities, using a single-group, repeated measures design.
METHODS: Ten children with m

Objective: To explore the effects of social isolation and vulnerability on loneliness among rural residents of Japan by testing the hypothesis that social support can alleviate loneliness. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey was conducted using the University of California, Los Angeles Loneliness Scale score as the outcome to analyze the correlation between loneliness and social support. Results: Among the 975 respondents, 46.7% were men, the mean age was 63.9 years, and 58.1% were aged ≥65 years. The three most common risk factors for loneliness and social vuln

Background Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is primarily characterized by deficits in social communication and restricted behaviors, but motor impairments are also highly prevalent and debilitating. Children with ASD often experience challenges in fundamental motor skills (FMS), particularly in coordination, postural control, and locomotor abilities. These impairments not only limit physical activity but also restrict social interaction, play, and communication, thereby compounding developmental challenges. Although sensory integration and FMS-based interventions have each shown positive outcome

INTRODUCTION: In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), loneliness and social isolation are associated with increased morbidity and decreased mobility, self-reliance, and health-related quality of life. Social support has been shown to improve these outcomes.
AIMS: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the level of experienced social support and the clinical outcomes associated with inadequate social support among patients with COPD with a resident loved one.
METHODS: Level of social support was assessed with the Medical Outcomes Study - Social Support Survey (

IMPORTANCE: Mobility, defined as the ability to move freely, decreases with increasing age. The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather and climate events (EWCEs), such as hurricanes, pose a considerable risk for older adults (aged ≥65 years) to maintain their mobility (ie, mobility resilience).
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether an association exists between older-aged neighborhoods and mobility resilience following an EWCE.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case series study used 2022 demographics with prospectively observed social infrastructure point-of-interest visitation

Clozapine is recognized as the gold standard for treating treatment-resistant schizophrenia but carries a notable risk of severe adverse effects. This case report presents a 61-year-old Welsh woman with paranoid schizophrenia and epilepsy who, while on long-term clozapine and valproic acid therapy, developed a progressive decline in mobility, cognition, and social engagement, punctuated by recurrent falls. Despite numerous hospital visits and extensive investigations, the underlying cause of her symptoms remained elusive until serum clozapine level testing revealed toxicity, with levels signif

BACKGROUND: Residential mobility can introduce exposure misclassification in pediatric epidemiology studies using birth address only.
OBJECTIVE: We examined whether residential mobility varies by sociodemographic factors and urbanicity/rurality among children with cancer.
METHODS: Our study included 400 children born in Pennsylvania during 2002-2015 and diagnosed with leukemia at ages 2-7 years. Addresses were obtained from state registries at birth and diagnosis. We considered three aspects of mobility between birth and diagnosis: whether a child moved, whether a mover changed census tract,

BACKGROUND: The mobility of older individuals has often been only partially assessed, without considering all important aspects such as potential (available) versus effective (used) mobilities and the physical and psychosocial factors that modulate them. This study proposes a new model for evaluating mobility that considers all important aspects, applied here to lower-limb amputees with vascular origin. This model integrates the concepts of potential mobility (e.g. balance, speed of movement), effective mobility (e.g. life habits, movements in living areas) and factors that modulate these two
